  13. Michael J. O'Neill (2006). A PeculiarFaith”: On R.G. Collingwood's Use of Saint Anselm's Argument. Saint Anselm Journal 3 (2):32-47.score: 522.0
In this paper, I discuss the role of Anselms ontological argument in the philosophy of R.G. Collingwood. Anselms argument appears prominently in Collingwoods Essay (...)on Philosophical Method (1933) and Essay on Metaphysics (1940), as well as in his early work Speculum Mentis (1924). In the proof, Collingwood finds the central expression of the priority offaithin the first principles of thought to reasons activities. For Collingwood, it is Anselms proof that clearly expresses this relationship between faith and reason. The two elements of this analysis that must be understood if one is to understand Collingwoods use of the proof are what he means bythe idea of an object that shall completely satisfy the demands of reasonand thespecial case of metaphysical thinking.” I analyze both of these elements and conclude by showing how Anselms proof is essential to Collingwoods historical science of mind. Aaron Ridley has concluded thatCollingwoods global Idealism is really only a distraction from the much more important and interesting ideas that constitute his aesthetics.” My (...)paper takes issue with this conclusion. Collingwoods idealism is an integral part of his aesthetics, and it simply cannot be shucked off, leaving his aesthetics untouched and intact. A careful reading of Collingwoods oeuvre in aesthetics reveals that it is his long-standing antipathy to realism that grounds both his critique of pseudo-art and his own theory of art, particularly his idealist theory of the imagination. If Collingwoods aesthetics are interesting and important, so is the idealism that grounds them. (shrink)
