Abstract

Philosophy: The Quest for Truth is an anthology of classical and contemporary readings on nineteen philosophical problems or questions. Meant to help students make sense of the various arguments to be found within the major areas of philosophy, its eighty-four selections are organized topically and in a pro/con format. Topics include the nature of philosophy and the existence of God, what we know and who we are, how we should live and if we should act, political philosophy, and the meaning of life. Alongside works from Plato, Albert Camus, Rene Descartes, Paul Edwards, John Hick, William James, John Locke, J. P. Moreland, Richard Rorty, Jean-Paul Sartre, and many others, eleven new selections have been added to this edition - from David Chalmers, Roderick M. Chisholm, Jerry A. Fodor, David Hume, Soren Kierkegaard, Don Marquis, Michael Martin, James Rachels, Bertrand Russell, Harvey Siegel, and Judith Jarvis Thomson. To assist students on their journey of philosophical discovery, Louis P. Pojman and new coeditor Lewis Vaughn, offer numerous pedagogical features. They introduce each philosophical problem and every reading, offering biographical sketches and bibliographies. Study Questions precede every reading, highlighting important concepts to come, while "For Further Reflection" questions follow, encouraging discussion, critical thinking, and development of personal views. There is also a detailed glossary and an appendix on how to read and write a philosophy paper.
