New discoveries about materials and solar energy raise the possibility of a long-tenn shift of mining, refining, and manufacturing from Earth’s surface to locations outside Earth’s ecosphere, allowing Earth to begin to relax back toward its natural state. A little-discussed ambivalence toward the potential of space exploration exists among environmentalists. One camp sees it as a human adventure that may allow a bold initiative to improve Earth; another camp shies away from “heavy technology” and thus distrusts efforts as massive as (...) space exploration or utilization. Due to impending resource depletion on Earth, we may have only until the mid-twenty-first century to pursue the promising potential of space exploration to alleviate environmental problems of Earth. Subsequently, there may be too litde industlial base to support vigorous exploration and exploitation of resources in space. (shrink)

Some decades ago, Heidi Hartmann lamented that “[t]he ‘marriage’ between marxism and feminism has been like the marriage of husband and wife depicted in English common law: marxism and feminism are one, and that one is marxism.”[1] By this, she meant that attempts at a feminist theory had ultimately collapsed into marxism, and so succeeded only in rendering sex inequality derivative of, hence, secondary to class inequality, and as such to be overcome only by ending class inequality. These attempts (...) were in a sense self-defeating, negating the need from which they had emerged, the need for feminism as such. In 1982, Catharine MacKinnon confronted and attempted to remedy this. She developed a theory of sexuality as to feminism what work is to marxism, and thereby elevated feminism to a theory of the kind that marxism is, parallel rather than subordinate to it. She thus made sex inequality finally the issue. But, paradoxically, at the very same time, MacKinnon paralysed feminism, for she revealed men’s oppression of women as unknowable. If men’s oppression of women is unknowable, then feminism, as the movement to end that oppression, is impossible. Susan Bernick recognised this, saying, “MacKinnon’s legacy to feminism is the impossibility of any future feminism. Her account makes feminism theoretically impossible.”[2] This makes the most urgent task for feminism that of explaining how women can know men’s oppression of them. ZusammenfassungBeim Versuch, ein natürliches System der Wirklichkeit zu entwerfen, wird von der Vorstellung eines Schichtenbaus und von der kategorialen Erkenntnisweise im Sinne Nicolai Hartmanns ausgegangen. Dabei erweist sich einmal mehr die grundlegende Bedeutung der Gegensätzlichkeit in ihren verschiedenen Erscheinungsweisen. Insbesondere ist die Erfassung der Gesamtwirklichkeit nur unter einem Doppelaspekt möglich. Der diskursiv‐luminose Aspekt einer vierfach geschichteten, vieldimensionalen und raumzeitlich aufgespaltenen Wirklichkeit steht dem intuitiv‐numinosen Aspekt mit seiner schöpferischen, dem Raumzeitlichen entrückten Einheitsschau komplementär gegenüber. Erst beide Aspekte umfassen gemeinsam das Ganze (...) der Wirklichkeit.Der Schichtenbau der Wirklichkeit führt gleichzeitig, in Weiterentwicklung älterer Ideen, zu einer « natürlichen » Systematik der Wissenschaften, die einer jeden ihr Gebièt, aber auch ihre Schranken zuweist.RésuméPour essayer d'ébauchcr un système naturel de la réalité on part de la notion d'une structure stratifiée et d'une conception catégoriale de la connaissance telle que la conçolt Nicolai Hartmann. A ce propos se manifeste une fois de plus l'importance primordiale de l'opposition des contraires dans ses diverses manifestations. On ne peut en particulier comprendre la réalité dans sa totalité que sous un double aspect. A l'aspect discursif‐lumineux d'une réalité à quatre couches, multidimensionnelle divisée dans l'espacetemps, s'oppose de façon complémentaire l'aspect intuitif‐numineux avec sa vue créatrice d'un tout qui échappe à l'espace‐temps. Seule la conjonction de ces deux aspects embrasse la réalité tout entière.La structure stratifiée de la réalité aboutit tout en élargissant d'anciennes idées, à une systématique des sciences qui assigne à chacune à la fois son domaine et ses limites. Darwins bahnbrechendes Werk 'Über die Entstehung der Arten' (1859) löste eine neue Debatte aus, die weniger durch wissenschaftliche Forschung als durch weltanschauliche Proklamationen geprägt war. Sie nahm in Deutschland einen anderen Verlauf als in England: Die dort noch starke Physikotheologie war in Deutschland bereits einflußlos geworden, und der vorangegangene Materialismus-Streit hatte den Boden für die Rezeption der Lehre Darwins vorbereitet. Von Seiten des weltanschaulichen Materialismus wurde der Darwinismus wegen seiner Eliminierung eines zwecksetzenden göttlichen Verstandes als unverhoffte Bestätigung angesehen und als (...) eine neue und zudem wissenschaftlich abgesicherte "Schöpfungstheorie" rezipiert und zum Schlüssel für die Lösung aller wissenschaftlichen und philosophischen Rätsel stilisiert. By means of an analysis of Nicolai Hartmann's thought, the author attempts to show that his and, indeed, all ontological projects are unable to develop criteria showing why a certain ontology should be preferred over another. The reason for this is sought in the "gnoseo-ontological circle"--the fact that all attempts to state such criteria already imply a commitment to a certain ontology. It is impossible to appeal beyond this circle. Consequently, the only remaining choice is between skepticism and the (...) path which Heidegger has pointed out, a path which leads beyond all ontology. This article exams the philosophy of history of the now mostly-forgotten 19th Century philosopher, Eduard von Hartmann. Hartmann inverts Hegel’s rational teleology by his reliance on a notion of ‘unconscious ideas’. Purposes are a species of idea. All natural things, including unintelligent natural things, will purposes of which they are often not conscious. These unconscious ideas cannot be held by natural beings that lack intellect, so there must be some supra-naturalistic being, which Hartmann names the Metaphysical Unconscious, (...) that imposes purposes on unconsciously-acting agents. The course of human history is the gradual becoming-conscious of the ends posited by the Metaphysical Unconscious. Insofar as nature always achieves the purposes of the Metaphysical Unconscious this is the best of all possible worlds. Insofar as those purposes are realized irrespective of human happiness, historical progress becomes the gradual assurance of human misery. (shrink)

Models are of central importance in many scientific contexts. The centrality of models such as inflationary models in cosmology, general-circulation models of the global climate, the double-helix model of DNA, evolutionary models in biology, agent-based models in the social sciences, and general-equilibrium models of markets in their respective domains is a case in point (the Other Internet Resources section at the end of this entry contains links to online resources that discuss these models). Scientists spend significant amounts of time building, (...) testing, comparing, and revising models, and much journal space is dedicated to interpreting and discussing the implications of models.
