    On the Special Logic Thesis in Chinese Philosophy.Paul C. L. Tang - 1997 - Metaphilosophy 28 (4):371-384.
I address the problem of whether philosophy can be international by its claim to represent rationality, hence universality. I argue in favor of this claim by focusing on the special logic thesis in Chinese philosophy. This thesis holds that a different type of logic must be used when studying the Chinese texts. I argue at length against the special logic thesis by examining the problem of human nature in the Confucian philosophers Mencius, Hsün Tzu and Kao Tzu. I show how (...)

Paradigm Shifts, Scientific Revolutions, and the Unit of Scientific Change: Towards a Post-Kuhnian Theory of Types of Scientific Development.Paul C. L. Tang - 1984 - PSA: Proceedings of the Biennial Meeting of the Philosophy of Science Association 1984:125 - 136.
One of the central problems arising from just the descriptive aspect of Kuhn's theory of scientific development by revolutions concerns the problem of generality. Is Kuhn's theory general enough to encompass the development of all the sciences, including both the natural sciences and the social sciences? The answer to this question is no. It is argued that this negative answer is due not to the nature of the sciences themselves but to the nature of Kuhn's theory and, in particular, its (...)

The Monoamine Hypothesis, Placebos and Problems of Theory Construction in Psychology, Medicine, and Psychiatry.Paul C. L. Tang - 1998 - The Paideia Archive: Twentieth World Congress of Philosophy 37:334-341.
Can there be scientific theories in psychology, medicine or psychiatry? I approach this question through an in-depth analysis of a typical experiment for clinical depression involving the monoamine hypothesis, drug action, and placebos. I begin my discussion with a reconstruction of Adolph Grünbaum's conceptual analysis of 'placebo,' and then use his notion of "intentional placebo" to discuss a typical experiment using the monoamine hypothesis, two drugs and a placebo. I focus on the theoretical aspects of the experiment, especially on the (...)

Abstract“Comprehensive Healthcare for America” is a largely single-payer reform proposal that, by applying the insights of behavioral economics, may be able to rally patients and clinicians sufficiently to overcome the opposition of politicians and vested interests to providing all Americans with less complicated and less costly access to needed healthcare.

Measurement of Motivation States for Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior: Development and Validation of the CRAVE Scale.Matthew A. Stults-Kolehmainen, Miguel Blacutt, Nia Fogelman, Todd A. Gilson, Philip R. Stanforth, Amanda L. Divin, John B. Bartholomew, Alberto Filgueiras, Paul C. McKee, Garrett I. Ash, Joseph T. Ciccolo, Line Brotnow Decker, Susannah L. Williamson & Rajita Sinha - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Physical activity, and likely the motivation for it, varies throughout the day. The aim of this investigation was to create a short assessment (CRAVE: Cravings for Rest and Volitional Energy Expenditure) to measure motivation states (wants, desires, urges) for physical activity and sedentary behaviors. Five studies were conducted to develop and evaluate the construct validity and reliability of the scale, with 1,035 participants completing the scale a total of 1,697 times. In Study 1, 402 university students completed a questionnaire inquiring (...)

An Intensional Type Theory: Motivation and Cut-Elimination.Paul C. Gilmore - 2001 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 66 (1):383-400.
By the theory TT is meant the higher order predicate logic with the following recursively defined types: 1 is the type of individuals and [] is the type of the truth values: [$\tau_l$,..., $\tau_n$] is the type of the predicates with arguments of the types $\tau_l$,..., $\tau_n$. The theory ITT described in this paper is an intensional version of TT. The types of ITT are the same as the types of TT, but the membership of the type 1 of individuals (...)

?Tienes Culo? How to Look at Vida Guerra.Karina L. Cespedes-Cortes & Paul C. Taylor - 2013 - In Peg Brand Weiser (ed.), Beauty Unlimited. Indiana University Press. pp. 218-242.
Vida Guerra is a Cuban model from northern New Jersey. She made her name in hiphop videos and in "gentlemen's magazines" but quickly became in intermediate supermodel, with her own calendars, making-of-the-calendar DVDs, official website, fan websites, television show, and controversy over a "leaked" nude photo. . . . Vida's popularity has caused one writer to suggest "You may now move over J-Lo, and make way for Vida;" in short, tiene culo, to borrow the Spanish slang that adorns one of (...)

    Churchland's metamers.Rolf G. Kuehni & C. L. Hardin - 2010 - British Journal for the Philosophy of Science 61 (1):81-92.
Paul Churchland proposed a conceptual framework for translating reflectance profiles into a space he takes to be the color qualia space. It allows him to determine color metamers of spectral surface reflectances without reference to the characteristics of visual systems, claiming that the reflectance classes that it specifies correspond to visually determined metamers. We advance several objections to his method, show that a significant number of reflectance profiles are not placed into the space in agreement with the qualia solid, (...)

The impact of emotional expressions on children’s trust judgments.Yulong Tang, Paul L. Harris, Hong Zou & Qunxia Xu - 2018 - Cognition and Emotion 33 (2):318-331.
ABSTRACTResearch on the development of selective trust has shown that young children do not indiscriminately trust all potential informants. They are likely to seek and endorse information from individuals who have proven competent or benign in the past. However, research on trust among adults raises the possibility that children might also be influenced by the emotions expressed by potential informants. In particular, they might trust individuals expressing more positive emotion. Indeed, young children’s trust in particular informants based on their past (...)

In this consensus report by a diverse group of academics who conduct and/or are concerned about social and behavioral genomics (SBG) research, the authors recount the often‐ugly history of scientific attempts to understand the genetic contributions to human behaviors and social outcomes. They then describe what the current science—including genomewide association studies and polygenic indexes—can and cannot tell us, as well as its risks and potential benefits. They conclude with a discussion of responsible behavior in the context of SBG research. (...)

Telemedicine in Primary Health: The Virtual Doctor Project Zambia.Evans N. Mupela, Paul Mustarde & Huw L. C. Jones - 2011 - Philosophy, Ethics, and Humanities in Medicine 6:9-.
This paper is a commentary on a project application of telemedicine to alleviate primary health care problems in Lundazi district in the Eastern province of Zambia. The project dubbed 'The Virtual Doctor Project' will use hard body vehicles fitted with satellite communication devices and modern medical equipment to deliver primary health care services to some of the neediest areas of the country. The relevance and importance of the project lies in the fact that these areas are hard-to-reach due to rugged (...)

This paper explores the subject of ethics expertise. We suggest that this is a topic which has been badly neglected despite ongoing discussions about subjects which presuppose a particular conception of expertise (e.g., codes of conduct, certification requirements). In addition, given significant challenges to any conception of ethical expertise, we try to determine whether it is possible to provide a meaningful and substantive account of it. The paper moves from more abstract discussion of the idea to grounding a particular model, (...)
