  1. Ang Pagbungkal sa Konseptong Relihiyon sa Talasalitaan ni Bergaño bilang Pagtutulay sa Kultura-Pananampalataya ng mga Kapampangan sa Ika-18 Sigl.Jericho B. Dela Cruz & Oliver Manarang - 2020 - Mabini Review 9:33-79.

  2. Sen and Žižek on the Multiculturalist Approach to Non-Violence.Marlon Jesspher De Vera - 2020 - Mabini Review 9:111-134.
This paper analyzes areas of convergence in the works of Amartya Sen and Slavoj Žižek in their criticisms of the multiculturalist approach to non-violence. First, Žižek’s characterization of the liberal discourse of guilt and fear is presented. Then, Sen’s key ideas on multiculturalism, tolerance, and rational critique are explicated. Next, a synthesis of Sen and Žižek’s notions of universality, freedom, and rationality, as well as of their critical conceptions of globalization and anti-globalization are discussed. Subsequently, Sen and Žižek’s divergences on (...)

This paper seeks to provide a critical reading of the photographs of photographer Eduardo Masferré. The photos reviewed were part of the collection in E. Masferré, People of the Philippine Cordillera Photographs, 1934-1956 published in 1988. The book showcases the body of work of Masferré, a Spanish Filipino who is part of the Kankana-ey tribe through his mother. Considered as the father of Philippine photography, Masferré’s photos mirror his talent as well as reflect images, life, and work of the Igorots (...)

  5. Caution: There is No COVID 19 Article in this Issue.Joseph Reylan Viray - 2020 - Mabini Review 9:i-iv.
The year 2020 was arguably the most disruptive in modern history. It has a profound impact on research and pedagogy. There was a dramatic increase of COVID-19 scholarship within the areas of health science, social science, and humanities. Slavoj Zizek, a radical philosopher, was one of the first scholars to write a book on pandemic outside of natural and pure science (Zizek 2020). The book was published approximately 100 days after China informed the World Health Organization that the then-unnamed virus (...)

  6. Visualizing Community: Images of Poverty in a Philippine Rural Community.Joseph Reylan Viray, Raul Roland Sebastian, Ronillo B. Viray & Nelson S. Baun - 2020 - Mabini Review 9:135-159.
The study zeroed in on the perception of college students who are exposed to sights of poverty in their immediate environment. The student-participants were asked to provide their perception, understanding, and behaviour towards poverty using the photographs that they took on their own. In qualitative research practice, this methodology is called photo elicitation. It was revealed, among others, that the participants have shown negative perceptions about poverty. They strongly felt bad about each photograph that they took and what these images (...)

  7. Foucault and Beyond: From Sovereignty Power to Contemporary Biopolitics.Hazel Marie M. Vitales - 2020 - Mabini Review 9:161-178.
In this paper, I will provide an interpretation of Foucauldian theoretical understanding on natures of power from sovereign power to biopolitics. In order to give further depth and texture to what he means by biopolitics, I will attempt to connect biopolitics with his earlier work Discipline and Punish. The term ‘biopolitics’ was actually mentioned by Foucault on the last chapter of his History of Sexuality Volume 1: An Introduction, where he also claimed it as a technology of power linked to (...)
