Academic Skepticism in Early Modern Philosophy.José Raimundo Maia Neto - 1997 - Journal of the History of Ideas 58 (2):199-220.
Although the skeptical crisis at the dawn of modern philosophy can be properly labelled Pyrrhonian specific features of the academic school of skepticism played an important role in this crisis. Academic skepticism becomes even more influential in post-Cartesian skepticism from Foucher to Hume.

    Huet sceptique cartésien.José Maia Neto - 2008 - Philosophiques 35 (1):223-239.
Pierre-Daniel Huet is one of the most important skeptics from the end of the 17th/begining of the 18th centuries. In this article, I show that Descartes is the main source of Huet’s skepticism by means of six remarks, each developed in a section of the article. 1) Huet discovered Cartesian doubt before he discovered ancient skeptical doubt ; 2) the skepticism exhibited in the Traité Philosophique de la Faiblesse de l’Esprit Humain and the anti-cartesianism exhibited in the Censura Philosophiae Cartesianae (...)

The skeptical cartesian background of Hume's "of the academical or sceptical philosophy".José R. Maia Neto - 2015 - Kriterion: Journal of Philosophy 56 (132):371-392.
ABSTRACT In section XII of the First Inquiry, Hume refers to the two Hellenistic schools of skepticism to present his own view of skepticism, which, however, depends on the ancient skeptics mainly indirectly. Hume's view of skepticism depends crucially on Descartes and post-Cartesian philosophers such as Pascal, Huet, Foucher and Bayle, who reacted skeptically to major Cartesian doctrines but followed one version or other of Descartes's methodical doubt. Although all these post-Cartesian philosophers are relevant in section XII, I focus on (...)

Skepticism in the Modern Age: Building on the Work of Richard Popkin.José Maia Neto, Gianni Paganini & John Christian Laursen (eds.) - 2009 - Boston: Brill.
This book reassesses the role and impact of skepticism in early modern philosophy, revisiting and reinterpreting the positions of some of the main early modern philosophers in relation to this tradition and showing its relevance to others who have not previously been connected to skepticism.

Academic Skepticism in Seventeenth-Century French Philosophy: The Charronian Legacy 1601-1662.José R. Maia Neto - 2014 - Cham: Imprint: Springer.
This book is the first systematic account of Pierre Charron's influence among the major French philosophers in the period (1601-1662). It shows that Charron's Wisdom was one of the main sources of inspiration of Pierre Gassendi's first published book, the Exercitationes adversus aristoteleos. It sheds new light on La Mothe Le Vayer, who is usually viewed as a major free thinker. By showing that he was a follower of Charron, La Mothe emerges neither as a skeptical apologist nor as a (...)
