Online research in philosophy

Closely paralleling the history of psychology is the history of its critics, their theories, and their contributions. The Critique of Psychology is the first book to trace this alternate history, from a unique perspective that complements the many existing empirical, theoretical, and social histories of the field. In recent times, whistleblowing has become one of the most popularly debated issues of business ethics. Popular discussion has coincided with the institutionalisation of whistleblowing via legal and administrative practices, supported by the emergence of academic research in the field. However, the public practice and knowledge that has subsequently developed appears to construct a dichotomy of whistleblowing/silence ; that is, an employee elects either to ‘blow the whistle’ on organisational wrongdoing, or remain silent. We argue that this public transcript of (...) whistleblowing/silence overshadows the importance of continuing research into alternative (individual or collective) employee behaviour. Drawing on original research with a financial services organisation, our research uncovers a dissenting discourse that operates through implicit communication, such as codes, sarcasm and jokes. We suggest that this hidden transcript offers significant opportunities for employees to act ethically, and offers the potential to sustain an ethical organisational culture. (shrink)

We explore the match of a computational information foraging model to participant data on multi-page web search tasks and find its correlation on several important metrics to be too low to be used with confidence in the evaluation of user-interface designs. We examine the points of mismatch to inspire changes to the model in how it calculates information scent scores and how it assesses the utility of backing up from a lower-level page to a higher-level page. The outcome is a (...) new model that qualitatively matches participant behavior better than the original model, has utility equations more appealing to “common sense” than the original equations, and significantly improves the correlation between model and participant data on our metrics. After identifying the discipline of psychology’s history of contributing pioneers and leaders to the field of race research, epistemological problems in empirical psychology are identified including an adherence to a naïve empiricist philosophy of science. The reconstruction focuses on the underdetermined relationship between data and interpretation. It is argued that empirical psychology works under a hermeneutic deficit and that this deficit leads to the advancement of interpretations regarding racialized groups that are detrimental to those groups. Because these interpretations are understood (...) as actions that bring harm to certain racialized groups, and because these actions are made in the name of science and knowledge, the term epistemological violence is applied. Reflections regarding the meanings and consequences of this term in empirical psychology and the human sciences are presented. (shrink)

We compare Carnap's and Kuhn's views on science. Although there are important differences between them, the similarities are striking. The basis for the latter is a pragmatically oriented semantic conventionalist picture of science, which suggests that the view that post-positivist philosophy of science constitutes a radical revolution which has no interesting affinities with logical positivism must be seriously mistaken.

Vakiintuneeksi tavaksi on muodostunut puhua nykyfilosofiasta kahtiajakautuneena analyyttiseen ja mannermaiseen filosofiaan. Harvalla on kuitenkaan kovin selkeää käsitystä siitä, mitä näillä nimilapuilla tosi asiassa nimetään. Kirjaimellisesti ymmärrettynä vastakkainasettelu on näillä sanoilla tietysti monella tapaa ongelmallinen: Bernard Williams onkin äskettäin huomauttanut, että filosofian jakaminen mannermaiseen ja analyyttiseen on vähän kuin yrittäisi jakaa autot kahteen toisensa poissulkevaan luokkaan, etuvetoisiin ja japanilaisiin. Nimittäin, toinen kriteeri on sisällöllinen ja toinen maantieteellinen. Lisäksi terminologia sopii huonosti yhteen sen tosiasian kanssa, että analyyttisen filosofian juuret ovat mitä suurimmassa (...) määrin mannermaiset; onhan sen keskeinen taustahahmo Frege ja suurin edustaja Wittgenstein (Williams 1995). Williamsin kritiikissä on kieltämättä tietty perä: terminologia johtaa sellaisiin kummallisuuksiin kuin äskettäin ilmestynyt teos American Continental Philosophy. Johdonmukaisemmin, sisällöllisemmillä kriteereillä analyyttisen filosofian vastakohtana on usein pidetty fenomenologista filosofiaa. Ansiokkaassa väitöskirjassaan Juha Himanka on pyrkinyt valottamaan näiden kahden filosofiantradition välistä sisällöllistä eroa keskustelulla, jonka fenomenologi Bataille ja looginen empiristi Ayer kävivät 1950-luvulla lauseista ”Maa liikkuu” ja ”Aurinko oli olemassa ennen kuin oli ihmisiä”.
