The traditional Christian version of the Golden Rule, some modern philosophical reformulations, and the Confucian version are compared. It is argued that the Confucian version, in contrast with its Western parallels, is based on shu as bodily or somatic interpersonal care and love, and thus should be understood first of all as a human "way" rather than as a divine rule, a way grounded in the human heart and a way for the human community.

This article has a hermeneutical interpretation of 'heng', one key word in the Laozi. The term 'heng' was not known until 1973 when the two silk manuscripts of the Laozi were unearthed in China. On the base of a reintroduction of heng into the text and of my philosophical reading of the Laozi's concept of 'heng', I argue for an alternative interpretation of dao as heng dao. I suggest that heng dao is neither a metaphysical substance nor mystical nothingness. It (...) is rather the differentiated appropriation of nature and life itself as experienced in the everyday. “Thing” and “nothing” are metaphysical themes of thinking for major philosophers both in the West and in East Asia, such as Heidegger, Kant, and Laozi 老子. In light of a discussion of Heidegger’s understanding of thing-ing and no-thing and of his critical interpretation of Kant on the same issue, I shall in this essay reconstruct a Laozian theory of thing and nothing. My conclusion is that thing and nothing are not two “things,” as often assumed by an epistemological approach, but (...) ontologically one thing cut by an absolute limit set up by human rationality which is contained either in our consciousness or in our languages. This essay shall discuss the moral feeling of being morally moved (daode gandong 道德感动) and explore its philosophical significances in understanding the nature of virtue ethics, especially that of Confucian ethics as exemplary ethics. I would like to argue that the feeling of being morally moved, similar to other feelings such as resentment or indignation, should be seen as one of the most important testimonies or manifestations of our morality or moral consciousness. It has played a very important role of (...) moral judgment and moral cultivation in the history of Chinese moral philosophy and in its everyday moral practices. Instead of being a testimony of morality as cold laws or norms, being morally moved is a testimony to our moral virtues, and it should be a living motive of our moral actions as well. (shrink)

The problem of ‘transcendence’/‘transcendental’/ ‘transcendent’ runs throughout Heidegger’s Being and Time, and it is central to many of its core concerns. The confusion about the different meanings of using the same words in the history of philosophy from Kant to Heidegger causes not only problems in understanding but also problems in the translation of the philosophical classics, especially in a non-Indo-European language such as Chinese. Through examination of Kant’s conception of the ‘transcendental’ and a critical textual analysis of Heidegger’s reinterpretation (...) of ‘transcendence’ as a temporal ecstatic Dasein’s existence, this essay attempts to show that the problem of transcendence, along with the debates over the Chinese translation of the relevant terms, is not merely a problem in a traditional theory of knowledge or epistemology. Rather, it belongs primarily and essentially to fundamental ontology and thus to Heidegger’s question of Being. (shrink)

This paper is a discussion of three approaches popular in contemporary studies of Confucianism for understanding the relationship between the self and others. I argue that all three of the influential conceptions of self that are prominent in these accounts (the “universal self,” the “organic self,” and the “relational self”) still stand in the shadow of the Indo-European metaphysical traditions of self or are insufficient for going beyond that shadow. Based on the ways in which Chinese characters are generated “genealogically,” (...) I propose an alternative understanding of the Confucian conception of self as a “genealogical self.” Finally, I shall show how this genealogical conception of self leads us to understand Confucian ethics as exemplary and communal rather than absolutely individualistic and normative. The essay examines three major Chinese translations of Heidegger’s Dasein as cizai, yuanzai and qinzai, and their linguistic and philosophical meanings respectively. Looking at these translations individually, I find that each term has its own strengths, and yet none is without drawbacks. Hence, no single one of them could provide a perfect correlation with the meaning and the linguistic composition of the original German word and Heidegger’s Dasein in all aspects. In the research of motion video, the existing target detection methods are susceptible to changes in the motion video scene and cannot accurately detect the motion state of the target. Moving target detection technology is an important branch of computer vision technology. Its function is to implement real-time monitoring, real-time video capture, and detection of objects in the target area and store information that users are interested in as an important basis for exercise. This article focuses on how to efficiently (...) perform motion detection on real-time video. By introducing the mathematical model of image processing, the traditional motion detection algorithm is improved and the improved motion detection algorithm is implemented in the system. This article combines the advantages of the widely used frame difference method, target detection algorithm, and background difference method and introduces the moving object detection method combining these two algorithms. When using Gaussian mixture model for modeling, improve the parts with differences, and keep the unmatched Gaussian distribution so that the modeling effect is similar to the actual background; the binary image is obtained through the difference between frames and the threshold, and the motion change domain is extracted through mathematical morphological filtering, and finally, the moving target is detected. The experiment proved the following: when there are more motion states, the recall rate is slightly better than that of the VIBE algorithm. It decreased about 0.05 or so, but the relative accuracy rate increased by about 0.12, and the increase ratio is significantly higher than the decrease ratio. Departments need to adopt effective target extraction methods. In order to improve the accuracy of moving target detection, this paper studies the method of background model establishment and target extraction and proposes its own improvement. (shrink)

Engineering failure investigations seek to reconstruct the actual causes of major engineering failures. The investigators need to establish the existence of certain past events and the actual causal relationships that these events bear to the failures in question. In this paper, I examine one method for reconstructing the actual causes of failure events, which I call "feature dependence". The basic idea of feature dependence is that some features of an event are informative about the features of its causes; therefore, the (...) investigators can use the features of a known failure event to reconstruct details of its causes. I make explicit the structure of feature dependence and the evidential basis of its key premises, and show how feature dependence works in the investigation of the American Airlines Flight 191 accident. Too often Buddhism has been subjected to the Procrustean box of western thought, whereby it is stretched to fit fixed categories or had essential aspects lopped off to accommodate vastly different cultural norms and aims. After several generations of scholarly discussion in English-speaking communities, it is time to move to the next hermeneutical stage. Buddhist philosophy must be liberated from the confines of a quasi-religious stereotype and judged on its own merits. Hence this work will approach Chinese Buddhism as a (...) philosophical tradition in its own right, not as an historical after-thought nor as an occasion for comparative discussions that assume the west alone sets the standards for or is the origin of philosophy and its methodologies.
