Née de l'inquiétude du coeur humain, la métaphysique est un entretien de longue durée sur le sens des choses. Son idée de fond est que leur cours est sensé et qu'il est sensé de le penser. Que signifie au juste ce sens des choses? S'agit-il d'une simple vue de l'esprit, d'une observation ou d'un pressentiment? Afin de mieux saisir et même de renouveler le projet essentiel de la métaphysique, ce livre se penche sur cette présupposition herméneutique de toute métaphysique, mais aussi sur les implications métaphysiques de l'effort herméneutique lui-même. Grondin situates Gadamer's concerns in the context of traditional philosophical issues, showing, for example, how Gadamer both continues and significantly modifies Descartes' approach to the philosophical problem of method and advances rather than simply follows Heidegger's treatment of the relationship of thinking to language. In this wide-ranging historical introduction to philosophical hermeneutics, Jean Grondin discusses the major figures from Philo to Habermas, analyzes conflicts between various interpretive schools, and provides a persuasive critique of Gadamer's view of hermeneutic history, though in other ways Gadamer's Truth and Method serves as a model for Grondin's approach. Grondin begins with brief overviews of the pre-nineteenth-century thinkers Philo, Origen, Augustine, Luther, Flacius, Dannhauer, Chladenius, Meier, Rambach, Ast, and Schlegel. Jean Grondin’s starting point in his impressive book is what Hans-Georg Gadamer refers to as the universal claim of hermeneutics. Gadamer is better known for the limits his hermeneutics seems to place on universal claims. Against the reliance the Enlightenment placed on the insights of a reason common to humanity, Gadamer stresses the prejudiced and partial character of attempts to understand meaning. And against more contemporary attempts to ground Enlightenment conceptions in universal human competencies, he stresses the historicity (...) and finitude of human knowledge. Our attempts to understand the meaning of texts, conversations, historical events, and social actions and practices are conditioned by the horizon of our language, our own historical experiences, and our assumptions and expectations. Still, Gadamer ends his Truth and Method by stressing not only the linguistic character of understanding but the infinite capacity of all languages to find and express new dimensions of meaning. “Language,” he writes, “forestalls any objection to its jurisdiction. The hermeneutical circle is one of the most fundamental and contentious doctrines of hermeneutical theory. In its most basic form in contemporary hermeneutics, it is the idea that we always understand or interpret out of some presuppositions. Hermeneutical thinkers like Heidegger, Bultmann, Ricoeur, and Gadamer view the hermeneutical circle favorably since it constitutes for them an inescapable and positive element of understanding: as finite and historical beings, we understand because we are guided by anticipations, expectations, and questions. For them, the (...) key is not to escape the hermeneutical circle, but, to enter into it in the right way. The notion of the hermeneutical circle is recent, but its roots go back to antiquity and ancient rhetoric. The hermeneutical circle, Heidegger contends, describes the constant and ongoing process of trial and error, where one always strives to develop the right anticipations which have to be “borne out by the things themselves”. Based on some interpretations about the Critique of Pure Reason, the author holds a real answer to the question about the possibility of Metaphysics remains in the uncertainty there. Without any proper Conclusion of the work, this question is displaced to the background and it is, in certain way, superseded by the question about God's existence and a future life. In a world allegedly lacking a moral compass, tolerance has become the major virtue of our time. All profess to be tolerant, but how tolerant are we in reality? As a case in point, how tolerant are philosophers themselves? A short overview of philosophy seems to suggest that they are less tolerant than one might imagine. A few reasons for this are provided : on the one hand, their commitment to issues of truth, logic and argument makes them perhaps intolerant (...) of what they view as blatantly absurd or flawed views; on the other hand, the often very ideological nature of philosophy itself does its part to make philosophers less open to differing or opposite points of view. It rests on a conception of good and evil, of sin and expiation, on a history of fall and salvation, regulating practices, beliefs and hopes. To what extent can it be viewed as a form of religion?

We have many reasons to be grateful to Gianni Vattimo for his ongoing contribution to philosophy and public life. Undoubtedly, his most decisive philosophical impulses have come from the German philosophical tradition, and mostly from the Holy Trinity of Nietzsche, Heidegger and Gadamer, who was his teacher. Yet, he was not German, but a proud Italian, and, for some reason, more able than others to carry this tradition further. The issue I would like to discuss here is whether hermeneutics, and (...) thus philosophy itself, must be seen as a form of nihilism. If nihilism only means a tolerance for the view of others to the extent that they do not violently limit the liberty of others, one can agree with Gianni Vattimo. But if one understands under “nihilism” the notion that there are no truths in the sense of adaequatio, one can challenge this view. Vattimo often faults Gadamer for not acknowledging fully the consequences of his own thought, i.e. the nihilistic consequences of his hermeneutic ontology. Yet one must ask: Why is it that Gadamer failed to proclaim a nihilistic hermeneutics? In other words, why did Gadamer resist the postmodernism of some of his followers? (shrink)

La phénoménologie a connu trop peu de sommets créateurs depuis Husserl et Heidegger pour qu’il soit possible d’ignorer le dernier ouvrage de Jean-Luc Marion, aussi superbement écrit qu’il est ambitieux. Certes, de très exhaustives encyclopédies conçues par nos collègues américains, pour lesquels le terme de phénoménologie sert un peu d’équivalent à celui de philosophie continentale, recenseront des légions de phénoménologues depuis Husserl et Heidegger, mais aucun n’aura eu d’impact vraiment déterminant sur la conception même de la discipline. Ces listes (...) comprendront de redoutables penseurs comme Jean-Paul Sartre, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Emmanuel Levinas et Paul Ricœur, où l’on reconnaîtra les plus illustres représentants de la tradition de la phénoménologie française. Jean Grondin widmet sich in dieser Einführung den Ursprüngen der Hermeneutik, ihren wichtigsten philosophischen Vertretern und den Diskussionen, die sie hervorgerufen hat.

Depuis l'Antiquité, la philosophie prétend à l'universalité. Les autres sciences roulent sur des objets particuliers, la philosophie promet une considération universelle de l'être dans sa totalité, le plus souvent afin d'en expliquer le principe. La philosophie, dans son acception onto-théologique, s'est ainsi comprise comme science a priori de ce qui est. La découverte moderne de l'ordre interprétatif l'a cependant mise dans un embarras : car si tous les savoirs, y compris la philosophie, ne sont que des interprétations, aucune prétention à (...) l'universalité ne paraît plus possible. A tout le moins, la philosophie ne peut défendre sa légitimité que si elle s'établit sur l'universalité de l'interprétation. Ce qui met en question la philosophie pourrait alors seulement devenir l'occasion d'une nouvelle attestation. Cette théorie est l'affaire de l'herméneutique. Ce livre se propose d'en reconstruire l'histoire afin de préparer une conception herméneutique de la philosophie, qui ne renonce ni à l'être, ni à l'a priori, ni à l'universalité. C'est l'enjeu de l'ontologie universelle du langage élaborée dans le sillage de Heidegger et Gadamer, en conformité avec le dessein implicite de toute la tradition herméneutique, de saint Augustin à Schleiermacher et Dilthey. Mais si l'herméneutique se met à l'écoute du langage, c'est pour montrer que le discours procède toujours d'un horizon de sens qui l'excède, qu'évoquait la primitive notion, réhabilitée ici, d'un " verbe intérieur ". L'herméneutique voudrait ainsi affoler la fixation sur le langage effectif et propositionnel qui régit plusieurs formes, analytiques et phénoménologiques, de la pensée contemporaine. J. G. (shrink)

Cet article se propose d’en faire ressortir le sens, la portée, mais aussi les difficultés.
