  1. Heather Burnett (2014). A Delineation Solution to the Puzzles of Absolute Adjectives. Linguistics and Philosophy 37 (1):1-39.
The paper presents both new data and a new analysis of the semantic and pragmatic properties of the class of absolute scalar adjectives (ex. dry, wet, straight, bent, flat, empty, full…) within an extension of a well-known logical framework for the analysis of gradable predicates: the delineation semantics framework (DelS) (see Klein, Linguist Philos 4:1–45, 1980; van Benthem, Pac Philos Q 63:193–203, 1982; van Rooij, J Semant 28:335–358, 2011b, among many others). It has been long observed that the context-sensitivity, vagueness (...)

  2. Henry Burnett (2013). Nietzsche Em Bayreuth. Discurso 37:217-260.

  3. H. Burnett (2012). The Role of Microvariation in the Study of Semantic Universals: Adverbial Quantifiers in European and Quebec French. Journal of Semantics 29 (1):1-38.
This paper addresses the question of semantic universals with a particular focus on the limits of cross-linguistic variation in the semantics of lexical expressions. I argue that the variation observed in the semantics of adverbial quantifiers in the quantification at a distance (QAD) construction (e.g. J'ai beaucoup lu de livres) between Standard European French and Québec French constitutes an important argument for the existence of polyadicity as a lexical property in natural language. Specifically, I propose that QAD sentences in the (...)

  5. Henry Burnett (2011).

  8. H. Sterling Burnett (2009). Understanding the Precautionary Principle and its Threat to Human Welfare. Social Philosophy and Policy 26 (2):378-410.
Over the past three decades, the Precautionary Principle (PP) has become popular in discussions of public policy, especially in relation to health and environmental policy. Though there are a number of different versions of the principle, the genesis of the idea is that it is better to be safe than sorry. In terms of public policy, proponents of the PP argue that being safe means that, if there is a possibility of harm from a new activity or novel technology, even (...)
