Sensemaking in Military Critical Incidents: The Impact of Moral Intensity.Desiree E. M. Verweij, Dominique J. W. Meijer, Ellen Giebels & Miriam C. de Graaff - 2019 - Business and Society 58 (4):749-778.
This study explores the relationship between moral intensity and the use of different sensemaking strategies in military critical incidents. First, narratives of military personnel were used to select prototypical high/low moral intensity critical incidents. In a follow-up, a scenario study was conducted with active duty military personnel to examine the relationship between moral intensity and the use of sensemaking tactics. This study offers three main conclusions. First, the use of sensemaking tactics is strongly tied to the level of moral intensity (...)

A Case for Including Business Ethics and the Humanities in Management Programs.M. W. Small - 2006 - Journal of Business Ethics 64 (2):195-211.
The idea underlying this article was that the humanities in general and business ethics in particular should be more firmly embedded in business management programs. A number of areas have been identified for students to use as topics for research projects in management ethics. These ranged from Biblical and classical times to the present day. Some were drawn from sources that were less well known e.g. the De consolatione philosphiae ‘The Consolation of Philosophy’ by Boethius 524 AD. This was chosen (...)

    The Proper Ambition of Science.M. W. F. Stone & Jonathan Wolff (eds.) - 2000 - Routledge.
What is the proper relation between the scientific worldview and other parts or aspects of human knowledge and experience? Can any science aim at "complete coverage" of the world, and if it does, will it undermine--in principle or by tendency--other attempts to describe or understand the world? Should morality, theology and other areas resist or be protected from scientific treatment? Questions of this sort have been of pressing philosophical concern since antiquity. The Proper Ambition of Science presents ten particular case (...)

    Ethical Aspects of Research Into Alzheimer Disease. A European Delphi Study Focused on Genetic and Non-Genetic Research.A. van der Vorm, M. J. F. J. Vernooij-Dassen, P. G. Kehoe, M. G. M. O. Rikkert, E. van Leeuwen & W. J. M. Dekkers - 2009 - Journal of Medical Ethics 35 (2):140-144.
Background: Although genetic research into Alzheimer disease (AD) is increasing, the ethical aspects of this kind of research and the differences between ethical issues related to genetic and non-genetic research into AD have not yet received much attention. Objectives: (1) To identify and compare the five ethical issues considered most important by surveyed expert panellists in non-genetic and genetic AD research and (2) to compare our empirical findings with ethical issues in genetic research in general as described in the literature. E. M. Forster’s ‘The Machine Stops’: Humans, Technology and Dialogue.Ana Cristina Zimmermann & W. John Morgan - 2019 - AI and Society 34 (1):37-45.
The article explores E.M. Forster’s story The Machine Stops as an example of dystopian literature and its possible associations with the use of technology and with today’s cyber culture. Dystopian societies are often characterized by dehumanization and Forster’s novel raises questions about how we live in time and space; and how we establish relationships with the Other and with the world through technology. We suggest that the fear of technology depicted in dystopian literature indicates a fear that machines are mimicking (...)

    Transfers Between Logics and Their Applications.M. E. Coniglio & W. A. Carnielli - 2002 - Studia Logica 72 (3):367-400.
In this paper, logics are conceived as two-sorted first-order structures, and we argue that this broad definition encompasses a wide class of logics with theoretical interest as well as interest from the point of view of applications. The language, concepts and methods of model theory can thus be used to describe the relationship between logics through morphisms of structures called transfers. This leads to a formal framework for studying several properties of abstract logics and their attributes such as consequence operator, (...)

Practical Problems and Moral Values: Things We Tend to Ignore Revisited. [REVIEW]M. W. Small - 2002 - Journal of Business Ethics 39 (4):401 - 407.
The purpose behind this paper was twofold: (i) to reflect on situations where management had acted in an improper i.e. unethical manner, and (ii) to re-examine moral values that ought to have been addressed in working through these situations. The study included appraisals of power and authority, and the way these qualities were used or misused in a range of managerial and organisational situations. The paper illustrates difficulties associated with deciding which activities are illegal, which are unethical, and which are (...)

    ABET Criterion 3.F: How Much Curriculum Content is Enough?B. E. Barry & M. W. Ohland - 2012 - Science and Engineering Ethics 18 (2):369-392.
Even after multiple cycles of ABET accreditation, many engineering programs are unsure of how much curriculum content is needed to meet the requirements of ABET’s Criterion 3.f (an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility). This study represents the first scholarly attempt to assess the impact of curriculum reform following the introduction of ABET Criterion 3.f. This study sought to determine how much professional and ethical responsibility curriculum content was used between 1995 and 2005, as well as how, when, why, and (...)
