Leere und Langeweile, die Erfahrungen des Leids und des Bosen sind seit der Antike als Quellen fur den Nihilismus gesehen worden. Im 20. Jahrhundert haben weltweite politische Katastrophen und die damit verbundenen geistigen Zusammenbruche den Nihilismus zu einem teils verborgenen, teils entfesselten Massenphanomen, ja zu einem Menschheitsproblem werden lassen. Was aber konnen wir moralischer Indifferenz und geistiger Haltlosigkeit entgegensetzen? Welche Weisen von Sinnbehauptung, Sinnvermittlung und Sinnstiftung weisen eine menschliche Gemeinschaft als Sinngemeinschaft aus? Die historische Aufklärung hat eine Reihe ihrer wichtigsten Leitgedanken im Feld der Praktischen Philosophie entwickelt. Aus der Orientierung an der Praxis erwuchsen Veränderungen, die das überkommene System der Wissenschaften und das Gefüge der gesellschaftlichen Institutionen ebenso betrafen wie die Formen der Kommunikation und nicht zuletzt die Regeln der individuellen Lebensführung. Der vorliegende Band versucht im Ausgang von Einzelanalysen und aus der Eigenperspektive der Epoche wichtige Grundzüge des denkgeschichtlichen und kulturellen Wandels zu beschreiben, um der Frage nach den Wirkungen der aufklärerischen (...) Humphreys and Forde conceptualize object representations as structural descriptions, without discussing the implications of structural description models. We argue that structural description models entail two major assumptions – a part-structure assumption and an invariance assumption. The invariance assumption is highly problematic because it contradicts a large body of findings which indicate that recognition performance depends on orientation and size. We will delineate relevant findings and outline an alternative conception.

The target article fails to disentangle the functional description from the structural description of the two somatosensory streams. Additional evidence and thorough reconsideration of the evidence cited argue for a functional distinction between the how processing and the what processing of somatosensory information, while questioning the validity and usefulness of the equation of these two types of processing with structural streams. We propose going one step further: to investigate how the distinct functional streams are coordinated via attention.

La recherche sur Porigine du concept moderne de la critique au 18 c s. ne s'est orientée jusqu'à maintenant que sur l'histoire du mot « critique » . Elle doit cependant s'intéresser également aux développements historiques qui n'ont plus aujourd'hui d'effet immédiat ou qui ne sont pas reconnaissables à première vue. Le programme du doute raisonnable et de l'éclectisme véritable en font par exemple partie.

En Allemagne, Christian Thomasius a été le premier à développer un point de départ pour un programme de critique rationelle et émancipatole, une critique ébauchée dans le cadre d'un espoir dans une réforme universelle, tant intellectuelle que morale. Néanmoins, c'était Thomasius lui-même à être contraint de se rendre compte des limites d'une réforme fondamentale, et c'était pour cette raison qu'il (...) aboutit à en tirer des conséquences sceptiques. Diese klare und umfassende Studie zur deutschen Aufklärungsphilosophie ist zugleich die Darstellung einer Epoche und ihres Selbstverständnisses. Dabei wird klar: Aufklärung ist keine Aufgabe, der man sich stellen kann oder auch nicht; sondern Aufklärung ist das Grundthema des Denkens.

Cowan defines a chunk as “a collection of concepts that have strong associations to one another and much weaker associations to other chunks currently in use.” This definition does not impose any constraints on the nature and number of elements that can be bound into a chunk. We present an experiment to demonstrate that such limitations exist for visual short-term memory, and that their analysis may lead to important insights into properties of visual memory.

The philosophy of Descartes is the classical example of a Philosophy as a System intending to found itself on an absolute point of view or to come from an absolute starting point. However, the Cogito being regarded by Descartes as the first principle, actually is neither a first nor a definite nor a sufficient principle, leading to further conclusions. Above all Descartes himself, thus becoming the first Anti-Cartesian, compromises this so-called first and greatest evidence by stating that God ist the (...) most evident principle, from which everything has to be deduced. Our 'view' of great philosophers is very often determined by the iconographical tradition. Thus our view of the person Descartes is based, not least, on the well-known portrait in the Louvre in Paris, presumably a copy of a Frans-Hals painting, that shows a rather grim and disdainful Descartes. This view is contrasted here with portraits from Groningen and Copenhagen , which are almost unknown among philosophers and which present us with a rather mellow and affable Descartes. L'étude part du fait que l'harmonie est un concept-clé de la philosophie leibnizienne. Elle montre que et comment l'harmonie préétablie est subordonnée temporellement et matériellement à l'harmonie universelle. Par là il devient clair que l'harmonie pour Leibniz est, entre autre, un principe éthique, esthétique, théologique et onoséologique et enfin, cependant, un principe ontologique global. L'harmonie se révèle comme l'a priori absolu de tout être et de toute pensée.
