Pentti O. A. Haikonen (2007). Essential Issues of Conscious Machines. Journal of Consciousness Studies 14 (7):72-84.
The development of conscious machines faces a number of difficult issues such as the apparent immateriality of mind, qualia and self-awareness. Also consciousness-related cognitive processes such as perception, imagination, motivation and inner speech are a technical challenge. It is foreseen that the development of machine consciousness would call for a system approach; the developer of conscious machines should consider complete systems that integrate the cognitive processes seamlessly and process information in a transparent way with representational and non-representational information-processing modes. An (...)

Pentti Määttänen (2011). Dewey: A Beginner's Guide (Review). Transactions of the Charles S. Peirce Society 47 (1):109-110.
David Hildebrand has written an excellent introduction to John Dewey’s thought. It can be recommended not only for beginners but also for everyone whose conception of Dewey’s writings is based on secondary sources. Misinterpretations of Dewey’s pragmatism are far too common. Hildebrand’s clear and thorough exposition helps to avoid them, even though he does not take stands on debates concerning interpretations of Dewey’s work. Or perhaps his book succeeds in this just because Hildebrand is content to explain Dewey’s basic ideas (...)

Friedrich T. Sommer & Pentti Kanerva (2006). Can Neural Models of Cognition Benefit From the Advantages of Connectionism? Behavioral and Brain Sciences 29 (1):86-87.
Cognitive function certainly poses the biggest challenge for computational neuroscience. As we argue, past efforts to build neural models of cognition (the target article included) had too narrow a focus on implementing rule-based language processing. The problem with these models is that they sacrifice the advantages of connectionism rather than building on them. Recent and more promising approaches for modeling cognition build on the mathematical properties of distributed neural representations. These approaches truly exploit the key advantages of connectionism, that is, (...)

Pentti Hakkarainen (2004). Narrative Learning in the Fifth Dimension. Outlines. Critical Practice Studies 6 (1):5-20.
The article describes an extension of the original idea of the fifth dimension model to pre-school age. We found out that small schildren are not able to use in their activity the tasks formulated by the adults. Learning tasks inbedded in different narratives were used in 5D environments. Experimental research lead to a hypothesis on the status of narrative learning as ”transitory activity system” between play and school learning. The hypothesis is presented and a transitory model sketched. Examples on children’s (...)

Abstract Internalization of moral values on the basis of the values and principles stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was accepted as a starting point in the planning of moral education in the Finnish comprehensive school. The goals and content of moral education have not been clearly specified in the report of the Committee on Comprehensive School Curriculum, which in practice serves as a national curriculum. Moral tenets are mainly taught in religion and civics. The most common types (...)

    Pentti Määttänen, Mind in Action.
In colloquial language habit of action may refer to blind routine behaviour or bad bodily habits that one should get rid of. In pragmatism it is a central notion in challenging classical philosophy by explaining how habits function as beliefs and meanings, as vehicles of cognition.
