    A Narrative Ethics of Care.Jens Erik Paulsen - 2011 - Health Care Analysis 19 (1):28-40.
If ethics of care deals with the nature of relationships, attentiveness, and understanding particular others, narrativity ought to play a central part. Sometimes, caring simply amounts to working with narratives. In the article I claim that narrativity can even be said to be native to an ethics of care. Through an example, I demonstrate how a narrative ethics of care can discern and grasp some moral problems better than the standard theoretical outlooks.

    A Values-based methodology in Policing.Jens Erik Paulsen - 2019 - Etikk I Praksis - Nordic Journal of Applied Ethics 1:21-38.
Professional work is currently based on explicit knowledge and evidence to a greater degree than in the past. Standardising professional services in this way requires repetitive scenarios and might be seen as a challenge to professional autonomy. In the context of policing, officers perform a range of familiar tasks, but they may also encounter novel challenges at any moment. Moreover, police tasks are not well-defined. Therefore, many missions require police officers to rely on common sense, tacit knowledge or gut feeling. (...)

Hvilke moralske utfordringer opplever norske politistudenter i praksisåret?Jens Erik Paulsen & Lisa Maria Enoksen - 2017 - Etikk I Praksis - Nordic Journal of Applied Ethics 2 (2):95-110.
I denne studien undersøkes hvilke moralske utfordringer norske politistudenter oftest møter i «praksisåret». Nøkkelord: etikk, yrkesetikk, anvendt etikk, politi, utdanning English summary: (...)

Data identity: privacy and the construction of self.Jens-Erik Mai & Sille Obelitz Søe - 2022 - Synthese 200 (6):1-22.
This paper argues in favor of a hybrid conception of identity. A common conception of identity in datafied society is a split between a digital self and a real self, which has resulted in concepts such as the data double, algorithmic identity, and data shadows. These data-identity metaphors have played a significant role in the conception of informational privacy as control over information—the control of or restricted access to your digital identity. Through analyses of various data-identity metaphors as well as (...)

Personal information as communicative acts.Jens-Erik Mai - 2016 - Ethics and Information Technology 18 (1):51-57.
The paper extends previous accounts of informational privacy as a contextual notion. Where previous accounts have focused on interpretations of the privacy context itself as being contextual and open for negotiation and interpretation, this paper extends those analyses and shows that personal information itself is in fact best understood as contextual and situational—and as such open for interpretation. The paper reviews the notion of information as it has been applied in informational privacy and philosophy of information, and suggests that personal (...)

The first part of the paper traces the history of the relationship between logic and linguistics with particular emphasis on the contributions of Tarski and Ajdukiewicz. In the second part we give a brief review of current work on formal semantics for natural language systems and argue for the need for a richer geometric structure on the semantic model space.

On What There is—Infinitesimals and the Nature of Numbers.Jens Erik Fenstad - 2015 - Inquiry: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Philosophy 58 (1):57-79.
This essay will be divided into three parts. In the first part, we discuss the case of infintesimals seen as a bridge between the discrete and the continuous. This leads in the second part to a discussion of the nature of numbers. In the last part, we follow up with some observations on the obvious applicability of mathematics.

Structures and Algorithms: Mathematics and the Nature of Knowledge.Jens Erik Fenstad - 2018 - Cham: Springer Verlag.
This book explains exactly what human knowledge is. The key concepts in this book are structures and algorithms, i.e., what the readers “see” and how they make use of what they see. Thus in comparison with some other books on the philosophy of science, which employ a syntactic approach, the author’s approach is model theoretic or structural. Properly understood, it extends the current art and science of mathematical modeling to all fields of knowledge. The link between structure and algorithms is (...)

What is the ‘personal’ in ‘personal information’?Sille Obelitz Søe, Rikke Frank Jørgensen & Jens-Erik Mai - 2021 - Ethics and Information Technology 23 (4):625-633.
Contemporary privacy theories and European discussions about data protection employ the notion of ‘personal information’ to designate their areas of concern. The notion of personal information is demarcated from non-personal information—or just information—indicating that we are dealing with a specific kind of information. However, within privacy scholarship the notion of personal information appears undertheorized, rendering the concept somewhat unclear. We argue that in an age of datafication, protection of personal information and privacy is crucial, making the understanding of what is (...)

There have been several calls from LIS researchers for practical or applied research not to ignore the epistemological assumptions underlying the systems and artifacts they design lest they showcase only the dominant theory at a given time. Others have also deplored the "epistemological promiscuity" or "eclecticism" of the field, its incessant borrowing of theories and models from elsewhere and the fact that the field has largely neglected the contributions that philosophy and epistemology could have made in its research. This problem (...)

In this paper, we put forward two novel arguments against the counterfactual comparative account (CCA) of harm and benefit. In both arguments, the central theme is that CCA conflicts with plausible judgements about benefit and prudence.
