Observation of V-Type Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in a Sodium Atomic Beam.George R. Welch, G. G. Padmabandu, Edward S. Fry, Mikhail D. Lukin, Dmitri E. Nikonov, Frank Sander, Marlan O. Scully, Antoin Weis & Frank K. Tittel - 1998 - Foundations of Physics 28 (4):621-638.
We have conducted an experimental study of V-type electromagnetically induced transparency in sodium. Its principles are elucidated by a simple model. Measurements show decreased fluorescence and absorption depending on the detuning of the driving and probe fields, which is in agreement with the results of numerical simulation.

Kollokationsforschung und Kollokationsdidaktik.Peter Ďurčo (ed.) - 2016 - Wien: Lit.

    On successors of Jónsson cardinals.J. Vickers & P. D. Welch - 2000 - Archive for Mathematical Logic 39 (6):465-473.
We show that, like singular cardinals, and weakly compact cardinals, Jensen's core model K for measures of order zero [4] calculates correctly the successors of Jónsson cardinals, assuming $O^{Sword}$ does not exist. Namely, if $\kappa$ is a Jónsson cardinal then $\kappa^+ = \kappa^{+K}$ , provided that there is no non-trivial elementary embedding $j:K \longrightarrow K$ . There are a number of related results in ZFC concerning $\cal{P}(\kappa)$ in V and inner models, for $\kappa$ a Jónsson or singular cardinal.

    Bounded Martin's Maximum, Weak [image] Cardinals, and [image].David Asperó & Philip D. Welch - 2002 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 67 (3):1141 - 1152.
We prove that a form of the $Erd\H{o}s$ property (consistent with $V = L\lbrack H_{\omega_2}\rbrack$ and strictly weaker than the Weak Chang's Conjecture at ω1), together with Bounded Martin's Maximum implies that Woodin's principle $\psi_{AC}$ holds, and therefore 2ℵ0 = ℵ2. We also prove that $\psi_{AC}$ implies that every function $f: \omega_1 \rightarrow \omega_1$ is bounded by some canonical function on a club and use this to produce a model of the Bounded Semiproper Forcing Axiom in which Bounded Martin's Maximum (...)

    Truer.D. Goldstick & B. O'Neill - 1988 - Philosophy of Science 55 (4):583-597.
When can one say that a new theory is truer than the old one it contradicts, even though neither is absolutely true? We are primarily concerned with the case in which the conflicting theories offer answers to the same questions, and so we do not introduce considerations of "logical width". We propose that part of the new theory is truer than part of the old one when the former part gets right whatever the latter-part got right while the former does (...)

Bioethics: 50 Puzzles, Problems, and Thought Experiments.Sean D. Aas, Collin O'Neil & Chiara Lepora - 2024 - New York: Routledge.
Bioethics: 50 Puzzles, Problems, and Thought Experiments collects 50 cases—both real and imaginary—that have been, or should be, of special interest and importance to philosophical bioethics. Cases are collected together under topical headings in a natural order for an introductory course in bioethics. Each case is described in a few pages, which includes bioethical context, a concise narrative of the case itself, and a discussion of its importance, both for broader philosophical issues and for practical problems in clinical ethics and (...)

Richard Price and Edmund Burke: The Duty to Participate in Government.D. O. Thomas - 1959 - Philosophy 34 (131):308-322.
Richard Price argued for democratic institutions on the ground that each individual has a moral responsibility for the good government of his community. This assumption that political responsibilities are moral responsibilities was in turn derived from the belief that each individual has a continuous duty to create in his own personality and in his relations with his fellow men the conditions of the virtuous life. Popular political responsibility was thus defended by the extension of a rigorous moral athleticism into the (...)
