It is common for organizational theorists as well as business practitioners to speak of an organization''s visions, strategies, goals and responsibilities. This implies that collectivities have competencies normally attributed to individuals, i.e. to reflect, evaluate, learn and make considered choices. The article provides a series of reflections on the concept of consciousness in an organizational context. It is argued that, under certain conditions, it is both meaningful and efficacious to ascribe the competency for conscious and intentional behavior to organizations. Present-day economic thinking assumes that individuals always pursue their narrow self-interest or private economic incentives, and hence ignores the influence of ethical motives, such as sympathy and public interest, on human action. This paper focuses on the divergence between economic incentives and ethical motives for action in contemporary life and business. The paper underscores the nature of interrelationships among economics, ethics and business ethics, and highlights the relevance of ancient ethical principles, such as ethics of interdependence and ethics of prudence (...) or self-development, to the development of present-day business ethics. The paper also emphasises the importance of the convergence between economic incentives and ethical motives for action, while stressing the need for a deeper appreciation of business ethics in today's rapidly globalising world. Secularization of life in general is widely seen as a direct consequence of European enlightenment and the process of modernization. The paper contests this thesis of societal secularization through a historical analysis of ideas in the Anglo-Saxon Christian parts of Europe and North America. It contends that the sense of the sacred has either been pushed to the private lives of individuals or marginalized into myriad forms of counter-movements. This paper then contests secularization of organizations and sees it as a (...) thin veil of misperception. Success of Japanese organizations and studies thereof, have brought back the inevitable relevance of societal cultures for organizational management. A sense of the sacred is an essential aspect of culture—societal or organizational—which must be taken into account to build truly humane and optimally effective organizations. In this work I defend a theory called moderate materialism. Moderate materialism is an anti-reductionistic theory of mind that understands consciousness to be an emergent, but not a separable, feature of complex neurobiological systems. My thesis is that, consciousness necessarily depends upon neurobiological states; but consciousness is not reducible to neurobiological states, since research into neural plasticity provides evidence that conscious experiences, such as learning, facilitate neurobiological changes in organisms. A sound theory of consciousness should therefore provide an explanation of (...) those neurobiological items that underlie conscious activities, in conjunction with an explanation of higher-level mental activities, such as intentions, that influence a number of neurobiological processes. I argue that a mereotopological theory of part-whole relations can be used to describe human beings as integral wholes, whose conscious and non-conscious parts hang together as ontologically dependent items. A theory of ontological dependence relations, specifically weak rigid dependence, provides a way to formalize how conscious states can emerge from and supervene upon neurobiological states. (shrink)
