The author argues that the primary lesson of the so-Called logical and semantical paradoxes is that certain entities do not exist, Entities of which we mistakenly but firmly believe that they must exist. In particular, Russell's paradox teaches us that there is no such thing as the property which every property has if and only if it does not have itself. Why should anyone think that such a property must exist and, Hence, Conceive of russell's argument as a paradox rather (...) than a proof for the nonexistence of this property? the author traces this conviction to an uncritical acceptance of the so-Called principle of property abstraction and claims that this principle is false. It is simply not true, As one widely assumes, That propositional forms represent (complex) properties. Then it is argued, On independent grounds, That there are no complex properties, But only complex states of affairs. (shrink)

Conceptualism, like any other philosophical doctrine of comparable scope, has both ontological and epistemological aspects. Ontologically, however, conceptualism does not differ significantly from certain forms of nominalism. 1 At its root lies an epistemological thesis: All objects of sensory intuition are localized in space and time. 2 In this paper, I wish to explore some of the consequences of this thesis.

It is argued that, while there is no such property as truth, there is a feature of factuality which certain states of affairs have and others lack. Since states of affairs can appear before the mind as having this feature when, in reality, they do not have it, a most difficult epistemological problem arises, namely, how to distinguish between a state of affairs which merely appears to have factuality and a state of affairs which really is factual. The test for (...) factuality, it is maintained, is twofold. It consists, on the one hand, of perception and introspection, and on the other, of coherence. What we perceive and introspect is not only presented to us as factual, but justifiedly taken to be factual. In case of doubt, though, we cannot but fall back on coherence, comparing some of our beliefs, perceptions, assumptions etc. with others. (shrink)

Consider a visual field containing two red spots of the same shade of red. At least two sentences are true of it, namely, "this is red" and "that is red." Any satisfactory ontological analysis of this visual field must therefore do justice to the two facts that there are two spots and not merely one; and, that these two spots nevertheless have something in common.

This book contains fifteen essays, most of them published before, which were too late for inclusion in Dummett's Truth and Other Enigmas. As the author explains, his newly awakened interest in historical questions accounts for the fact that most of the essays bear on Frege's intellectual relations to other philosophers. In particular, there is a most interesting essay, "Frege's Kernsaetze zur Logik," which compares one of Frege's unpublished manuscripts with the Introduction to Lotze's Logik. Quite a few pages in the (...) book defend Dummett's interpretation of Frege against criticisms by Sluga, Baker and Hacker, Shanker, and Bell.
