Il s'agit de l'idée que les connaissances a priori existent, certes, mais que leur découverte, ou la conscience que nous en avons, est a posteriori, et par conséquent de nature psychologico-empirique. It is about the idea knowledge a priori exists, of course, but that its discovery, or the consciousness which we have of it, is a posteriori, and consequently of psychologico-empirical nature. Selon une accusation lancée par Mendelssohn en 1785, Kant est souvent considéré comme le brise-tout (Alleszermalmer) de la métaphysique. Les textes permettent de montrer qu'une telle attitude était étrangère à Kant, et qu'il projetait en réalité une réforme et une renaissance de la métaphysique. A cet effet, il s'est servi d'une argumentation qui, outre ses aspects originaux, plonge aussi ses racines dans une stratégie que Baumgarten, puis son disciple Georg Friedrich Meier, avaient déjà déployée contre l'attitude antimétaphysique. Gemäss Mendelssohns Anklage (...) von 1785 wird Kant oft als ein Alleszermalmer, als der Zermalmer der Metaphysik, betrachtet. Die Texte belegen jedoch, dass Kant keine derartige Absicht hegte, und dass er in Wirklichkeit die Metaphysik einer Reform unterziehen wollte. Dazu bediente er sich einer Argumentation, die ausser ihren originellen Aspekten auch in einer Strategie wurzelt, die schon von Baumgarten und seinem Schüler Georg Friedrich Meier gegen die antimetaphysische Haltung durchgeführt wurde. This contribution first proposes to link the transcendental deduction to the problematic function of the understanding, and the transcendental schematism to the assertoric function of the faculty of judgment. Then it deals with classical objections against the irrelevance of schematism and the doctrine of subsumption, and concludes that the universal character of the transcendental scheme is not the same as the universal character of the concept (which lies in the extension, hence in a relation of subordination), but results necessarily from (...) a synthesis of representations in the pure "a priori" imagination (relation of coordination). In this classic analysis, Leo Strauss pinpoints what is original and innovative in the political philosophy of Thomas Hobbes.

Recent feminist philosophy of language has highlighted the ways that the speech of women can be unjustly impeded, because of the way their gender affects the uptake their speech receives. In this chapter, I explore how similar processes can undermine the speech of a different sort of speaker: Indigenous communities. This involves focusing on Indigeneity rather than gender as the salient social identity, and looking at the ways that group speech, rather than only individual speech, can be unjustly impeded. To (...) do this, I make use of the notion of ‘discursive injustice’ that has been developed by Quill Kukla, and, with reference to three case studies, show how discursive injustice can effectively derail the speech of Indigenous communities. The far reaching changes in man's social and personal life taking place in our lifetime underline the need for a sound ethical evaluation of our rights and duties and of human behaviour both on the individual level and in the political society. On many issues judgments of value vary widely and a consultation of the thought of Thomas Aquinas on the basic questions will be helpful, the more since he is not only one of the greatest philosophers but also succeeded (...) in integrating in his moral philosophy the wisdom of the ancients, in particular of Aristotle and the Stoa. This book presents Aquinas's thought on such central questions as man's happiness, how to determine the morality of our actions, the natural law and the main virtues, as well as on the common good, war, human labour, love and friendship. Michael Gilbert’s multi-modal theory of argument challenges earlier accounts of arguing assumed in formal and informal logic. His account of emotional, visceral, and kisceral modes of arguing rejects the assumption that all arguments must be treated as instances of one “logical mode.” This paper compares his alternative modes to other modes proposed by those who have argued for visual, auditory, and other “multimodal” modes of arguing. I conclude that multi-modal and multimodal (without the hyphen) modes are complementary. In the summer of 1886, shortly before his fifty-eighth birthday, Leo Tolstoy was seriously injured while working in the fields of his estate. Bedridden for over two months, Tolstoy began writing a meditation on death and dying that soon developed into a philosophical treatise on life, death, love, and the overcoming of pessimism. Although begun as an account of how one man encounters and laments his death and makes this death his own, the final work, On Life, describes the optimal (...) life in which we can all be happy despite our mortality. After its completion, On Life was suppressed by the tsars, attacked by the hierarchs of the Russian Orthodox Church, and then censored by the Stalinist regime. This critical edition is the first accurate translation of this unsung classic of Russian thought into English, based on a study of manuscript pages of Tolstoy's drafts, and the first scholarly edition of this work in any language. It includes a detailed introduction and annotations, as well as historical material, such as early drafts, documents related to the presentation of an early version at the Moscow Psychological Society, and responses to the work by philosophers, religious leaders, journalists, and ordinary readers of Tolstoy's day.
