Zhu Xu (2010). Laws, Causality and the Intentional Explanation of Action. Frontiers of Philosophy in China 5 (2):280-293.
Whether or not an intentional explanation of action necessarily involves law-like statements is related to another question, namely, is it a causal explanation? The Popper-Hempel Thesis (...) , which answers both questions affirmatively, inevitably faces a dilemma between realistic and universalistic requirements. However, in terms of W.C. Salmons concept of causal explanation, intentional explanation can be a causal one even if it does not rely on any laws. Based on this, we are able to refute three characteristic arguments for the claimreason is not a cause of action,” namely, theproper logicalargument, thelogical relationargument, and therule-followingargument. This rebuttal suggests that the causal relationship between reason and action can provide a justification for intentional explanations. (shrink)

Ann A. Pang-White (2016). Neo-Confucians and Zhu Xi on Family and Woman: Challenges and Potentials. In The Bloomsbury Research Handbook of Chinese Philosophy and Gender,. 69-88.
In Chinese philosophys encounter with modernity and feminist discourse, Neo-Confucianism often suffered the most brutal attacks and criticisms. InNeo-Confucians and Zhu Xi on <span (...)span> and Woman: Challenges and Potentials,” Ann A. Pang-White investigates Song Neo-Confuciansviews (in particular, that of Zhu Xi) on women by examining the Classified Conversations of Zhu Xi (Zhuzi Yulei),the Reflections on Things at Hand (Jinsi Lu), Further Reflections on Things at Hand (Xu Jinsi Lu), and other texts. Pang-White also takes a close look at the Song law regarding womens property <span class='Hi'>rightsspan> and the Song educational system. Surprisingly, Zhu exhibited a level of flexibility, though still limited, on these subjects. He was particularly adamant about the importance of womens education. In addition, even though he opposed the social practice and womens ownership of dowry (seeing it as a form of commercializing marriage), he did not absolutely oppose womens property <span class='Hi'>rightsspan>. However, his normative and philosophical view on the male/yang and female/yin relationship was less satisfactory. At one place, he used it to illustrate gender equity; at another place, he defended female subordination. Zhus social-political teaching on womens role could benefit from a more consistent development of his metaphysics of li-qi and yin-yang , which can bring new insight to the contemporary feministessentialist versus non-essentialistdebate on sex and gender. Stephanie Denison & Fei Xu (2010). Integrating Physical Constraints in Statistical Inference by 11-Month-Old Infants. Cognitive Science 34 (5):885-908.
Much research on cognitive development focuses either on early-emerging domain-specific knowledge or domain-general learning mechanisms. However, little research examines how these sources of knowledge interact. (...)span> mechanism. Results from three experiments suggest that, first, infants were able to use domain-specific knowledge to override statistical information, reasoning that sometimes a physical constraint is more informative than probabilistic information. Second, we provide the first evidence that infants are capable of applying domain-specific knowledge in probabilistic reasoning by using a physical constraint to exclude one set of objects while computing probabilities over the remaining sets. Renqiu Zhu (2009). The Formation, Development and Evolution of Neo-Confucianismwith a Focus on the Doctrine ofStilling the Naturein the Song Period. Frontiers of Philosophy in China 4 (3):322-342.
The formation of the discourse of Neo-Confucianism 1 in the Song period was a result of the interactions between many social and cultural trends. In the (...)development of the Neo-Confucian discourse, the Cheng brothers (Cheng Hao and Cheng Yi) played key roles with their charismatic thoughts and impelling personalities, while Zhu Xi pushed Neo-Confucian thought and discourse to a pinnacle with his broad knowledge and precise reasoning. In the warm discussions and debates between different schools and thoughts, the Neo-Confucian discourse proceeded towards completion and perfection, and evolved as contemporary topics and thinking modes changed. The essay argues thatding xing 定性 (stilling the nature)” was an important Neo-Confucian topic during the Song period. The doctrine ofstilling the natureinvolves much central Neo-Confucian discourse such as the definition of xing (human nature), the interior and exterior aspects of human nature, nature and qing (feelings, sentiments), nature and xin (mind, heart), nature and ren (benevolence, humanity, humaneness) and yi (righteousness), nature and shi (affair) or wu (thing, object), the practice of preservation and cultivation, etc. Therefore, an examination of the formation, development and evolution of Neo-Confucianism is of great importance to the study of its early history. This article specifically examines two important aspects of board <span class='Hi'>compositionspan> (i.e., the presence of outside directors and the presence of women directors) and their relationship with CSR performance in the Post-SOX era. With data covering over 500 of the largest companies listed on the U.S. stock exchanges and spanning 64 different industries, we find empirical evidence showing that greater presence of outside and women directors is linked to better CSR performance within a firms industry. Treating CSR performance as the reflection of a firms moral legitimacy, our study suggests that deliberate structuring of corporate boards may be an effective approach to enhance a firms moral legitimacy.
