The Foundation of Physicianship.Abraham Fuks, James Brawer & J. Donald Boudreau - 2012 - Perspectives in Biology and Medicine 55 (1):114-126.
The practice of medicine involves continual change, driven by a constant stream of developments in the understanding of biological structure and function relevant to human diseases, and the parallel improvements in pharmacologic and other technological interventions. This change is also driven by evolving social philosophies, ethical trends, and lifestyles. As products of society, doctors absorb contemporary values and norms. Indeed, it would appear that the ethical norms and standards of medical practice are flexible, and that the characteristics of medical practice (...)

George Engel's Epistemology of Clinical Practice.Michael Saraga, Abraham Fuks & J. Donald Boudreau - 2014 - Perspectives in Biology and Medicine 57 (4):482-494.
This article is intended to revive, through a critical reinterpretation, the bio-psychosocial model of George Engel. Engel’s first description in 1977, was very broad, encompassing too many aspects of medicine. In his later work, he focused his model as an epistemology for clinical medicine. However, what medicine mostly retained were minor aspects of the 1977 article, namely a multi-factorial approach to the etiology of diseases and a call to complement biomedicine with a psychosocial concern in order to re-humanize medicine. We (...)

    Transcendence. [REVIEW]B. L. J. - 1970 - Review of Metaphysics 24 (1):147-148.
This is an engaging book on a subject which most people in our culture assume went out of fashion long ago. The book had its genesis in one of a series of symposia convened by the Church Society for College Work of Cambridge to explore certain themes and ideas which have great import for our time. The various authors of the essays eschew the habit of viewing Transcendence as the traditional content of metaphysical arguments or revelatory statements about the nature (...)

Semantics: An Interdisciplinary Reader in Philosophy, Linguistics, and Psychology. [REVIEW]L. J. - 1972 - Review of Metaphysics 26 (1):175-177.
This collection, with an agreeable proportion of new material and a sensible selection of old, is worth the money and ought to be on the shelf of anyone interested in recent work on language by philosophers, psychologists, and linguists. The section by linguists proper is the longer and more up to date but this seems quite in order: today neither work in philosophy nor psychology can provide a plausible center-of-attention that will take in the other and linguistics as flanking material. (...)

    A Priori Probability and Localized Observers.Matthew J. Donald - 1992 - Foundations of Physics 22 (9):1111-1172.
A physical and mathematical framework for the analysis of probabilities in quantum theory is proposed and developed. One purpose is to surmount the problem, crucial to any reconciliation between quantum theory and space-time physics, of requiring instantaneous “wave-packet collapse” across the entire universe. The physical starting point is the idea of an observer as an entity, localized in space-time, for whom any physical system can be described at any moment, by a set of (not necessarily pure) quantum states compatible with (...)

    A Mathematical Characterization of the Physical Structure of Observers.Matthew J. Donald - 1995 - Foundations of Physics 25 (4):529-571.
It is proposed that the physical structure of an observer in quantum mechanics is constituted by a pattern of elementary localized switching events. A key preliminary step in giving mathematical expression to this proposal is the introduction of an equivalence relation on sequences of spacetime sets which relates a sequence to any other sequence to which it can be deformed without change of causal arrangement. This allows an individual observer to be associated with a finite structure. The identification of suitable (...)

On Many-Minds Interpretations of Quantum Theory.Matthew J. Donald - unknown
This paper is a response to some recent discussions of many-minds interpretations in the philosophical literature. After an introduction to the many-minds idea, the complexity of quantum states for macroscopic objects is stressed. Then it is proposed that a characterization of the physical structure of observers is a proper goal for physical theory. It is argued that an observer cannot be defined merely by the instantaneous structure of a brain, but that the history of the brain's functioning must also be (...)

  16. Neural Unpredictability, the Interpretation of Quantum Theory, and the Mind-Body Problem.Matthew J. Donald - 2002 - Quant-Ph/0208033.
It has been suggested, on the one hand, that quantum states are just states of knowledge; and, on the other, that quantum theory is merely a theory of correlations. These suggestions are confronted with problems about the nature of psycho-physical parallelism and about how we could define probabilities for our individual future observations given our individual present and previous observations. The complexity of the problems is underlined by arguments that unpredictability in ordinary everyday neural functioning, ultimately stemming from small-scale uncertainties (...)

    The Scientist’s Education and a Civic Conscience.Kelling J. Donald & Jeffrey Kovac - 2013 - Science and Engineering Ethics 19 (3):1229-1240.
A civic science curriculum is advocated. We discuss practical mechanisms for (and highlight the possible benefits of) addressing the relationship between scientific knowledge and civic responsibility coextensively with rigorous scientific content. As a strategy, we suggest an in-course treatment of well known (and relevant) historical and contemporary controversies among scientists over science policy or the use of sciences. The scientific content of the course is used to understand the controversy and to inform the debate while allowing students to see the (...)

An Empirical and Philosophical Exploration of Clinical Practice.Michael Saraga, Donald Boudreau & Abraham Fuks - 2019 - Philosophy, Ethics, and Humanities in Medicine 14 (1):3.
BackgroundPrevious empirical work among physicians has led us to propose that clinical practice is experienced by clinicians as an engagement-in-the-clinical-situation. In this study, we pursue our exploration of clinical practice ‘on its own terms’ by turning to the experience of patients.MethodsPhenomenological analysis of in-depth individual interviews with 8 patients.ResultsWe describe the patient experience as a set of three motifs: the shock on the realization of the illness, the chaos of the health care environment, and the anchor point provided by an (...)

  21. A Proof of Everett's Correlation Conjecture.Matthew J. Donald - unknown
In his long 1957 paper, “The Theory of the Universal Wave Function”, Hugh Everett III made some significant preliminary steps towards the application and generalization of Shannon’s information theory to quantum mechanics. In the course of doing so, he conjectured that, for a given wavefunction on a compound space, the Schmidt decomposition maximises the correlation between subsystem bases. This is proved here.

  22. Probabilities for Observing Mixed Quantum States Given Limited Prior Information.Matthew J. Donald - unknown
The original development of the formalism of quantum mechanics involved the study of isolated quantum systems in pure states. Such systems fail to capture important aspects of the warm, wet, and noisy physical world which can better be modelled by quantum statistical mechanics and local quantum field theory using mixed states of continuous systems. In this context, we need to be able to compute quantum probabilities given only partial information. Specifically, suppose that B is a set of operators. This set (...)

The Denier-in-Chief: Climate Change, Science and the Election of Donald J. Trump.François Gemenne & Kari Pryck - 2017 - Law and Critique 28 (2):119-126.
The election of Donald J. Trump as the 45th President of the United States reminded us that climate deniers are anything but endangered species. In this short paper, we discuss President Trump’s position on climate change in the wider context of climate controversies and denial. In particular, we put it into perspective with other notorious contrarian leaders and their influence on national and international climate politics. Finally, we provide a brief analysis of President Trump discourses on climate change and (...)
