Traditional theism (in Christianity, Judaism and Islam) understands God as possessing certain attributes including omnipotence. God is omnipotent in the sense that God possesses unlimited (maximal) power. For some classical philosophers and theologians (PetrusDamiani, René Descartes) God’s omnipotence requires his being able to do absolutely anything, including the logically impossible. But in Thomas Aquinas’ opinion, to do what is logically impossible is not an act of power but is self-contradictory action. For Aquinas, a logically impossible action is not an action. (...) The contemporary British philosopher of religion, Richard Swinburne, considers omnipotence from an analytic perspective and, partially,within Aquinas’ tradition. For Swinburne, omnipotence includes the power to perform only logically possible and consistent tasks. In this paper, I discuss systematically (§§ 3-6) the philosophical and logical problems of omnipotence and the relation between God and logic from the perspective of Jan Łukasiewicz’s logical investigations. The article examines the concept of anti-irrationalism coined by the members of the Lvov-Warsaw School. The term “anti-irrationalism” comes from Ajdukiewicz, who used it to define the specificity of the School as a whole. For Ajdukiewicz, anti-irrationalism, which values cognition with intersubjective qualities, is contrasted with irrationalism. The article discusses Twardowski’s tripartite division of beliefs into rational, “irrational,” and “non-rational.” Against this background, the article explores Dąmbska’s view on irrationalism, which is divided by her into several subcategories.Finally, the author considers (...) the question of anti-irrationalism as a metaphilosophical standpoint in the context of the question of a worldview. Uwagi metodologiczne z Pascalem w dalszym tle Wedle autora tego artykułu, analityczna filozofia religii nie powinna być zamknięta dla innych sfer kultury i ignorować lub lekceważyć osiągnięć innych, zarówno przeszłych, jak i współczesnych prądów filozoficznych. Filozof analityczny, w tym analityczny filozof religii, może zatem szukać inspiracji również poza sferą filozofii analitycznej. Jednocześnie nie oznacza to, że filozof analityczny ma lekceważyć nauki przyrodnicze lub nie troszczyć się o precyzję języka i właściwe argumenty. Troska o precyzję językową i (...) stosowanie odpowiedniej argumentacji ma kluczowe znaczenie dla tożsamości filozofii analitycznej. The paper presents three essential meanings of the notion of „justice”: (1) justice as a feature of human acts, (2) justice as a feature of human beings, and (3) justice as a feature of the structure of distribution. The second part of the paper shows that justice as value may be in conflict with other values such as benevolence or honesty.

W dyskusji z tekstem poruszającym problemy semiotyczne (polisemia, nieostrość, zależność kontekstowa) omawiam i dyskutuję zarzuty kierowane pod adresem semiotyki jako narzędzia pozwalającego kształtować odpowiednie sprawności językowe, w kontekście postulatu krytycyzmu. Akceptuję opinie autorki tekstu o ograniczonych możliwościach w tym zakresie. W dyskusji z tekstami dotyczącymi filozofii religii bronię jej statusu jako uprawnionej subdyscypliny filozoficznej. Poddawane są także dyskusji szczegółowe kwestie z zakresu filozofii religii (m.in. problem wszechmocy). The standard model of rationality points to the following criteria of rationality: appropriate articulation, obeying the rules of logic, and proper justification. These criteria however cause troubles, when they are used in particular cases. In the article it is proposed two-level model of rationality. The first level would comprise four metaprinciples: linguistic exactness, obeying the rules of logic, criticism, and ability to solving the problems. The second level would refer to certain types of beliefs, building models for them.

The philosophical thought of Perelman is characterized with criticism of all philosophies seeking the first, unshakable and absolute principles. Such philosophies are trying to attain their aim among others through referring to obviousness. The trends of this kind are characteristic for classical rationalism (e.g. Cartesian philosophy). R. Descartes thinks that cognizance worthy of being called "knowledge" should be such cognizance, which is characterized with perfection and homogeneousness. Perelman rejects existence of absolute criteria and emphasizes that a cognizing mind is shaped (...) by the intellectual tradition and education. Philosophical cognizance is able to improve and change itself continually when it is supported by certain reasons. The Belgian philosopher's thought resembles, in many respects, the concepts of the so-called new rationalism (F. Gonseth, G. Bachelard, J. Piaget). Simultaneously, however, Perelman stresses the fact of irreducibility of philosophy to science as philosophical problems are characterized with constant contestability, controversial character, and openness to new solutions. Generally speaking, the philosophical thought in question may be called "antiabsolutist" and "pluralistic". (shrink)

Artykuł przedstawia dwudziestowieczne polskie dyskusje filozoficzne dotyczące racjonalności, w szczególności w kontekście poznawczym. Omawiane są stanowiska wielu uczonych, począwszy od Kazimierza Twardowskiego i założonej przezeń Szkoły Lwowsko-Warszawskiej do myślicieli okresu powojennego: Leszka Kołakowskiego i Mariana Przełęckiego. W części drugiej poddane są dyskusji i analizie trzy kwestie systematyczne, dotyczące racjonalności przekonań: problem ich binarności, kryteriów racjonalności oraz zagadnienie uzasadnienia jej wyboru.

Autor przedstawia i poddaje analizie, stworzoną przez Ch. Perelmana koncepcję logiki prawniczej. Rozpatrując ten problem autor odwołuje się do teoretycznego modelu stosowania prawa. Analizy Perelmana doprowadziły go, jak wiadomo, do wniosku, iż logika prawnicza odwołuje się nie tyle do technik formalnologicznych ile raczej do technik znanych z teorii argumentacji. Koncepcję tę uznać należy za antyformalistyczną, wiążącą się z przekonaniem, że błędne jest traktowanie logiki prawniczej jako zastosowania logiki ogólnej w domenie prawa. Stanowisko Perelmana poddane zostaje krytyce. Nie negując bowiem znaczenia (...) argumentacji, odrzucić należy pogląd kwestionujący użyteczność szeroko rozumianej logiki w sferze prawa. (shrink)

In this paper I discuss the problem of rationality of beliefs. The standard model of rationality proposes three conditions: 1) proper articulation, 2) respecting the requirements of logic , 3) sufficient justification. The second condition is usually understood as two requirements: one concerning consistency, the other suitable deductive abilities. This idea of logical rationality is idealised and not used in practice. For this reason the idealized conception should be reformulated. The conception of minimal logical rationality requires the fulfilment of some (...) conditions but it would not presuppose logical omniscience. (shrink)

The author presents an argument that the notion of rationality of beliefs must not be so restrictive as it is according to usual definitions. I.a. The postulate of effective elimination of all contradictory beliefs should be qithdrawn because nobody had the pssibility to derive and examine all the consequences of his beliefs. The final author's proposal is to enclose a kind of merely potential mechanism of elimination of contradictory beliefs into the notion concerned.

Le travail est consacré á la caractérisation de la théorie ď'argumentation créée par Perelman. Ce philosophe belge veut traitor la philosophie d’une façon ample, trouvant qu'elle doit aussi construire les principes de ľ'activité humaine, íl fáut que ces principes soient raisonnables et mútivés. Selon Perelman la logique contemporaine ne favorise pas сеs aspirations. Souvent elle est reduite à la logique formelle (A, Church, J. Bocheński), laissant en dehorn de ses intéréts ces moyens de raisonnemont qu’on applique a'laboration de la décision. (...) Perelman n'accepte pas ces conceptions, se reférant à Aristote. La théorie d ’argumentation proposée par lui, qu'on appelle rhétorique nouvelle, comprend ces techniques de raisonnement à l'aide desquelles on tend a faire accepter par l'auditoire donné la these présentée. Ces méthodes se trouvent à l'extérieur de la logique formelle et ne concement pas les situations dans les quelles on peut recourir a la vérification empirique. Elles sont langement appliquées dans les discussions philosophiques, morales, politiques et aussi juridiques. (shrink)

Znany w tradycji filozoficznej spór o uniwersalia, żywy zwłaszcza w okresie średniowiecza, ma aspekt teoriopoznawczy, ontologiczny i logiczny. Aktualny jest on także współcześnie, zaś pewne dociekania w zakresie filozofii matematyki nawiązują do klasycznych stanowisk, tj. realizmu, konceptualizmu i nominalizmu. Ważna płaszczyzna tego sporu wydaje się znajdować na gruncie wspólnym dla logiki i ontologii. Problematyka ta dyskutowana była w szkole lwowsko-warszawskiej m. in. przez Leśniewskiego, Kotarbińskiego i Ajdukiewicza. Leśniewski i Kotarbiński byli przy tym stanowczymi zwolennikami nominalizmu. Znajdujemy u nich dowody wykazujące, (...) ich zdaniem, że przyjęcie istnienia przedmiotów ogólnych (a więc uniwersaliów) prowadzi do sprzeczności. Tym argumentom nominalistów przeciwstawił się Ajdukiewicz. Wskazał on, iż spór o uniwersalia toczy się na gruncie języka naturalnego, który jest wieloznaczny. Aby rozpatrzyć to zagadnienie, należy więc dokonać precyzacji języka. Taka precyzacja możliwa jest jednak na kilku drogach, np. w stosunku do danego języka L mogą to być języki L1 …. Ln. Języki te mogą się od siebie różnić m.in. liczbą przyjmowanych kategorii semantycznych, jeśli się uzna na ich gruncie istnienie jednej lub dwu kategorii nazw (nazwy indywidualne i nazwy generalne). Tak więc okazuje się, iż na gruncie np. języka L1 pojęcie "universale" może prowadzić do sprzeczności, zaś na gruncie innego, np. L2, do sprzeczności prowadzić nie musi. Stąd też analiza logiczno-semantyczna, wbrew nominalistom, nie wyklucza innych stanowisk poza nominalizmom. (shrink)

Cooperation between doctors of various specialties and other medical specialists is the standard of care in the treatment of patients. Due to the variety of diseases and the dynamic development of medicine in general, it is difficult to be an expert in every field and know all the recommended treatments. An example of such cooperation is the joint treatment of patients with the problem of ingrown toenails. The article contains an analysis of patients who received treatment in a doctor’s office (...) in cooperation with podiatrists. A conservative approach towards the treatment of this condition sees the patient being initially diagnosed and treated by a podiatrist and then later, if necessary, being referred to a doctor for surgical treatment. The exchange of experiences and information on patients treated by interdisciplinary teams allows doctors and podiatrists to find the best possible treatment and improve the quality of life of patients. The follow-up of patients after surgery can be performed later in podiatry offices. Owing to modern electronic communication, it is possible for a doctor to constantly monitor the patient’s condition without the need for direct visits to the doctor’s office. (shrink)

The special links between money and history transcend that routine course of events with which are associated the great - majority of the works of mankind. It is rare to come across articles that since their initial manufacture have preserved their form almost intact for twenty-five centuries, and thus for almost the entire historical span of the civilized world, while playing an identical role in the lives of societies as diverse as those of Europe and the whole of Asia. It (...) is rare, furthermore, to find articles that are of such generalized use and interest, often even the source of common feelings. Finally, similar articles are rare, if they exist at all, which—as is the case with money—may be just as closely connected with the great currents of the political, economic and social history of entire nations and continents as with the personal fates of individuals and families: in other words, articles whose presence might equally well record the succession of epochs as the passage of days. The book has two currents. The first is an analysis of the three concepts of freedom, which are called, respectively, negative, positive, and inner. Negative freedom is defined as an absence of coercion, positive freedom as an ability to rule oneself and rule others, inner freedom as being oneself, that is, being an author of one's decisions. Each concept is analyzed both in terms of its development in the history of ideas and in terms of its internal logic. The major (...) problem of negative freedom is to find widely accepted rules according to which this freedom can be distributed. The major problem of positive freedom is to define what constitutes a free person. The major problem of inner freedom is how to correlate it with the proper interpretation of the human self. The book advances the thesis - and this constitutes the other current of its narrative - that we have been witnessing the advent of a new form of despotism, much of it being the effect of the dominant position of liberalism. Precisely because it took a reductionist position, liberalism has impoverished our view of freedom, and consequently, our notion of human nature with its political, moral, and metaphysical dimensions.
