  1. Bruce H. Weber & John N. Prebble (2006). An Issue of Originality and Priority: The Correspondence and Theories of Oxidative Phosphorylation of Peter Mitchell and Robert J.P. Williams, 1961-1980. [REVIEW] Journal of the History of Biology 39 (1):125 - 163.score: 144.0
In the same year, 1961, Peter D. Mitchell and Robert R.J.P. <span class='Hi'>Williamsspan> both put forward hypotheses for the mechanism of oxidative phosphorylation in (...) mitochondria and photophosphorylation in chloroplasts. Mitchell's proposal was ultimately adopted and became known as the chemiosmotic theory. Both hypotheses were based on protons and differed markedly from the then prevailing chemical theory originally proposed by E.C. (Bill) Slater in 1953, which by 1961 was failing to account for a number of experimental observations. Immediately following the publication of <span class='Hi'>Williamsspan>'s hypothesis and before his own was published, Mitchell initiated a correspondence. Examination of the letters shows the development of a dispute based on the validity of the proposals, who should have priority and particularly whether Mitchell had drawn on <span class='Hi'>Williamsspan>'s work without acknowledgement. We have concluded that Mitchell's proposals were original (a view still questioned by <span class='Hi'>Williamsspan>) although it is evident that prior to the correspondence <span class='Hi'>Williamsspan> had considered and rejected a proposition similar to Mitchell's theory. However, a major cause of the dispute was the difference in disciplinary backgrounds of Mitchell, a microbial biochemist and <span class='Hi'>Williamsspan>, a chemist. (shrink)

My critical comments on Part I of P. J. E. Kail's Projection and Realism in Hume's Philosophy are divided into two parts. First, I challenge the (...) exegetical details of Kail's take on Hume's important distinction between natural and philosophical relations. I show that Kail misreads Hume in a subtle fashion. If I am right, then much of the machinery that Kail puts into place for his main argument does different work in Hume than Kail thinks. Second, I offer a brief criticism of Kail's argument for reading Hume "as a realist about the external world" (Kail, 67). The two parts are (loosely) tied together because it turns out that Kail and I disagree about how Hume thinks of philosophers' activity generally. One caveat: .. (shrink)

This is a review of the bookMemory Evolutive Systems; Hierarchy, Emergence, Cognition’, by A. Ehresmann and J.P. Vanbremeersch. I welcome the use of category theory (...)and the notion of colimit as a way of describing how complex hierarchical systems can be organised, and the notion of categories varying with time to give a notion of an evolving system. In this review I also point out the relation of the notion of colimit to ideas of communication; the necessity of communications to be symbolic representations; and the use of an analogy with mathematics to spell out some of the necessities of such a mode of communication to be powerful, robust and efficient. In his two first-rate books, ’Consciousness and the Existence of God: A Theistic ArgumentandThe Recalcitrant Imago Dei: Human Persons and the Failure of Naturalism’, (...)J. P. Moreland argues that our existence as conscious beings presents insurmountable problems for naturalism and evidence for theism. In this review, I summarize Morelands treatment of three issues in scientific theory acceptance, which he claims are relevant to determining which worldview, theism or naturalism, is better able to explain the existence of conscious mental entities. I then raise some questions about their supposed relevance and conclude with some thoughts about the simplicity and immateriality of the soul. (shrink)

This critical study focusses on chapter eight ("Science and Strong Physicalism") and chapter nine ("AC, Dualism and the Fear of God") in J. P. MorelandsConsciousness (...)and the Existence of God: A Theistic Argument’ (Routledge, 2008), but also pays some attention to material in chapter two ("The Argument from Consciousness"). I argue against Morelandsautonomy thesis’ (roughly, the claim that, in principle, most philosophical questions can be answered without relying on science), and his contention that it is fear of God rather than intellectual considerations that explain current support for naturalism and physicalism.
