    Does a Molecule Have Structure?Hirofumi Ochiai - 2017 - Foundations of Chemistry 19 (3):197-207.
The classical model of the molecule assumes that it has a definite shape and structure like a mechanical object in the world of possible experience. This study deals with this assumption so as to shed some light on the foundations of the model. Arguments based on Kant’s theory of transcendental idealism suggest that neither shape nor structure are attributes of the molecule, but are rather contributions of the subject. This claim has great relevance to the questions of whether or not (...)

Overcoming skepticism about molecular structure by developing the concept of affordance.Hirofumi Ochiai - 2020 - Foundations of Chemistry 22 (1):77-86.
What chemists take as molecular structure is a theoretical construct based on the concepts of chemical bond, atoms in molecules, etc. and hence it should be distinguished from tangible structures around us. The practical adequacy of it has been demonstrated by the established method of retro-synthetic analysis, for instance. But it is not derived a priori from quantum mechanical treatments of the molecule and criticized for being irrelevant to the reality of the molecule. There is persistent skepticism about it. The (...)

Understanding Molecular Structure Requires Constructive Realism.Hirofumi Ochiai - 2020 - Foundations of Chemistry 22 (3):457-465.
Since molecules are inaccessible to immediate observation, our conception of the molecule is brought about by transdiction which entails invention of various transcendental ideas. In organic chemistry we think that molecules consist of atoms, bonds, functional groups, etc. This is, however, not the unique description of the molecule as is shown by quantum mechanical calculations, for example. Then, what description represents the real molecule? Before asking this question, we have to consider what the real molecule is in the first place. (...)

  11. Preference, Production and Capital: Selected Papers of Hirofumi Uzawa.Hirofumi Uzawa & Kenneth J. Arrow - 1989 - Cambridge University Press.
This volume contains a selection of Professor Uzawa's important contributions to mathematical economics. Subjects covered by these nineteen essays include consumption, production, equilibrium, capital, growth, planning, international trade, and the theory of social overhead capital. Written in the 1960s and early 1970s, the papers form a basis upon which economic theory has developed over the last twenty years. The collection includes some of Uzawa's classic contributions, such as 'Preference and Rational Choice in the Theory of Consumption', 'Time Preference, the Consumption (...)

  17. The Politics of Financial Crisis Response in Japan and the United States.Phillip Y. Lipscy & Hirofumi Takinami - 2013 - Japanese Journal of Political Science 14 (3):321-353.
We examine the politics of financial crisis response in Japan and the United States. Many existing accounts of Japan's of the 1990s have emphasized Japan-specific factors, such as structural problems, policy errors, and political dysfunction. We argue that Japan may have been subject to a form of first-mover disadvantage. Like innovation in the private sector, developing effective solutions to novel policy problems requires a messy process of discovery, experimentation, and repeated failure. Much as late-industrializing countries adapted the methods and technologies (...)

Dossier : Perspectives Franco-Brésiliennes Autour de L’Agroécologie – Accords de Coopération Entre le Brésil Et la France Dans le Domaine de la Sociologie Rurale Et Environnementale : Le Chemin de la Parité.Douglas Ochiai Padilha, Alfio Brandenburg & Jean-Paul Billaud - 2019 - Natures Sciences Sociétés 27 (1):73-81.

On April 5 2000, the Diet elected Yoshiro Mori as Japan's 55th prime minister. His predecessor, Keizo Obuchi, had suffered a stroke and became unable to carry out his official responsibility. Mori, who was the former Secretary General of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), inherited the three party coalition between the LDP, the new Komei Party and the Conservative Party, and reappointed all of Obuchi's cabinet members. Yohei Kono was reposted as the Minister of Foreign Affairs; Hideo Usui as (...)

Voters’ Left–Right Perception of Parties in Contemporary Japan: Removing the Noise of Misunderstanding.Hirofumi Miwa - 2015 - Japanese Journal of Political Science 16 (1):114-137.
The prevailing theory states that either Japanese voters have stopped ideologically distinguishing parties or that the main political parties in Japan have become more centrist in recent years. These arguments are based on survey questions asking citizens to locate parties on an ideological scale. However, these questions may suffer from noise caused by respondents who misinterpret the question wording or answer the questions inappropriately to mask their misunderstanding of the terms and . To address this problem by extracting only the (...)
