The Automatic Activation of Emotion Words Measured Using the Emotional Face-Word Stroop Task in Late ChineseEnglish Bilinguals.Lin Fan, Qiang Xu, Xiaoxi Wang, Fei Xu, Yaping Yang & Zhi Lu - 2018 - Cognition and Emotion 32 (2):315-324.
In the current study, late ChineseEnglish bilinguals performed a facial expression identification task with emotion words in the task-irrelevant dimension, in either their first language or (...) second language. The investigation examined the automatic access of the emotional content in words appearing in more than one language. Significant congruency effects were present for both L1 and L2 emotion word processing. Furthermore, the magnitude of emotional face-word Stroop effect in the L1 task was greater as compared to the L2 task, indicating that in L1 participants could access the emotional information in words in a more reliable manner. In summary, these findings provide more support for the automatic access of emotional information in words in the bilingualstwo languages as well as attenuated emotionality of L2 processing. (shrink)

Early Menarche and its Relationship to Paternal Migrant Work Among Middle-School-Aged Students in China.Bingzheng Zhang, Ting Yu, Qiuxing Chen, Kaye Wellings, Theresa M. Oniffrey, Junrui Ma, Limin Huang, Suiqiong Fan, Lu Ma, Rui Li & Yuliang Zou - 2020 - Journal of Biosocial Science 52 (1):108-116.
Associations have been shown between fathers absence and menarcheal age, but most studies have focused on absence resulting from divorce, abandonment or death. Little research has (...)been conducted to evaluate the effect on menarcheal age of paternal absence through migrant work. In a sample of 400 middle school students, this study examined the association between paternal migrant work and menarcheal age against a backdrop of extensive rural-to-urban migration in China. Data were collected through a self-reported questionnaire, including social-demographic characteristics, aspects of family relationships, information about fathers migrant work and age at menarche. After adjusting for BMI, parent marital status and perceived relationship with mother, lower self-perceived quality of fatherdaughter relationship and lower frequency of contact with the father were associated with higher odds for early menarche. These findings suggest that the assumption that fathers absence for work influences the timing of menarche needs to be examined in the context of the quality of the fatherdaughter relationship and paternal care, which appear to play a critical role in the timing of menarche. These findings also emphasize the importance of enhancing paternal involvement and improving fatherdaughter relationships in the development of appropriate reproductive strategy in daughters. Seismic Sedimentology of Sand-Gravel Bodies on the Steep Slope of Rift BasinsA Case Study of the Shahejie Formation, Dongying Sag, Eastern China.Xiaomin Zhu, Rong Pan, Shunli Li, Hongbao Wang, Xin Zhang, Jiawang Ge & Zhiyong Lu - 2018 - Interpretation: SEG 6 (2):SD13-SD27.
A variety of genetic types of reservoirs with good hydrocarbon accumulation conditions have been developed in petroliferous rift basins. The near-provenance, coarse-grained depositional system on the (...) steep slopes of rift basins has become an important oil and gas exploration area. However, due to the large changes in lithologies and difficulties in its identification and characterization, the challenges in oil/gas exploration are significant. Seismic sedimentology, in this case, provides an effective means of identifying and characterizing the complex, coarse-grained sediments. We use a large number of cores, logs, and seismic data and establish the third- and fourth-order sequence frameworks in the Shahejie Formation on the steep slope of the northern Dongying Sag in eastern China. Three types of lithofacies, including conglomerates, sandstones, and mudstones with 12 subspecies facies types have been identified and the relationship between different lithofacies types and depositional systems is determined. The relative changes of the lake level control the distribution of depositional systems in a sequence framework. Lowstand system tracts of SQ3 and SQ4 in the Shahejie Formation mainly developed near-shore subaqueous fans and a small number of slump turbidite fans. Small-scale offshore fans mainly develop in lacustrine transgressive systems tracts, and fan deltas, flood-type sublake fans, slump turbidite fans, and near-shore subaqueous fans mainly developed in highstand systems tracts. The study of seismic sedimentology, based on the theory of seismic lithology and seismic geomorphology, have been carried out. Stratal slices are used to identify and characterize the morphology and temporal-spatial distributions of various types of sand-gravel bodies on the steep slopes of the Dongying Sag based on core calibration and establish the model of seismic sedimentology for various types of sand-gravel bodies in different systems tracts. Source-to-Sink System and its Sedimentary Records in the Continental Rift Basins: An Example From the Paleogene in the Bohai Sea Area, China.Changgui Xu, Xiaofeng Du, Hongtao Zhu, Donghui Jia, Wei Xu & Huan Lu - 2017 - Interpretation: SEG 5 (4):ST35-ST51.
Thesource-to-sinkconcept originated in the study of global change and atmospheric pollution. In recent years, the concept of a source-to-sink system has been (...)widely applied in continental margin sedimentary analysis. In our research, the idea of source-to-sink is applied to the continental rift basin sedimentary system in the Bohai Sea area. The idea emphasizes that the sedimentation dynamics, including erosion, transportation, and accumulation, are considered as a complete source-to-sink system. The sand-rich region often corresponds to a source-to-sink coupling system in a complex continental rift basin, which includes the effective provenance, high-efficiency routing system, and base-level transition. In addition, the effective provenance can be subdivided into explicit and implicit provenance systems in which the implicit provenance system has been shown to be a significant advancement in reservoir prediction for the Bohai Sea area, the sediment-transport pathways and slope-break zone constitute the routing systems, and the base-level transition is one of the allogenic factors that controls the position of the sandstone distribution in a sequence. Based on a large number of previous studies and different characteristics of sequence-stratigraphic models in the Bohai Sea area, we have evaluated three types of source-to-sink systems, including the fault-steep slope, strike-slip fault slope, and gentle slope pattern. In addition, the fault-steep-slope source-to-sink coupling system can be further subdivided into four types, namely, the corner, relay ramps, fault-throw diminishment-type, and valley-type source-to-sink systems. The source-to-sink system of the gentle slope pattern includes the uplift axis valley-type source-to-sink system and the slope-valley-type source-to-sink system. A small-scale, thick layer of fan delta is formed in the fault-steep-slope zone. A continuous braided river delta is formed in the strike-slip fault slope zone. A large-scale, thin layer of braided river delta is formed in the gentle slope zone. The characteristics of source-to-sink systems in continental rift basins are established for the exploration or prediction of favorable zones in the study area, as well as in similar basins. (shrink)

    Liberal Culturalism and the National Minority/Immigrant Dichotomy.Catherine Lu - 2015 - Les ateliers de l'éthique/The Ethics Forum 10 (2):169-173.
Catherine Lu | : Is the discrepancy between the cultural and linguistic rights of immigrants on the one hand and national groups on the other justified, with the (...)latter group typically enjoying a fuller set of such rights than the former category? Patten presents a case for accepting some modest departures from neutrality in the treatment of immigrantscultural rights and that of majority and minority national groups. I challenge his thesis by asking whether such departures are justified with respect to already settled immigrants; whether the situational argument for unequal treatment is inconsistent with the theory of culture offered earlier in the book; and whether contexts of historical injustice against immigrant groups might complicate judgements about the national minority/immigrant dichotomy with respect to minority cultural rights. Moral Philosophy, Materialism, and Consumer Ethics: An Exploratory Study in Indonesia[REVIEW]Long-Chuan Lu & Chia-Ju Lu - 2010 - Journal of Business Ethics 94 (2):193 - 210.
Although the ethical judgment of consumers in the United States and other industrialized countries has received considerable attention, consumer ethics in Asian-market settings have seldom been (...)explored. The purchase and making of counterfeit products are considered common, but disreputable, attributes of Southeast Asian consumers. According to the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN), Indonesia ranks third among the leading countries of counterfeit items in Asia. Retail revenue losses attributed to counterfeiting amounted to US $183 million in 2004. Therefore, elucidating the ethical perspectives of Indonesian consumers is an effective means of clarifying an important cultural influence on consumer behavior. This exploratory study of 230 Indonesians has many meaningful findings. First, certain personal attitudes apparently affect the ethical judgments of Indonesian consumers. Second, Indonesian consumers who exhibited high ethical concern over actively benefiting from illegal actions had high levels of materialism and idealism, as well as low levels of relativism. Third, materialism, idealism, and relativism significantly influenced whether benefits were created from actively engaging in some questionable activities (DELEGAL). Analytical results indicated that Indonesians with high materialism and relativism were more likely to engage in actions that were questionable but legal. Finally, consumer ethics were compared by applying demographic variables such as gender, age, education, religion, and occupation, indicating that all variables significantly varied except for religion.
