We present some equivalent conditions for a quasivariety of structures to be generated by a single structure. The first such condition, called the embedding property was found by A.I. Mal′tsev in [6]. It says that if are nontrivial, then there exists such that A and B are embeddable into C . One of our equivalent conditions states that the set of quasi-identities valid in is closed under a certain Gentzen type rule which is due to J. Łoś and R. Suszko (...) [5]. (shrink)
In diesem Aufsatz wird versucht, eine axiomatische logische Rekonstruktion einiger der logischen Positionen der Vertreter der Idee der Quantifizierung der Prädikate im XIX. Jahrhundert (Bentham, Hamilton, De Morgan, Boole) zu geben. Es wird gezeigt, daß diese Systeme eine wichtige Rolle in der weiteren Entwicklung der Logik spielen. Neben der syntaktischen Seite dieser Theorien werden auch damit verbundene semantische Ideen diskutiert und es wird gezeigt, daß diese Systeme als Namenkalküle zwischen der Syllogistik und der Ontologie Lesniewskis liegend betrachtet werden können. Die (...) dabei involvierten logischen Zusammenhänge werden untersucht und zuletzt wird eine Interpretation des Systems Booles in den Systemen Lesniewskis vorgeschlagen. (shrink)
The paper presents an alternative substitutional semantics for first-order modal logic which, in contrast to traditional substitutional (or truth-value) semantics, allows for a fine-grained explanation of the semantical behavior of the terms from which atomic formulae are composed. In contrast to denotational semantics, which is inherently reference-guided, this semantics supports a non-referential conception of modal truth and does not give rise to the problems which pertain to the philosophical interpretation of objectual domains (concerning, e.g., possibilia or trans-world identity). Respondents in a southern state telephone survey agreed that media coverage of public leaders' private lives is an important news media responsibility, with agreement greater for legacy media than for online media, and differing depending on hypothetical scenario. The data also suggest increasing tolerance for such coverage and growing belief in responsibility of media to report on private indiscretions relative to previous studies.
The sixth volume of the series contains the first results of research done by three members of the team of researchers realizing the international project Theory of Imperatives and Its Applications, supported by the Foundation for Polish Science: Anna Brożek and Jacek Jadacki from Warsaw University, and Berislav Žarnić from Split University (Croatia). One of the texts – being a kind of the theoretical manifesto – was kindly commented by two scholars: Magdalena Danielewiczowa, a linguist from Warsaw University, and Ryszard (...) Kleszcz, a philosopher from Łódź University. The volume contains also a paper of Andrzej Bogusławski, an outstanding linguist from Warsaw University, and contributions by Bartosz Brożek from Jagiellonian University and Robert Trypuz from Catholic University of Lublin. Artykuł poświęcony jest analizie lingwistycznej Berkeleyowskiej doktryny egzystencjalnej, opartej na słynnej tezie esse idei = percipi. W toku szczegółowych dociekań wykazano konieczność wzbogacenia tradycyjnej, relacyjno-operacyjnej wykładni Berkeleyowskich tez egzystencjalnych o wymiar orzecznikowy, nakazujący interpretować je także jako kopule definicyjne. Stosowanie standardowej wykładni wypowiedzi Berkeleya wskazano jako jedną z głównych przyczyn dezinterpretacji jego metafizyki. W artykule opisano także nowe, filozoficznie intrygujące zastosowanie czasownika „być”, łączące w sobie cechy kopuli definicyjnej i czasownika pomocniczego strony biernej.
