Luigi Sacco (1769–1863) was the main protagonist of early vaccination campaign in Italy. He found a native source of vaccine lymph: with that, he personally vaccinated more than 500,000 people and furnished all Italy and some Middle East countries too. Starting from the pictures of his books, Sacco proposed to create wax models of real and spurious smallpox pustules in human, cow, sheep and horse; just to permit, not only to doctors, but also to all other health operators, the identification (...) of the right pustules from where to extract active lymph for vaccination. In the Museum of Pathological Anatomy of the Padua University Medical School, we have four anatomical waxes which corresponded exactly to the explicative pictures in 1809 Sacco’s treatise on Vaccine. We have found the same models also at the University of Milan, Pavia and Bologna—the main cities of Cisalpine Republic , the state of North Italy formed at the epoch of Sacco following the Napoleon conquest. The history of the diffusion of these models presented in this text will be a starting point to develop wider questions. In particular, this history could be useful to improve our understanding of the birth of scientific and experimental medicine through XIX and XX Century. (shrink)
New temperature-dependent Brillouin and Raman scattering experiments were performed on vitreous GeO2 in the 10?1200?K temperature range. We found that, while the sound velocity above room temperature slightly increases (2?3%), the frequency of the Boson peak maximum shows unexpected behavior, decreasing by more than 15% when the temperature is increased. The results are interpreted in the framework of a phenomenological model.
The dialectical method of reasoning, constituted by opposed opinions, ís the procedure of knowledge acquisition and of foundation of principies for practical and theoretical scíences. The demonstration from the principies of science, which classically is considered the proper procedure of science, does not have more committing than to systematize pedagogically what previously has been obtained by the dialectic method.
We present a Raman scattering study of B2O3 as a function of temperature. Measurements have been done from liquid helium temperature up to the supercooled liquid state. We found that the shift in the boson peak could be completely ascribed to the temperature induced elastic medium transformation and we do not need the introduction of other mechanisms. Furthermore we show also in this system that the boson peak spectral shape is invariant.
In order to present the philosopher Alberto Wagner de Reyna, we must first understand his life, then his work, and finally the force of his ideas; especially those which establish him within the history of philosophical ideas. This paper presents a synthesis of the conversation that the author..
Pe.
In this paper the scientific trajectory of Spanish influential biochemist Alberto Sols (1917-1989) is presented in comparative perspective. His social and academic environment, his research training under the Cori's in the US in the early 1950s and his works when coming back to Spain to develop his own scientific career are described in order to present the central argument of this paper on his path from physiological research to research on enzymatic regulation. Sols' main contributions were both scientific and (...) academic. He and his collaborators not only contributed to biological knowledge on the biochemistry of metabolic regulation but to the active reception of biochemistry in the Spanish academia and to update of Spanish medical education. ABSTRACT This article analyses Alberto Antoniazzi work in the Church of Brazil. It outlines his thought and his contribution in many fields of knowledge, identifying the challenges he faced within the context of contemporary culture. It demonstrates that current changes in religious thought do not result merely from its inner movement, but from history itself. With beasis on a multidisciplinary foundation, that scholar’s analyses, research and projects have disclosed new horizons for the religious experience. Using Coffa's paper as a point of departure, this brief note is designed to show that Hempel's inductive-statistical model of explanation implicitly construes explanations of that type as defective deductive-nomological explanations, with the consequence that there is no such thing as genuine inductive-statistical explanation according to Hempel's account. This result suggests a possible implicit commitment to determinism behind Hempel's theory of scientific explanation.
This review essay explores Alain Badiou’s paradoxical attempt to give a philosophical account of the 20th century (in his text The Century ) which is not understood along the lines of history. As an example of Badiou’s project of ‘subtractive formalization’, The Century amounts to an essentially ahistorical treatment of a historical period.
