    Technology assessment and ethics.Barbara Skorupinski & Konrad Ott - 2002 - Poiesis and Praxis 1 (2):95-122.
Technology assessment (TA) is – for several reasons – not detachable from ethical questions. The development of institutions and concepts for TA, especially in the USA and Western Europe, has been marked by an increasing tendency to focus evaluative and normative questions. In the following paper, we point out, in as far as the common notions of TA are implicitly normative, why reflection upon conceptual options of TA inevitably leads to ethical questions, and that the key question of participation necessarily (...)

Glanz und Elend des Biodiversitäts-Konzeptes.Konrad Ott - 2021 - Jahrbuch für Recht Und Ethik 29 (1):79-101.
The concept of biodiversity has entered the law. Article intends to make the conceptual suppositions and the ethical profile of the biodiversity concept explicit. Article takes “biodiversity” as a hybrid concept located at the intersection of biological science, environmental ethics, and international conservation policies. It proceeds with sections on genealogy and definitions of the concept. Further, a matrix-scheme is construed serving the purpose to make debates on biodiversity more specific and precise. Moreover, different approaches in environmental ethics are assessed trying (...)

Über den Theoriekern und einige intendierte Anwendungen der Diskursethik. Eine strukturalistische Perspektive.Konrad Ott - 1998 - Zeitschrift für Philosophische Forschung 52 (2):268 - 291.
The so-called structuralistic view of theory-formation is applied to the discourse-theory of normative validity in order to shed some light on the relation between the core and some basic application of discourse ethics. First, metatheoretical notions as core, model and intended paradigmatic applications will be introduced. Second, the two supreme principles of discourse ethics will be justified and a basic model will be explained. Two possibilities to define the very core of this ethical theory will be distinguished. In the following (...)

Bringing Sustainability Down to Earth: Heihe River as a Paradigm Case of Sustainable Water Allocation.Konrad Ott, Lilin Kerschbaumer, Jan Felix Köbbing & Niels Thevs - 2016 - Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics 29 (5):835-856.
The article analyses a transdisciplinary wicked upstream–downstream conflict over water allocation in an arid region of Inner Mongolia. This conflict is about scarce water resources which can be either allocated to irrigation agriculture upstream or to preservation and restoration a rare ecosystem downstream. This conflict is located at the interface of environmental and agricultural ethics. The case study is about Heihe River, agricultural demands for irrigation in the region of Zhangye, and endangered Tugai forest at downstream Heihe in Ejina oasis. (...)

    Habermas on Nature.Yogi Hale Hendlin & Konrad Ott - 2016 - Environmental Ethics 38 (2):183-208.
Environmental ethicists typically consider Jürgen Habermas’s theory of communicative action to exclude moral consideration for nonhuman animals. Habermas's early work indeed limits relationships with nature to instrumental ones. Yet, interspersed throughout Habermas's writings are clear indications that nonhuman life deserves moral consideration, and that humans can enter into communicative relationships with nonhumans, however asymmetrical. Habermas’s anthropocentric theoretical foundations can achieve a revised, reflective equilibrium congruent with his persistent intuitions that nonhumans also possess powers of communication (but not discourse) that would (...)

Engineering the Climate: The Ethics of Solar Radiation Management is a wide-ranging and expert analysis of the ethics of the intentional management of solar radiation. This book will be a useful tool for policy-makers, a provocation for ethicists, and an eye-opening analysis for both the scientist and the general reader with interest in climate change.

How language works — its functions, mechanisms, and limitations — matters to the early moderns as much as it does to contemporary philosophers. Many of the moderns make reflection on language central to their philosophical projects, both as a tool for explaining human cognition and as a weapon to be used against competing views. Even in philosophers for whom language is less central, we can find important connections between their views on language and their other philosophical commitments.

Report of a visit to Prof HLA Hart in Oxford.Walter Ott & Translated with Commentary by Iain Stewart - 2023 - Jurisprudence 14 (2):254-261. Translated by Iain Stewart.
In 1985, Swiss legal philosopher Walter Ott visited Herbert Hart in Oxford and made this record of their meeting, which casts novel light on some of Hart’s ideas. Ott engaged Hart in a fresh encounter with the legal philosophy of Gustav Radbruch, particularly Hart’s and Radbruch’s reasons for a minimum content of justice in law. They also discussed the grudge informer, state responsibility under laws of an earlier régime, and questions of the definition and falsifiability of legal theories. Hart surprisingly (...)

Service robotics: an emergent technology field at the interface between industry and services.Ingrid Ott - 2012 - Poiesis and Praxis 9 (3-4):219-229.
The paper at hand analyzes the economic implications of service robots as expected important future technology. The considerations are embedded into global trends, focusing on the interdependencies between services and industry not only in the context of the provision of services but already starting at the level of the innovation process. It is argued that due to the various interdependencies combined with heterogenous application fields, the resulting implications need to be contextualized. Concerning the net labor market effects, it is reasonable (...)

Comparative Confirmation and the Problem of Evil.Richard Otte - 2012 - In Jake Chandler & Victoria S. Harrison (eds.), Probability in the Philosophy of Religion. Oxford University Press. pp. 127.
In this chapter probability and confirmation theory are used to investigate the problem of evil, concentrating on whether a theist should consider our ignorance of a good reason for God to permit evil to support a non-religious alternative over a typical theist's beliefs. It is argued that according to Likelihoodism, our ignorance of a good reason does not favor a competing hypothesis over the religious view that there is an incomprehensible good reason for God to permit evil. Bayesian accounts of (...)

Decolonial Aesthetics I: Tangled Humanism in the Afro-European Context.Michaela Ott & Babacar Mbaye Diop (eds.) - 2023 - Springer Berlin Heidelberg.
The publication aims to make suggestions for a 'decolonisation of aesthetics' within an Afro-European framework. The texts (whose authors come from different cultural contexts between Germany, France, Senegal, Benin, Nigeria and Tunesia) do not only refer to heterogenous aesthetic practices understood as subversive and decolonial strategies, but also discuss philosophical questions of a renewed (non-in)dividual humanism. The artistic practices analyzed include artistic installations and ensembles as well as actions in urban and rural space, deceptive manœuvres at the borders and their (...)
