  7. Leslie Stephen (1893). An Agnostic's Apology and Other Essays. Smith, Elder.
The term 'agnostic' was probably coined by T. H. Huxley during a speech to the Metaphysical Society in 1869. From the Greek 'agnostos', 'unknown', it was derived from St Paul's mention of an Athenian altar inscribed 'to the unknown god'. With these overtones of ancient philosophy, agnosticism became the tag of an emergent school of thought which posited that the existence of anything beyond the material and measurable should be considered unknowable. In this collection of seven essays, first published as (...)

This article examines shifts in educational and social governance taking place in Queensland, Australia, through Education Queensland's Industry School Engagement Strategy and Gateway Schools program. This significant educational initiative is set within the context of Queensland's social investment agenda first articulated in its education policy framework, Queensland State Education-2010. Stephen Bickham (1988). The Bishops' Pastoral: A New Theory of Justice. [REVIEW] Journal of Business Ethics 7 (6):437 - 443.
It is maintained that the American Catholic bishops' pastoral on the economy proceeds from and expounds a distinctive theory of justice. Central to this new theory is a close analogy between the economy of a nation and its political society. Since living in a nation entitles everyone to rights of participation in the political realm, so should it be in the economic. The theory is distinguished from various others, and its implications are analyzed. An explanation is given of how the (...)

I would like to thank the editors of Philosophy East and West for courteously asking me if I would like to respond to Matthew Dasti and Stephen Phillips' very thoughtful remarks about the review I wrote of Phillips' translation and commentary on the pratyakṣa chapter of Gaṅgeśa's Tattvacintāmaṇi, prepared in collaboration with N. S. Ramanuja Tatacharya (Phillips and Tatacharya 2004). Let me begin by reaffirming what I said at the beginning of my review, that the book is "a monumental (...)
