|Abstract||Even if the "ill−defined 'animal spirits'" (Porter 1987:177) were too charged with imaginary values to achieve "the specificity of a true scientific concept" (Starobinski 1966:179), their usage has its patterns and constraints. "These quick and nimble spirits", as the Cambridge Platonist John Smith called them (1660/1979:116), were meshed in a "lush jungle of metaphor" (Rousseau 1989:41). They failed "to satisfy the spirit [l'esprit]" of one of their historians, Dr Maurice Mignon (1934:12): but, as their study proves, there is more than one style of spirit.|
