Editions of the Commonwealth

A critical edition in French of the Six Livres de la République does not yet exist. A Latin-French critical edition (De Republica / La République) is being prepared for Droz of Geneva by M. Turchetti. In French the reader can consult the edition Fayard, 1986 which is based on the French text of 1593. The 1583 text is reproduced in facsimile and available from Scientia Verlag, 1971 which also prepared a facsimile of the 1641 Latin edition. In other languages the reader should consult: (English) The Six Books of a Commonwealth, Cambridge (Mass.), ed. K. D. MacRae, Harvard University Press, 1962, as well as the extracts in A. L. Fell, Bodin's Humanistic Legal System and Rejection of Medieval Political Theology, Boston, (Mass.), Oelgeschlager, Gunn and Hain, 1987. On Sovereignty. Finally, an abridged version in English translation, by M.J. Tooley, entitled Six Books of the Commonwealth (cited above as [To]) is available online.
