The Automatic Activation of Emotion Words Measured Using the Emotional Face-Word Stroop Task in Late ChineseEnglish Bilinguals.Lin Fan, Qiang Xu, Xiaoxi Wang, Fei Xu, Yaping Yang & Zhi Lu - 2018 - Cognition and Emotion 32 (2):315-324.
In the current study, late ChineseEnglish bilinguals performed a facial expression identification task with emotion words in the task-irrelevant dimension, in either their first language or (...) second language. The investigation examined the automatic access of the emotional content in words appearing in more than one language. Significant congruency effects were present for both L1 and L2 emotion word processing. Furthermore, the magnitude of emotional face-word Stroop effect in the L1 task was greater as compared to the L2 task, indicating that in L1 participants could access the emotional information in words in a more reliable manner. In summary, these findings provide more support for the automatic access of emotional information in words in the bilingualstwo languages as well as attenuated emotionality of L2 processing. (shrink)

Early Menarche and its Relationship to Paternal Migrant Work Among Middle-School-Aged Students in China.Bingzheng Zhang, Ting Yu, Qiuxing Chen, Kaye Wellings, Theresa M. Oniffrey, Junrui Ma, Limin Huang, Suiqiong Fan, Lu Ma, Rui Li & Yuliang Zou - 2020 - Journal of Biosocial Science 52 (1):108-116.
Associations have been shown between fathers absence and menarcheal age, but most studies have focused on absence resulting from divorce, abandonment or death. Little research has (...)been conducted to evaluate the effect on menarcheal age of paternal absence through migrant work. In a sample of 400 middle school students, this study examined the association between paternal migrant work and menarcheal age against a backdrop of extensive rural-to-urban migration in China. Data were collected through a self-reported questionnaire, including social-demographic characteristics, aspects of family relationships, information about fathers migrant work and age at menarche. After adjusting for BMI, parent marital status and perceived relationship with mother, lower self-perceived quality of fatherdaughter relationship and lower frequency of contact with the father were associated with higher odds for early menarche. These findings suggest that the assumption that fathers absence for work influences the timing of menarche needs to be examined in the context of the quality of the fatherdaughter relationship and paternal care, which appear to play a critical role in the timing of menarche. These findings also emphasize the importance of enhancing paternal involvement and improving fatherdaughter relationships in the development of appropriate reproductive strategy in daughters. Truth-telling to competent patients is widely affirmed as a cardinal moral and biomedical obligation in contemporary Western medical practice. In contrast, Chinese medical ethics remains committed (...)to hiding the truth as well as to lying when necessary to achieve the family's view of the best interests of the patient. This essay intends to provide an account of the framing commitments that would both justify physician deception and have it function in a way authentically grounded in the familist moral concerns of Confucianism. It reflects on the moral conditions and possibilities for sustaining a Confucian understanding of truth-telling and consent in mainland China. (shrink)

The Family and Harmonious Medical Decision Making: Cherishing an Appropriate Confucian Moral Balance.X. Chen & R. Fan - 2010 - Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 35 (5):573-586.
This essay illustrates what the Chinese family-based and harmony-oriented model of medical decision making is like as well as how it differs from the modern Western (...) individual-based and autonomy-oriented model in health care practice. The essay discloses the roots of the Chinese model in the Confucian account of the family and the Confucian view of harmony. By responding to a series of questions posed to the Chinese model by modern Western scholars in terms of the basic individualist concerns and values embedded in the modern Western model, we conclude that the Chinese people have justifiable reasons to continue to apply the Chinese model to their contemporary health care and medical practice. Which Care? Whose Responsibility? And Why Family? A Confucian Account of Long-Term Care for the Elderly.Ruiping Fan - 2007 - Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 32 (5):495 – 517.
Across the world, socio-economic forces are shifting the locus of long-term care from the family to institutional settings, producing significant moral, not just financial costs. This (...) essay explores these costs and the distortions in the role of the family they involve. These reflections offer grounds for critically questioning the extent to which moral concerns regarding long-term care in Hong Kong and in mainland China are the same as those voiced in the United States, although family resemblances surely exist. Chinese moral values such as virtue and filial piety embedded in a Confucian moral and social context cannot be recast without distortion in terms of modern Western European notions. The essay concludes that the Confucian resources must be taken seriously in order to develop an authentic Chinese bioethics of long-term care and a defensible approach to long-term care policy for contemporary society in general and Chinese society in particular. The Ethical Orientations of Chinese Auditors and the Effect on the Judgements They Make.Gordon Woodbine, Ying Han Fan & Glennda Scully - 2012 - Asian Journal of Business Ethics 1 (2):195-216.
A study of 612 CPAs employed in four separate regions of the Peoples Republic of China shows that they exhibit ethical orientations that are not significantly (...)different from one another and that they do not, as a group identify with the Subjectivist description provided in the Forsyth et al. (Journal of Business Ethics 8(83):813833, 2008) meta-analytic international study involving the Ethical Position Questionnaire. Confirmatory factor analysis did however establish the validity of the instrument as a measure of idealistic and relativistic tendencies. It was established that the ethical tone within local accounting firms plays a significant role in forming ethical positions and that these variables together work to influence ethical judgement making with respect to issues involving independence and objectivity. The constructs of relativism and idealism act as reliable predictors of moral choice, but need to be carefully interpreted in the context of field research. The study highlights concerns about the ethicality of a fledgling group of professionals having to cope with the exigencies associated with the worlds fastest developing economy. (shrink)
