The Origins of the Lordships of Ramla and Lydda in the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem.Hans Eberhard Mayer - 1985 - Speculum 60 (3):537-552.
The Crusaders reached Ramla and Lydda, adjacent settlements on the road from Jaffa to Jerusalem, in 1099. Ramla was to become a secular lordship within the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem. Lydda, on the other hand, was to become an ecclesiastical lordship, like that of the archbishop of Nazareth and perhaps also the patriarch of Jerusalem. Very little is known about the early development of lordships in the Holy Land, and the examples of Ramla and Lydda are more complicated than has (...)

For the last forty years our knowledge of the genealogy of the lords of Beirut from the Brisebarre family has been based on the research done by M. E. Nickerson, which was a true advance over earlier work on the same problem. Nickerson proposed the following succession of lords of Beirut.

Defending Einstein: Hans Reichenbach's Writings on Space, Time and Motion.Hans Reichenbach - 2006 - Cambridge University Press.
Hans Reichenbach, a philosopher of science who was one of five students in Einstein's first seminar on the general theory of relativity, became Einstein's bulldog, defending the theory against criticism from philosophers, physicists, and popular commentators. This book chronicles the development of Reichenbach's reconstruction of Einstein's theory in a way that clearly sets out all of its philosophical commitments and its physical predictions as well as the battles that Reichenbach fought on its behalf, in both the academic and popular (...)

Examining the Link Between Ethical Leadership and Employee Misconduct: The Mediating Role of Ethical Climate. [REVIEW]David M. Mayer, Maribeth Kuenzi & Rebecca L. Greenbaum - 2010 - Journal of Business Ethics 95 (1):7-16.
Drawing on theory and research on ethical leadership and ethical climate, we examine ethical climate as a mediator of the relationship between ethical leadership and employee misconduct. Using a sample of 1,525 employees and their supervisors in 300 units in different organizations, we find support for our hypothesized model. We discuss theoretical and practical implications of these findings.

  32. Philosophical Egoism: Its Nature and Limitations: Hans Bernhard Schmid.Hans Bernhard Schmid - 2010 - Economics and Philosophy 26 (2):217-240.
Egoism and altruism are unequal contenders in the explanation of human behaviour. While egoism tends to be viewed as natural and unproblematic, altruism has always been treated with suspicion, and it has often been argued that apparent cases of altruistic behaviour might really just be some special form of egoism. The reason for this is that egoism fits into our usual theoretical views of human behaviour in a way that altruism does not. This is true on the biological level, where (...)

    Concepts: Where Subjectivism Goes Wrong: Hans-Johann Glock.Hans-Johann Glock - 2009 - Philosophy 84 (1):5-29.
The debate about concepts has always been shaped by a contrast between subjectivism, which treats them as phenomena in the mind or head of individuals, and objectivism, which insists that they exist independently of individual minds. The most prominent contemporary version of subjectivism is Fodor's RTM. The Fregean charge against subjectivism is that it cannot do justice to the fact that different individuals can share the same concepts. Proponents of RTM have accepted shareability as a ‘non-negotiable constraint’. At the same (...)

  34. What's Wrong with Exploitation?Robert Mayer - 2007 - Journal of Applied Philosophy 24 (2):137–150.
This paper offers a new answer to an old question. Others have argued that exploitation is wrong because it is coercive, or degrading, or fails to protect the vulnerable. But these answers only work for certain cases; counterexamples are easily found. In this paper I identify a different answer to the question by placing exploitation within the larger family of wrongs to which it belongs. Exploitation is one species of wrongful gain, and exploiters always gain at the expense of others (...)

What Makes a Problem an Ethical Problem? An Empirical Perspective on the Nature of Ethical Problems in General Practice.A. J. Braunack-Mayer - 2001 - Journal of Medical Ethics 27 (2):98-103.
Next SectionWhilst there has been considerable debate about the fit between moral theory and moral reasoning in everyday life, the way in which moral problems are defined has rarely been questioned. This paper presents a qualitative analysis of interviews conducted with 15 general practitioners (GPs) in South Australia to argue that the way in which the bioethics literature defines an ethical dilemma captures only some of the range of lay views about the nature of ethical problems. The bioethics literature has (...)

The Validity of the MSCEIT: Additional Analyses and Evidence.John D. Mayer, Peter Salovey & David R. Caruso - 2012 - Emotion Review 4 (4):403-408.
We address concerns raised by Maul (2012) regarding the validity of the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT). We respond to requests for clarifications of our model, and explain why the MSCEIT’s scoring methods stand up to scrutiny and why many reported reliabilities of the MSCEIT may be underestimates, using reanalyses of the test’s standardization sample of N = 5,000 to illustrate our point. We also organize findings from four recent articles that provide evidence for the MSCEIT’s validity based on (...)
