This article sets out to undertake a thorough, point-by-point examination of the theory postulated by Campbell (2007), in which an attempt is made to specify the conditions under which corporations may or may not act in socially responsible ways. In order to ensure the overall reliability of our study, and to attempt to provide a new understanding of, and greater insights into, whether corporate social responsibility (CSR) is affected by financial and institutional variables, we empirically investigate a total of 520 (...)

To many, recent allegations of accounting fraud (or earnings management; EM) at Enron, coupled with similar ones at many other corporations, are a strong indication of a serious decay in business ethics. In academics, this raises the concern between EM and corporate social responsibility (CSR). Since it has neither been documented, nor globally tested whether CSR mitigates or increases the extent of EM, three kinds of EM are studied: earnings smoothing, earnings aggressiveness, and earnings losses and decreases avoidance. The extents (...)

    Charles Hampden-Turner & Ginger Chih (2010). Dilemmas of Diversity: A New Paradigm of Integrating Diversity. World Futures 66 (3 & 4):192 – 218.
This article frames diversity and recommends that it be reconciled with contrasting values. Diversity cannot stand by itself. At its most abstract level, diversity can be seen to be on a continuum with unity or with sameness and for diversity to become meaningful, these dilemmas must be reconciled, so that, for example, we are diverse in our expressions but the same in our rights to express that diversity.

The fluctuation-dissipation theorem is a central theorem in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics by which the evolution of velocity fluctuations of the Brownian particle under a fluctuating environment is intimately related to its dissipative behavior. This can be illuminated in particular by an example of Brownian motion in an ohmic environment where the dissipative effect can be accounted for by the first-order time derivative of the position. Here we explore the dynamics of the Brownian particle coupled to a supraohmic environment by considering (...)

Examples from Chinese, Thai, and Finnish illustrate why researchers cannot always be confident about the precise nature of the word unit. Understanding ambiguities regarding where a word begins and ends, and how to model word recognition when many derivations of a word are possible, is essential for universal theories of reading applied to both developing and expert readers.

The thirty-three sections of the Chuang Tzu annotated by Kuo Hsiang of the Chin dynasty were published during the period of the Northern Sung dynasty. Meanwhile, a preface allegedly by Kuo Hsiang was also printed in the book. The preface is as follows:Chuang Tzu was a man who had good knowledge of the origins of things in the universe and avoided no fantastic ideas. His remarks are hard to understand yet pertinent to phenomena. Any remark which is hard to understand (...)

Ample manpower and material were mobilized for research on Liuhsia Chih in 1974. A thorough investigation of the life of a very famous leader of the working people's uprising and a clarification of erroneous historical legends about him are important for studies of history. Undoubtedly, a correct understanding of this historical character's features and propaganda about his revolutionary deeds will be conducive to the cause of socialism in our country. It is regrettable that some widely publicized works in 1974 (...)
