Translator's introduction : At the end of July 2014 there was a week-long workshop held at the Ecole des Mines in Paris, Bruno Latour's former work-place. This was a final workshop, convened by Latour's project, An Inquiry into Modes of Existence, which was not only a book, but a website that was an experiment in interactive metaphysics that had been going on for four years. About 30 participants gathered to workshop and rewrite some key contested areas that had been challenged (...) on the site with discussions and counter-examples. One of the round tables working away during the week, occasionally with changes in personnel, was on Nature. Their job (like the other round tables on Politics, Diplomacy, Religion and Economics) was to ‘reboot’ or reinstitute a concept close to the heart of the Moderns. The assumption was that the traditional concept of nature, as developed through modern European history, would no longer be adequate to a future beset by environmental crises. The main people working on a draft were Didier Debaise, Pablo Jensen, Pierre Montebello, Nicolas Prignot, Isabelle Stengers and Aline Wiame. When they finished the draft, I translated it and it was presented, in French and English, in a final two-day public session at Science Po, to a group of seven international scholars designated as “chargés d'affaires,” or “diplomats from the future” whose job was to assess the results of our labours in terms of how they might be met by Gaia, the ur-representative of future planetary crises. L’extension inédite qu’opère Tarde de la notion de sujet à tous les aspects de la réalité trouve, selon nous, aujourd’hui une nouvelle actualité dans les articulations entre nature et subjectivités. Résumé La notion d’abstraction est au cœur de la pensée de Whitehead. Des formalismes logico-mathématiques au schème spéculatif, en passant par le statut des entités physiques et des formes esthétiques, la question des abstractions est l’une de celles qui animent la totalité de l’oeuvre de Whitehead. Pourtant, la question des abstractions est restée relativement peu traitée. Il faut dire que Whitehead n’a cessé de leur donner un statut particulier et pour le moins inhabituel. Elles sont, dans sa pensée, au coeur (...) de l’expérience sensible ; elles définissent les êtres dans leur constitution même ; elles forment une prise sur les mondes possibles qui accompagnent toute existence. After a few general remarks on the theoretical stakes of Simondon’s lexicological inventions, a lexicon is offered to help the reader enter fully into his philosophy. Résumé L’ambition de cet article est de proposer une lecture de l’œuvre de B. Latour en l’inscrivant dans un héritage que nous qualifierons de « néomonadologique ». La caractéristique principale d’une telle approche est qu’elle tente de dégager simultanément la question du sujet de toute anthropologie et la question de la nature de toute substantialité propre. C’est à une conception pluraliste de la nature, faite de niveaux de subjectivités – humaines et non-humaines –, qu’une telle philosophie en appelle.

Deleuze's text on dramatization has a peculiar place in his philosophy. In this text, he attributes, for the first time in his own name, a singular function to philosophy. I aim to show that all the notions developed in ‘The Method of Dramatization’ – such as the transformation of the status of Ideas, the first development of a theory of individuation, the decentring of subjectivity, the critique of representation – are part of one general function: to grant events the importance (...) they call for. If a method is required for such an endeavour, it is because thought must become the site of the maximal intensification of what – beyond a psychological or an anthropological point of view – is of importance. In this article, I claim that Stengers’ interpretation of Whitehead’s speculative philosophy is organized around the concept of “infection.” In focusing on this concept it becomes possible to link process concepts such as “societies,” “environment,” and “historical trajectories” in a real philosophy of life. I have analyzed the singularity of such a philosophy that Stengers calls a “culture of interstices” and its epistemological dimensions.

Pragmatism presents itself as a technical reflection upon experimentation. This technique takes two forms : the evaluation of the propositions, utterances, and ideas through their effects ; the construction and invention of new propositions in charge of accounting for experimentation as a continuous movement of changes and transformations. This article attempts to reclaim this technical approach and to build on its basis a reflection on power . La « vie » manifeste des qualités (nouveauté, innovation, continuité) qui semblent, au premier abord, échapper à toute conceptualisation. Procès et réalité en tente une interprétation technique, conceptuelle et systématique, qui n'est de l'ordre ni d'une philosophie de la nature, ni d'une anthropologie. In order to understand what a speculative approach of (...) life may be, one should redefine both a function and form of philosophy around the term « speculation ». The manifest qualities of « life » - novelty, innovation, continuity - seem, at first sight, to eschew all forms of conceptualization. Le livre de Jean-Luc Gouin se présente comme une introduction à la philosophie de Hegel. Il cherche à retrouver ce qu'il y a de vivant dans cette pensée, à retrouver les débats et les nécessités qui l'animent. L'ambition de l'ouvrage est de mettre en perspective ce qui, en deçà des différentes propositions ou domaines, constitue la pensée hégélienne, ce qui en est le véritable moteur, de «déceler une certaine structure mouvante dans l'ensemble de l'œuvre du penseur». Dès lors, il s'écarte (...) à la fois d'une recherche sur un domaine particulier, comme la conception hégélienne de l'État ou du Droit, et d'une présentation générale de l'œuvre. Il vise plutôt à s'installer dans le mouvement même de la pensée hégélienne, dans cet élément «vivant» qui structure et traverse l'ensemble des domaines. L'auteur revient à plusieurs reprises sur sa volonté de «présenter dialectiquement la dialectique. Mieux: hégéliennement l'hégélianisme». La dialectique a souvent été posée, à juste titre, comme cet élément du mouvement hégélien, comme ce qui traverse et donne sens à l'ensemble de l'œuvre. Mais il faut alors ajouter, pour J.-L. Gouin, que c'est à partir d'un ensemble de concepts que la dialectique peut jouer ce rôle et c'est donc plutôt à une «constellation», à une «structure» qu'il faut se référer. «Cette structure se cristallise autour de quatre notions fondamentales. Two books on Whitehead, a major study by the noted philosopher of science, Isabelle Stengers, and a shorter one by Didier Debaise are reviewed, along with two earlier mathematical and scientific works by Whitehead himself, which have been re-issued. This provides the basis for a wide-ranging discussion of the relationships between Whitehead's love of poetry and Heidegger's approach to it, Whitehead's background in mathematics and theoretical physics and his attitude to empirical science and more general problems of the (...) philosophy of the event, in particular how radical change can come about. Meteorology is not one of the most discussed topics in Paracelsus studies, although it is closely linked to both Paracelsus’ medicine and cosmology. Furthermore, it appears to be at the very core of Paracelsus’ famous matter theory of three chymical principles, mercury, sulphur and salt, known as the tria prima. By discussing prominent examples of Paracelsus’ explanations on how the tria prima operate within the stars, this article shows how the Swiss physician conceived meteorology within his own body of knowledge, (...) obviously constructed in opposition to the Aristotelian-scholastic tradition, how he based it on a peculiar interpretation of the Biblical creation story, and made it the proper laboratory of his chymical matter theory, applying it first systematically to the field of natural philosophy, especially to celestial phenomena, even before using it for his medical theory in his later writings. The aim of this work is to revisit the proposal made by Dag Westerståhl a decade ago when he provided a modern reading of the traditional square of opposition and of related structures. We propose a formalization of this modern view and contrast it with the classical one. We discuss what may be a modern hexagon of opposition and a modern cube, and show their interest in particular for relating quantitative expressions.

Avant même d'être condamné pour "contestation de crime contre l'humanité" au tournant du siècle, Roger Garaudy était déjà marginalisé dans les champs intellectuel et politique français. Après avoir incarné la résistance au néostalinisme dans le Parti communiste, le philosophe qui fut longtemps l'interlocuteur privilégié de Jean-Paul Sartre au sein du PCF en fut spectaculairement exclu en 1970 pour s'être opposé aux Soviétiques qui venaient d'écraser le Printemps de Prague. Celui que l'historiographie du communisme retient plus volontiers comme le "stalinien modèle", (...) qu'il fut en effet dans l'après-guerre, était pourtant devenu, malgré sa proximité avec Thorez, un critique de plus en plus affirmé du stalinisme après les révélations du XXe Congrès du Parti communiste de l'Union soviétique (PCUS) en 1956 et un acteur majeur de l'aggiornamento du PCF. Son combat pour rénover le communisme français et son goût précoce pour l'écologie et le dialogue des civilisations en firent quelque temps une figure respectée du progressisme français, mais celui qui répétait que le Socialisme était condamné s'il refusait de s'ouvrir à la "transcendance" vit son étoile pâlir après 1970 au point qu'il devint un intellectuel illégitime, celui que l'on condamne sans l'avoir lu.
