Australian public understandings of artificial intelligence.Neil Selwyn & Beatriz Gallo Cordoba - 2022 - AI and Society 37 (4):1645-1662.
In light of the growing need to pay attention to general public opinions and sentiments toward AI, this paper examines the levels of understandings amongst the Australian public toward the increased societal use of AI technologies. Drawing on a nationally representative survey of 2019 adults across Australia, the paper examines how aware people consider themselves to be of recent developments in AI; variations in popular conceptions of what AI is; and the extent to which levels of support for AI are (...)

    Capacity Assessment in Emergency Surgery.Selwyn O. Rogers & Darren S. Bryan - 2023 - Journal of Clinical Ethics 34 (3):270-272.
Informed consent is a necessary component of the ethical practice of surgery. Ideally, consent is performed in a setting conducive to a robust patient-provider conversation, with careful consideration of risks, benefits, and outcomes. For patients with medical or surgical emergencies, navigating the consent process can be complicated and requires both careful and expedited assessment of decision-making capacity. We present a recent case in which a patient in need of emergency care refused intervention, requiring urgent capacity assessment and a modification to (...)

Knowing the (Datafied) Student: The Production of the Student Subject Through School Data.Neil Selwyn, Luci Pangrazio & Bronwyn Cumbo - 2022 - British Journal of Educational Studies 70 (3):345-361.
This paper considers the subjectivation of students in light of the increasing amounts of digital data that are now being produced within schools. Taking a lead from critical data studies and the sociology of numbers, the paper draws on staff interviews in three Australian secondary schools to explore the various types of student data being generated, and the forms of student subjectivities that result. In particular, the paper contrasts the ‘holistic’ possibilities that some school leaders and administrators ascribe to data (...)

Tuberculosis and AIDS: Epidemiologic, Clinical, and Social Dimensions.Peter A. Selwyn - 1993 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 21 (3-4):279-288.
In little more than a decade, the AIDS epidemic has exerted a profound effect on morbidity and mortality among young adults and children in many parts of the world. One of the more dramatic aspects of AIDS is that it seems to have arisen almost spontaneously as a new epidemic, spreading rapidly within at-risk populations in a way that is unprecedented for the serious infectious diseases of recent memory. Tuberculosis, on the other hand, had only recently been considered a disease (...)

Information Relevance Model of Customized Privacy for IoT.Wei Zhou & Selwyn Piramuthu - 2015 - Journal of Business Ethics 131 (1):19-30.
Motivated by advances in mass customization in business practice, explosion in the number of internet of things devices, and the lack of published research on privacy differentiation and customization, we propose a contextual information relevance model of privacy. We acknowledge the existence of individual differences with respect to unique security and privacy protection needs. We observe and argue that it is unfair and socially inefficient to treat privacy in a uniform manner whereby a large proportion of the population remain unsatisfied (...)

Doing data differently? Developing personal data tactics and strategies amongst young mobile media users.Luci Pangrazio & Neil Selwyn - 2018 - Big Data and Society 5 (1).
Large amounts of personal data are generated through young people’s engagements with mobile media, with these data increasingly used by advertisers, content developers and other third parties to profile, predict and position individuals. This has prompted growing concerns over the ability of mobile media users to develop informed stances towards how and why their data is being used, i.e. to build ‘conscious’ and/or ‘resistant’ forms of ‘data agency’. This paper explores ways of developing the critical consciousness and resistant practices of (...)

This book explores the relation of John Henry Newman's idea of conscience to what he called conscience "in the ordinary sense of the word," examining such neglected difficulties in this area as the relation between individual conscience and the authority of the church, and rights of conscience.

Technology Regulation Policy for Business Ethics: An Example of RFID in Supply Chain Management. [REVIEW]Wei Zhou & Selwyn Piramuthu - 2013 - Journal of Business Ethics 116 (2):327-340.
With the increase in use of a technology, its misuse possibility also increases in general. Moreover, there are instances where new technologies are implemented without thoroughly testing for vulnerabilities. We consider RFID, a disruptive technology, and related vulnerabilities in existing supply chain applications from an ethics perspective. We develop an extended ethics model to incorporate the effects of emerging information and communication technologies, specifically that of RFID systems, including technology selection, social consequences, and practitioners’ rationality. We introduce a set of (...)

Marxism, Colonialism, and Cricket: C. L. R. James's Beyond a Boundary.David Featherstone, Christopher Gair, Christian Høgsbjerg & Andrew Smith (eds.) - 2018 - Duke University Press.
Widely regarded as one of the most important and influential sports books of all time, C. L. R. James's _Beyond a Boundary_ is—among other things—a pioneering study of popular culture, an analysis of resistance to empire and racism, and a personal reflection on the history of colonialism and its effects in the Caribbean. More than fifty years after the publication of James's classic text, the contributors to _Marxism, Colonialism, and Cricket_ investigate _Beyond a Boundary_'s production and reception and its implication (...)

Dying in the twenty-first century: toward a new ethical framework for the art of dying well.Lydia S. Dugdale (ed.) - 2015 - Cambridge, Massachusetts: The MIT Press.
Physicians, philosophers, and theologians consider how to address death and dying for a diverse population in a secularized century. Most of us are generally ill-equipped for dying. Today, we neither see death nor prepare for it. But this has not always been the case. In the early fifteenth century, the Roman Catholic Church published the Ars moriendi texts, which established prayers and practices for an art of dying. In the twenty-first century, physicians rely on procedures and protocols for the efficient management (...)

College Life: Letters to an Under-Graduate.Thomas Whytehead - 2017 - Cambridge University Press.
These 'letters to an undergraduate' were published in 1845, two years after the death of their author, Thomas Whytehead. His outstanding student career at Cambridge suggested that he would remain in academic life, but having been ordained a deacon and then a priest, he volunteered for missionary work, and in 1841 sailed for the southern hemisphere as chaplain to the newly appointed Bishop Selwyn. He became seriously ill on arrival in Australia, and died in New Zealand the following year. (...)
