  5. Lorraine Daston (2002). Biographies of Scientific Objects. History and Philosophy of the Life Sciences 23 (3/4):551-551.
Why does an object or phenomenon become the subject of scientific inquiry? Why do some of these objects remain provocative, while others fade from center stage? And why do objects sometimes return as the focus of research long after they were once abandoned? Addressing such questions, _Biographies of Scientific Objects_ is about how whole domains of phenomena—dreams, atoms, monsters, culture, society, mortality, centers of gravity, value, cytoplasmic particles, the self, tuberculosis—come into being and sometimes pass away as objects of scientific (...)

Sugiyama Shigeo (1999). Biographies of Scientists and Public Understanding of Science. AI and Society 13 (1-2):124-134.
In referring to biographies of Edison as examples, the following are shown: the image of a scientist or an engineer in biographies has dramatically changed over time; the images produced anew in each period fitted well to the social milieu of the day; biographies therefore acquired a large readership and contributed to informing to the public of the value of science and technology and the necessity of promoting them. It is also pointed out that a new image (...)

Hilary Kilpatrick (2004). Time and Death in Compiled Adab "Biographies". Al-Qantara: Revista de Estudios Árabes 25 (2):387-412.
In mediaeval Arabic belles-lettres (adab), accounts of lives are usually made up of quite short reports akhbár. These akbar are arranged in different ways, one of which is chronological order, but the compilers of such accounts apparently accord relative insignificance to chronological order. This paper examines some "biographies' compiled by al-Suli and Abú l-Faraj al-Isbaháni, showing that temporal progression can exist in a "biographical" presentation, either alone or more often combined with other ways of organising the material. It then (...)

Toni Brennan & Peter Hegarty (2009). Magnus Hirschfeld, His Biographies and the Possibilities and Boundaries of 'Biography' as 'Doing History'. History of the Human Sciences 22 (5):24-46.
This article considers the two major biographies of sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld, MD (1868—1935), an early campaigner for ‘gay rights’ avant la lettre. Like him, his first biographer Charlotte Wolff (1897—1986) was a Jewish doctor who lived and worked in Weimar Republic Berlin and fled Germany when the Nazi regime came to power. When researching Hirschfeld’s biography (published in English in 1986) Wolff met a librarian and gay activist, Manfred Herzer, who would eventually be a cofounder of the Gay Museum (...)

Abstract This article is based on a longitudinal study of relations between biographical conditions and the personality development of 21 young workers ranging from 23 to 30 years of age who had passed through an apprenticeship in large plants of the metal industry in West Berlin. The biographical analyses focused mainly on occupational conditions; the personality analyses, on such socio?cognitive variables as patterns of control awareness and structures of moral judgement. A review of the relevant literature led to the hypothesis (...)
