    Negation and Paraconsistent Logics.Soma Dutta & Mihir K. Chakraborty - 2011 - Logica Universalis 5 (1):165-176.
Does there exist any equivalence between the notions of inconsistency and consequence in paraconsistent logics as is present in the classical two valued logic? This is the key issue of this paper. Starting with a language where negation ( ${\neg}$ ) is the only connective, two sets of axioms for consequence and inconsistency of paraconsistent logics are presented. During this study two points have come out. The first one is that the notion of inconsistency of paraconsistent logics turns out to (...)

Pore-Pressure-Constrained, Rock-Physics-Guided Velocity Model Building Method: Alternate Solution to Mitigate Subsalt Geohazard.Nader Dutta, Bhaskar Deo, Yangjun Liu, Krishna Ramani, Jerry Kapoor & Denes Vigh - 2015 - Interpretation: SEG 3 (1):SE1-SE11.
We developed an integrated method that can better constrain subsalt tomography using geology, thermal history modeling, and rock-physics principles. This method, called rock-physics-guided velocity modeling for migration uses predicted pore pressure as a guide to improve the quality of the earth model. We first generated a rock-physics model that provided a range of plausible pore pressure that lies between hydrostatic and fracture pressure. The range of plausible pore pressures was then converted into a range of plausible depth varying velocities as (...)

Soma, Self, and Society: Somaesthetics as Pragmatist Meliorism.Richard Shusterman - 2011 - Metaphilosophy 42 (3):314-327.
Abstract: This article explains the pragmatist project of somaesthetics in five different ways. First, it clarifies the notion of soma as encompassing both subjective intentionality and material objectivity in the world. Second, it highlights the social dimensions of somaesthetics, building on the basic insight that the soma is always shaped by the social and physical environments in which it is nested. Third, it examines the similarities and differences between somaesthetics and the Merleau-Ponty tradition of somatic phenomenology, while answering (...)

Psyche and Soma is a multi-disciplinary exploration of the history of understanding of the human mind or soul and its relationship to the body, through the course of more than two thousand years. Thirteen specially commissioned chapters, each written by a recognized expert, discuss such figures as the doctors Hippocrates and Galen, the theologians St Paul, Augustine, and Aquinas, and philosophers from Plato to Leibniz.

    Soma and Psyche.Richard Shusterman - 2010 - Journal of Speculative Philosophy 24 (3):205-223.
In the ancient legend of Cupid and Psyche, Venus was jealous of Psyche’s beauty and plotted to punish her by binding her through love to a hideous creature that would appear once Cupid scratched Psyche with his arrow of desire while she slept, so that she would fall in love with the next thing she saw upon awakening. But when Cupid saw her beauty, he was so overwhelmed that he accidentally wounded himself with his own arrow and thus fell deeply (...)

This paper examines the origin and the development of the mechanistic model of the human body and health in terms of Max Weber's theory of rationalization. It is argued that the development of Western scientific medicine is a part of the broad process of rationalization that began in sixteenth century Europe as a result of the Reformation. The development of the mechanistic view of the human body in Western medicine is consistent with the ideas of calculability, predictability, and control — (...)

    Natura Economica in Environmental Valuation.Katrine Soma - 2006 - Environmental Values 15 (1):31-50.
Cost-benefit analysis is widely acknowledged to be an appropriate tool for providing advice to policy makers on the optimal use and management of natural resources. However, a great deal of research has indicated that the assumptions made in cost-benefit analysis concerning the natural environment diverge from real world observations. In this paper I discuss these observed divergences. To do so, I introduce the concept of Natura economica. Natura economica is the environment as it is understood in economic analysis in general, (...)

Dāya : The Conceptual Understanding of Inheritance and Gift in the Dāyabhāga.Manomohini Dutta - 2019 - Journal of Indian Philosophy 47 (1):111-131.
The Sanskrit term dāya is generally understood as inheritance. This study examines an influential inheritance treatise from medieval Bengal, the Dāyabhāga, to explore how dāya conceptually overlaps with gifts, even though in inheritance, the deceased does not physically hand over the inheritance to the heir, a situation which appears remarkably distinct from gift-giving. Recent Euro-American research has explored the overlap between gift and inheritance considering primarily testate situations. However, attention has not been paid to this overlap by Indological scholarship, though (...)

Modeling and Optimization of a Liquid Flow Process Using an Artificial Neural Network-Based Flower Pollination Algorithm.Pijush Dutta & Asok Kumar - 2019 - Journal of Intelligent Systems 29 (1):787-798.
Controlling liquid flow is one of the most important parameters in the process control industry. It is challenging to optimize the liquid flow rate for its highly nonlinear nature. This paper proposes a model of liquid flow processes using an artificial neural network and optimizes it using a flower pollination algorithm to avoid local minima and improve the accuracy and convergence speed. In the first phase, the NN model was trained by the dataset obtained from the experiments, which were carried (...)

Offender Theme Analyses in a Crime Narrative: An Applied Approach.Reshmi Dutta-Flanders - 2018 - International Journal for the Semiotics of Law - Revue Internationale de Sémiotique Juridique 31 (4):721-743.
There is a great deal of research on the structure of narrative and its mode, and on the narrative positioning and counter positioning of the actor in legal and social contexts. In offender narratives, personal experiences are embedded for observation and analysis of particular realities that contextualize a disposition of the perpetrator being ‘an undergoer’ rather than an ‘effector’ of actions. This is evaluated in the shift from a narrated action to a speaker utterance in prospection and also in anticipation (...)

Both Christianity and Plato claim that the psychē is immortal, that there is life after death. However, Plato’s theory of the psychē has been misinterpreted by some Christian scholars and theologians, who rail against Greek philosophy for distorting Christianity’s doctrine of the psychē, and who hold further that Plato’s theory of the psychē is a dualism. This thesis will prove that Plato does not assert the sōma-psychē bipartite, and try to solve the Christian debate between the sōma-psychē bipartite and sōma, (...)

After tracing some of the different interpretations of the Körper/Leib distinction in German phenomenology and philosophical anthropology, this paper compares these philosophical accounts of embodiment to the pragmatist approach of somaesthetics and its core concept of soma. Helmuth Plessner′s theory of embodiment gets particular attention because of its similarities to somaesthetics in terms of their shared emphasis on 1) the value of functional phasing between immanent spontaneity of simply living one′s body and more critically distanced somatic reflection, 2) the (...)

    Imaging the Visceral Soma : A Corporeal Feminist Interpretation.Ingrid Richardson & Carly Harper - 2006 - Indo-Pacific Journal of Phenomenology 6 (1):1-13.
Feminist philosophers of technoscience have long argued that it is vital that we question biomedical and scientific claims to an immaterial and disembodied objectivity, and also, more specifically, that we disable the conception of medical visualising technologies as neutral or transparent conduits to the “fact” of the body. In this paper we suggest that corporeal feminism is well situated to provide such a critique. Feminist phenomenologists over the past decade have theorised embodiment in a number of critical ways, many deriving (...)

Is Anadhyavasāya a Distinct Type of Non-Veridical Cognition ? Analysis of the Vaiśeṣika View.Soma Chakraborty - 2019 - Journal of the Indian Council of Philosophical Research 36 (3):373-385.
The Vaiśeṣika school is an important ancient system of Indian philosophy. According to the Vaiśeṣika philosophers, cognition or jñāna is of two types—vidyā and avidyā, and avidyā is of four types—saṃśaya, viparyaya, anadhyavasāya and svapna. Among these four kinds of avidyā, the third kind of non-veridical cognition, named ‘anadhyavasāya’, is acknowledged alone by the Vaiśeṣika school. Apart from the Vaiśeṣika school, no other school of Indian philosophy admits such a type of non-veridical cognition. Such a sort of non-veridical cognition is (...)
