Abstract

The small field station of the Berlin Aquarium 'Unter den Linden' was founded in Rovinj in 1891. Its main task was to supply seawater, live organisms and preserved specimens to the Berlin establishment and other aquaria and universities throughout Europe. The public aquarium and botanical garden were also well developed. However, scientific research soon became the preeminent activity and tasks related to the aquarium took second place. Nevertheless, the aquarium space and installations have been reconstructed and enlarged several times. At present the Rovinj public aquarium is run as a self-supporting department of the Centre for Marine Research of the 'Ruđer Bošković' Institute.
