Coping with uncertainty: New forms of knowledge production. [REVIEW]G.Nter K.Ppers - 1999 - AI and Society 13 (1-2):52-62.
The paper introduces the concept, of self-organisation as a concept which explains in a general way the emergence of order. It shows how this concept can be used to describe social dynamics, i.e. the mutual construction of social institutions and the social processes which are regulated by these institutions. The driving force of this mutual construction is called ‘coping with uncertainty’. This concept is shown to be fruitful in the discussion of innovation networks, a new form of knowledge production.

It is proved that the relevance logic \ has no structurally complete consistent axiomatic extension, except for classical propositional logic. In fact, no other such extension is even passively structurally complete.

Ethics in the Family Firm: Cohesion through Reciprocity and Exchange.Rebecca G. Long & K. Michael Mathews - 2011 - Business Ethics Quarterly 21 (2):287-308.
ABSTRACT:The ubiquity of family dominated firms in economies worldwide suggests that inquiry into the nature of the ethical frames of these types of firms is increasingly important. In the context of a social exchange approach and the norm of reciprocity, this manuscript addresses social cohesion in a dominant family firm coalition. It is argued that the factors underlying this cohesion, direct versus indirect reciprocity, shape unique attributes of family firms such as intentions for transgenerational sustainability, the pursuit of non-economic goals, (...)

    Human dignity and human tissue: a meaningful ethical relationship?D. G. Kirchhoffer & K. Dierickx - 2011 - Journal of Medical Ethics 37 (9):552-556.
Human dignity has long been used as a foundational principle in policy documents and ethical guidelines intended to govern various forms of biomedical research. Despite the vast amount of literature concerning human dignity and embryonic tissues, the majority of biomedical research uses non-embryonic human tissue. Therefore, this contribution addresses a notable lacuna in the literature: the relationship, if any, between human dignity and human tissue. This paper first elaborates a multidimensional understanding of human dignity that overcomes many of the shortcomings (...)

    Child morbidity patterns in Ethiopia.A. G. Yohannes, K. Streatfield & L. Bost - 1992 - Journal of Biosocial Science 24 (2):143-155.
This study is based on the 1983 Rural Health Survey of Ethiopia. Patterns and levels of child morbidity by age, sex, geographic region, and sanitary facilities are examined. Morbidity levels peak in the second year of life. Diarrhoeal diseases are of major importance, especially among infants and toddlers. Parasitic diseases, and respiratory diseases other than pneumonia, become increasingly important with age. There are no significant sex differentials in morbidity except for higher rates of diarrhoeal diseases among female children. Geographic differentials are (...)

    Ascent to the Absolute, Metaphysical Papers and Lectures. [REVIEW]M. K. G. - 1971 - Review of Metaphysics 25 (1):124-124.
This is a collection of lectures and papers, written during the past ten years. They are all concerned with the logical properties of the Absolute and to this extent are a denial of the author's 1948 argument designed to disprove the existence of an Absolute Being. The first three lectures on Absolute-theory are a systematic account of the notion of a unique, necessary Existent and the repercussions such a notion has upon other philosophical problems such as space and time, substance (...)

In the case of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) imaging, image processing is crucial. In the medical industry, MRI images are commonly used to analyze and diagnose tumor growth in the body. A number of successful brain tumor identification and classification procedures have been developed by various experts. Existing approaches face a number of obstacles, including detection time, accuracy, and tumor size. Early detection of brain tumors improves options for treatment and patient survival rates. Manually segmenting brain tumors from a significant (...)

    Is Philosophy a 'Theory of Everything'?G. M. K. Hunt - 1992 - Royal Institute of Philosophy Supplement 33:219-231.
When Wittgenstein moved from Manchester to Cambridge he was following a path from the study of the natural sciences to the study of philosophy which was then not unusual, and has since become increasingly common. Russell had preceded him in that intellectual emigration and many more were to follow. Of the three philosophy departments I have been in, two were headed by natural scientists . Both my research supervisors in philosophy were natural scientists . Less surprising, but still significant, a (...)

    Laws: Projectability and uniformity.G. M. K. Hunt - 1990 - International Studies in the Philosophy of Science 4 (3):241 – 246.
Abstract It is argued that the problem of the necessity and projectability of laws may be solved by distinguishing between the fact of necessity and explanations of its nature. This reduces the problem of necessity to that of induction, which in consequences must be solved without reference to necessity using ?self?supporting? arguments. The consequences for the analysis of ?counterfactual conditionals and the problem of language dependence is discussed.

On 17-18 June of this year [1974] a discussion of the journal Voprosy filosofii in the past few years took place at the Academy of Social Sciences of the CPSU Central Committee at a session of the Special Scientific Council on Philosophical Sciences and readers of the journal. This event attracted considerable attention from philosophers working in the Academy of Social Sciences of the CPSU Central Committee as well as in other institutions, for example, the Higher Party School, the Institute (...)

Attention and Consciousness in the Processing of Novelty.G. Underwood, K. Paterson & P. Chapman - 1997 - Journal of Consciousness Studies 4 (4):339-344.
The essence of Baars’ paper is to propose nine functions for consciousness. By way of introducing these functions we are presented with a metaphor of a theatre, in which players act, operators set contexts behind the scenes, an unconscious audience provides specialised capabilities, and, of course, a bright spotlight of attention illuminates whatever is available to consciousness. The value of this metaphor is not entirely clear, with the separate ‘roles’ of the audience and of the operators behind the scenes being (...)
