On the existential link of catastrophe and tragedy.Victor G. Rivas López - forthcoming - Filosofia Revista da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto.
The main thesis of this dissertation is set out in its very title, and to prove it will be necessary to eliminate the usual negative or melodramatic meaning of the two concepts that appear there and take them rather as the two extremes of the dialectical process of redefining the sociopersonal consciousness. In accordance with this, any catastrophe implies the violent breakup of the normal conditions of existence due to a natural or human factor whose direct consequences each one must (...)

Ethics review of big data research: What should stay and what should be reformed?Effy Vayena, Minerva Rivas Velarde, Mahsa Shabani, Gabrielle Samuel, Camille Nebeker, S. BackgroundEthics review is the process of assessing the ethics of research involving humans. The Ethics Review Committee (ERC) is the key oversight mechanism designated to ensure ethics review. Whether or not this governance mechanism is still fit for purpose in the data-driven research context remains a debated issue among research ethics experts.Main textIn this article, we seek to address this issue in a twofold manner. First, we review the strengths and weaknesses of ERCs in ensuring ethical oversight. Second, we map (...)

Placebo treatment is effective differently in different diseases — but is it also harmless? A brief synopsis.Prof Dr Thomas R. Weihrauch - 2004 - Science and Engineering Ethics 10 (1):151-155.
The placebo drug reactions from controlled trials were studied for the first time systematically for efficacy and the safety in drug data pooled from randomized, placebo-controlled, multicentre studies. Results: The efficacy of placebo on clinical symptoms and outcome varied between the therapeutic indications. However, no placebo effects on laboratory values, as e.g. blood glucose or Hb1c in diabetics, were noted. The frequency and type of placebo-induced adverse reactions also varied between indication groups. The placebo side effect profile was largely similar (...)

    Responsible conduct in research.Prof Dr P. J. D. Drenth - 2006 - Science and Engineering Ethics 12 (1):13-21.
Science is not taken for granted any longer. Society, politics and the media pose critical questions tending to censorship or at least control of science. How does science respond? It cannot exist and develop without freedom, but this does not mean freedom to amass knowledge and apply technological applications at any price and without restrictions. Science should be autonomous, but is not value-free. A distintion is made between external and internal social/ethical problems. The former refer to questions of the social/ethical (...)

Form, matter and nominalism (or what is in a name): comments on Robert Pasnau's "Metaphysical Themes".Calvin G. Normore - 2014 - Philosophical Studies 171 (1):27-35.
Prof. Pasnau’s remarkable book offers an exciting integration of medieval and early modern philosophy. It begins, however, in mediis rebus and so downplays the role that a particularly Nominalist tradition plays in explaining the abandonment of substantial form rise of the mechanical philosophy. This paper attempts to sketch some of that role.

Thoughts About Things: Aquinas, Buridan and Late Medieval Nominalism.Calvin G. Normore - 2023 - In Joshua P. Hochschild, Turner C. Nevitt, Adam Wood & Gábor Borbély (eds.), Metaphysics Through Semantics: The Philosophical Recovery of the Medieval Mind / Essays in Honor of Gyula Klima. Springer Verlag. pp. 221-235.
Gyula Klima has argued that the disagreements between Nominalists and Realists in the middle ages, as exemplified in the views of John Buridan and Thomas Aquinas, centered less in semantics and metaphysics than in epistemology and philosophy of mind. This paper suggests that in the light of Prof. Klima’s arguments, the disagreements in these areas cannot easily be separated and raise a number of issues that remain of philosophical importance.

    Comentario a “la relazione originaria” de Claudio ciancio.Alejandro G. Vigo - 2012 - Giornale di Metafisica 1.
The present contribution comments Prof. Ciancio´s conception on the relationship between freedom and being, understood as the ontologically originary relation, and tries out an interpretation of some of its main thesis, taking also into account the methodical aspects. Finally, suggest a possible convergency way with phenomenological approaches, which chose the methodological priority of a way leading to the principles, ratherof a way departing from them.

    The Professiones of the Heraclean Table.E. G. Hardy - 1917 - Classical Quarterly 11 (01):27-.
In an interesting article in the Journal of Roman Studies Prof. Jefferson Elmore reopens the vexed question as to the nature and object of the ‘declarations’ provided for in lines 1 to 19 of the Heraclean Table, and claims to have discovered a fresh clue more satisfactory than any so far propounded. As I have recently committed myself in opposition to the hypotheses of Hirschfeld, Legras and Nap, to what is at least a partial reaffirmation of Mommsen's explanation, and (...)

After severe brain injury, one of the key challenges for medical doctors is to determine the patient’s prognosis. Who will do well? Who will not do well? Physicians need to know this, and families need to do this too, to address choices regarding the continuation of life supporting therapies. However, current prognostication methods are insufficient to provide a reliable prognosis. -/- Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) holds considerable promise for improving the accuracy of prognosis in acute brain injury patients. Nonetheless, (...)
