Abstract

Some birds can migrate over great distances with remarkable accuracy. To explain this ability, we must find the right sort of connection between some structured feature of the environment and some feature of the birds’ cognitive economy. For example, it has been suggested that some birds have organs sensitive to the orientation of the earth’s magnetic field. It may thus be possible to explain avian navigation in terms of the relation between the magnetic field of the earth and the compasses in the birds.
