En 1971, Anis Kidwai, jeune veuve de la bourgeoisie intellectuelle musulmane d’Inde du Nord devenue travailleuse sociale, publiait Azadi ki chaon me (Dans l’ombre de la liberté), autobiographie bouleversante rédigée plus de vingt ans plus tôt, dans le bruit et la fureur qui accompagnèrent en 1947 la Partition de l’Inde au moment de la décolonisation. Elle met en évidence l’ampleur des violences genrées pendant la Partition, violences largement bannies des histoires nationales jusqu’aux années 1990-2000 où elles furent réexaminées par les (...) historien.nes des Subaltern Studies. Cette autobiographie constitua à cet égard une source amplement mobilisée par des historien.nes soucieux d’explorer les « consciences subalternes », dont le récit de vie fut un véhicule privilégié. À cet égard, bien que très documentée, l’autobiographie de Kidwai constitue un choix peu anodin puisqu’il conjugue le témoignage et le « littéraire », mobilise tout autant le mode du récit référentiel que celui de l’expérience historique et le registre de l’émotion. Cet article s’intéresse à cette autobiographie, sa redécouverte puis sa traduction dans les années 2000, comme témoin du changement radical de paradigme entrepris par les Subaltern Studies dans leur approche de l’histoire, et plus particulièrement de l’histoire des violences de masse. H´ector-Neri Casta˜neda-Calder´on (December 13, 1924–September 7, 1991) was born in San Vicente Zacapa, Guatemala. He attended the Normal School for Boys in Guatemala City, later called the Military Normal School for Boys, from which he was expelled for refusing to fight a bully; the dramatic story, worthy of being filmed, is told in the “De Re” section of his autobiography, “Self-Profile” (1986). He then attended a normal school in Costa Rica, followed by studies in philosophy at the University of (...) San Carlos, Guatemala. He won a scholarship to the University of Minnesota, where he received his B.A. (1950), M.A. (1952), and Ph.D. (1954), all in philosophy. His dissertation, “The Logical Structure of Moral Reasoning”, was written under the direction of Wilfrid Sellars. He returned to teach in Guatemala, and then received a scholarship to study at Oxford University (1955–1956), after which he took a sabbatical-replacement position in philosophy at Duke University (1956). His first full-time academic appointment was at Wayne State University (1957– 1969), where he founded the philosophy journal Noˆus (1967, a counter-offer made to him by Wayne State to encourage him to stay there rather than to take the chairmanship of philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania). In 1969, he moved (along with several of his Wayne colleagues) to Indiana University, where he eventually became the Mahlon Powell Professor of Philosophy and, later, its first Dean of Latino Affairs (1978–1981). He remained at Indiana until his death. He was also a visiting professor of philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin (1962–1963) and a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (1981–1982). He received grants and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation (1967–1968), the T. Andrew Mellon Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the National Science Foundation. He was elected President of the American Philosophical Association Central Division (1979– 1980), named to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1990), and received the Presidential Medal of Honor from the Government of Guatemala (1991). ”Self-beliefs” are beliefs of the sort one ordinarily has about oneself, and expresses with the first person. These contrast with the beliefs one has in ”Casta˜neda cases,” in which one has a belief about oneself without knowing it. This paper advances an account of the nature of self-belief. According to this account, self-belief is a special case of interacting with things via notions that serve as repositories for information about objects with certain important relations to the knower, and as (...) motivators for actions the success of which is dependent on the object in that relation to the agent. Identity is such a relation, and ”self-notions” play this special role: they are the repositories for information gained in normally self-informative ways, and the motivators of types of action whose success normally depends on facts about the agent. Self-beliefs involve such self-notions, while the beliefs that one has about oneself in Casta˜neda cases do not. (shrink)

Animals populate our artistic and philosophical discourses in critical ways. From Jacques Derrida's or Karen Barad's cat, to Donna Haraway's dog, to the fish in Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Véréna Paravel's Leviathan, these animals feature heavily in discussions regarding limits – the limits of the human and thus its relation with non-humans, but also the limits of knowledge itself. Cute or dangerous, real or fantasised, dead or alive: in this article, I juxtapose the various ways that such animals confront us with (...) what Jacques Derrida describes as “the point of view of the absolute other”. Similarly, recent texts stage encounters with animals – thus distributing agency towards a larger variety of beings, carving out space for a previously excluded non-human other. Yet these encounters are mediated in profoundly different ways. In researching how encounters with the animal are differentially inflected and “defracted” respective to the medium in which they are staged, this article invokes questions of form and style within the critical dialogue that attempts to centre non-human animals. Highlighting how formal decisions are not accidental, but rather integral, to the praxis of the philosophy of animality, this article aims to draw attention to how specific forms and styles allow for a moment of contact with a non-human other. To this end, this article examines three oft-cited encounters: Derrida's encounter with his cat, an intense stare with a fish in Leviathan, and Barad's inflection of Schrödinger's cat. This juxtaposition gives insight into the limits of certain styles of producing thought and critically reflects on these works in their discussion of non-human life and agency. (shrink)

Emphasis is placed on the tripod emblematic of this sacred office which is here intimately associated with expertise in the oracular communications of the Cumaean Sibyl. The libri Sibyllini, the supervision and interpretation (...) of which were amongst the earliest and most conspicuous of the XVuiri's responsibilities, could be traced to the Sibyl at Cumae. Wreathes, too, formed part of the XVuir's equipment, and of course during the Imperial period the Sibylline books were deposited in the Temple of Apollo on the Palatine. In little more than two lines, then, one finds an abundance of references that cannot fail to fashion this addressee of Apollo as a quindecimvir. (shrink)

Come mostra questo libro, la linearità apparente di questa traiettoria è tuttavia contestata dal contrappunto di una serie di sentieri (...) interrotti, da una temporalità plurale nella quale i tempi si accavallano, si intrecciano, collidono. È la storia dell’affetto e della libertà che cementano la famiglia; la storia del desiderio di stima e rispetto che fissa i primi doveri della civiltà; la storia dell’eroe che in nome della comunione delle terre contrasta la loro recinzione o del brigante che si sottrae alla servitù del lavoro salariato. Sport is predicated on the idea of victors emerging from a level playing field. All ethically informed evaluate practices are like this; they require an equality of respect, consideration, and opportunity, while trying to achieve substantively unequal outcomes. For instance: limited resources mean that physicians must treat some patients and not others, while still treating them with equal respect; examiners must pass some students and not others, while still giving their work equal consideration; employers may only be able to hire (...) one applicant, while still being required to treat all applicants fairly, and so on. The 800 m is meant to be one of these practices: a level and equidistance running track from which one victor is intended to emerge. The case of Caster Semenya raises challenging questions about what makes level-playing-fields level, questions that extend beyond any given playing field. In the Feature Article for this issue Loland provides us with new and engaging reasons to support of the Court of Arbitration for Sport decision in the Casta Semenya case. The impact of the CAS decision requires Casta Semenya to supress her naturally occurring testosterone if she is to compete in an international athletics events. The Semenya case is described by Loland as creating a ‘dilemma of rights’.i The dilemma lies in the choice between ‘the right of Semenya to compete in sport according to her legal sex and gender identity’ and ‘the right of other athletes within the average female testosterone range to compete under fair conditions’ (see …. The recent ‘nonhuman turn’ in the theoretical humanities and social sciences has highlighted the need to develop more ontological modes of theorising the ethical ‘responsibility’ of the human in its relational encounters with nonhuman bodies and materialities. However, there is a lingering sense in this literature that such an ethics remains centred on a transcendent subject that would pre-exist the encounters on which it is called to respond. In this essay, I explore how Gilles Deleuze's philosophy offers potential opening for (...) a more ontogenetic thinking of a ‘nonhuman ethics’. Specifically, I focus on how his theory of ‘individuation’ – conceived as a creative event of emergence in response to immanent ontological problems – informs his rethinking of ethics beyond the subject, opening thought to nonhuman forces and relations. I argue that if cinema becomes a focus of Deleuze's ethical discussions in his later work it is because the images and signs it produces are expressive of these nonhuman forces and processes of individuation, generating modes of perception and duration without ontological mooring in the human subject. Through a discussion of Verena Paravel and Lucien Castaing-Taylor's experimental film – Leviathan – I explore how the cinematic encounter dramatises different ethical worlds in which a multiplicity of nonhuman ‘points of view’ coexist without being reduced to a hierarchical or orienting centre that would unify and identify them. To conclude, I suggest that it is through the lens of an ethics of individuation that we can grasp the different sense of ‘responsibility’ alive in Deleuze's philosophy, one oriented not to the terms of the already-existing but rather to the nonhuman potential of what might yet come into being. Este trabajo aborda el pacto librepensador suscri­to por las autoras Rosario de Acuña y Ángeles López de Ayala. Se examinan sus contribuciones en la prensa librepensadora y su activismo feminista a través de un análisis de sus colabora­ciones en Las dominicales del librepensamiento, El gladiador: órgano de la “Sociedad progresiva femenina” y El gladiador del librepensamiento. La ideología de estas publicaciones les permitió vincular la lucha feminista con la agenda política de ideología progresista. Se parte de dos ejes complementarios cuya (...) intersección permite abordar su pacto de compromiso y transgresión: la lucha por la igualdad social y por la igualdad de género. Se estudian sus reflexiones sobre la explotación del pueblo por las castas, el empoderamiento de la mujer como agente constructor del progreso y la denuncia vehemente de su sometimiento. Se concluye que los escritos de Acuña y Ayala evidencian con el paso de los años una radicalización que pro­picia una postura cada vez más trasgresora y un feminismo más combativo, reflejando así su descontento con la actitud pater­nalista u hostil del librepensamiento y el republicanismo mas­culino en lo que respecta a los derechos de la mujer. En el presente trabajo analizamos la formación de la mujer musulmana en las revistas digitales oficiales del grupo Daesh: Dabiq y Rumiyah. Llevamos a cabo un análisis de contenido cualitativo de los artículos destinados a la mujer musulmana y aquellos en los que se habla específicamente de ellas. Para el análisis de los datos utilizamos el software Atlas.ti. Daesh promueve una clara desigualdad de género, considerando que la mujer musulmana debe ser casta, modesta, obediente, fiel y sumisa. Le otorgan (...) roles tradicionales como madre y esposa. Resulta imperante diseñar medidas educativas preventivas que incluyan la perspectiva del feminismo islámico. (shrink)

La cristología de la carta a los Hebreos está determinada por el sacerdocio de Cristo. Esa presentación magistral viene precedida por el principio de “Cristo como kerygma del Padre” (cc. 1-2), en que se pone de manifiesto el papel profético de Jesús, lo que debe ser valorado en su justa medida. Aunque es verdad que el sacerdocio de Cristo, lo más exclusivo de todo el NT, pone de manifiesto una visión particular y original de lo que se quiere afirmar. Es (...) un sacerdocio de solidaridad con sus hermanos; se trata de un sacerdocio misericordioso y, por ello, no estamos simplemente ante un título exótico que el autor rescata exegéticamente de Gn 14; la cristología del sacerdocio de Cristo nos hace asomarnos al papel kenótico de su sacerdocio: compasivo y semejante a sus hermanos. No es un sacerdocio de casta, sino de solidaridad fraternal para acercarnos al misterio de Dios. Se debe entender que estamos ante un sacerdocio compasivo, humano, que es lo que llevará a la exaltación de ese sacerdocio,. La comparación con el himno de Filipenses (Flp 2,5-11) es muy sugerente. Y no menos decisivo es que ese sacerdocio trae para la humanidad un “alianza nueva” que implica para los cristianos una conciencia de salvación y liberación; una nueva concepción de la santidad de Dios y de lo divino; y, en definitiva, se quiere mostrar una religión de absoluta confianza en Dios y en la obra salvífica de Cristo. Hesiod refers to it in the Catalogue of Women, where he calls the daughter Iphimede. From the fifth century b.c.e., the extant sources, beginning with Pindar and Aeschylus, call her Iphigenia. This article seeks to entangle two current philosophic praxes: New Materialism, and Sensory Ethnography. Jane Bennett has become one of New Materialism's most prominent proponents since the release of her now-seminal text, Vibrant Matter in 2010. Due to the varied ground upon which New Materialism stands, Bennett's work will be looked at idiosyncratically, then pushed into the realm of the cinematic via an analysis of the documentary, Leviathan. Directed by Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Véréna Paravel, this film was among the first (...) exemplary works to emerge from the Sensory Ethnography Lab, based at Harvard University. In striving for a revitalization of ethnographic film practices, the Lab aligns itself with similarly non-anthropocentric, and non-discursive, aspects of experience to the New Materialism of Jane Bennett. La presente ponencia se origina a partir de la siguiente pregunta: ¿«raza» (Rasse) y «sexo» (Geschlecht) son conceptos bajo los cuales es posible hallar una filosofía latente del cuerpo en Heidegger? En cuanto concierne al concepto de «raza», es patente el carácter ambiguo de dicha pregunta, si se toma en consideración la recepción que han tenido los Cuadernos negros, a saber, como el material a partir del cual cabría determinar hasta qué punto el antisemitismo «contaminaría» la filosofía de Heidegger. Y (...) ello porque la aproximación heideggeriana al concepto de lo «racial» (rassisch) consistirá precisamente en rechazar toda comprensión naturalista o biológica para transponerla de manera digamos «ontológica» en el concepto de lo «de buena casta» (rassig), el cual está fundamentado en el «ser-arrojado» (Geworfenheit) como constituyente del «pueblo» (Volk) en su carácter historial. Por otro lado, es de común acuerdo el carácter problemático tanto de la corporalidad como de la espacialidad en la ontología heideggeriana, en tanto parece otorgárseles un lugar meramente «óntico» que debe ser reconducido asimismo de manera ontológica al «corporar» (leiben) codeterminante del «ser-en-el-mundo». Dicha aproximación a la corporalidad, por ejemplo, en los Seminarios de Zollikon, que consiste en calificarla de «condición necesaria pero no suficiente», es la misma que caracteriza su posición crítica con respecto a la «raza», la cual consistiría en el gesto impropio de elevar «una condición al estatuto de lo incondicionado». Dicho gesto mostrará su aporía en tanto debe al mismo tiempo expulsar fuera de sí un «resto»: en el caso de la raza, un pueblo que rehúsa su carácter de «pueblo». Finalmente, se abordará un intento de pensar la «raza» en su materialidad a través del concepto de «mestizaje». (shrink)

A partir de los conceptos de carácter, virtud y amistad propuestos por la ética de la ficción de Wayne Booth, realizamos un análisis comparativo entre los efectos éticos provocados por el territorio y la música en las novelas Península, Península de Hernán Lara Zavala y en El llamado de los tunk’ules de Marisol Ceh Moo. Sugerimos que, a pesar de estar ante dos novelas que comparten el mismo contexto geo-histórico, los efectos éticos causados por el territorio y la música, bajo (...) la idea de Yucatán, guardan diferencias que ameritan llevar a cabo una co- ducción para dilucidar el tipo de compañía literaria que nos ofrecen.
