Ethical Practices and Legal Challenges in Mental Health Research.Smita N. Deshpande, Vishwajit L. Nimgaonkar, Triptish Bhatia, Nagendra Narayan Mishra, Rajesh Nagpal & Lisa S. Parker - 2020 - Asian Bioethics Review 12 (2):87-102.
Considerations of justice and concern for well-being support conducting mental health research and addressing ethical concerns specific to mental health research are critical. We discuss these concerns, provide recommendations to enable the ethical conduct of mental health research, and argue that participants’ interests should be given primary weight in resolving apparent dilemmas. We also comment on provisions of two legislative actions in India relevant to mental health research: Rights of Persons with Disability Act 2016 and the Mental Health Care Act (...)

Positive and Negative Corporate Social Responsibility, Financial Leverage, and Idiosyncratic Risk.Saurabh Mishra & Sachin B. Modi - 2013 - Journal of Business Ethics 117 (2):431-448.
Existing research on the financial implications of corporate social responsibility (CSR) for firms has predominantly focused on positive aspects of CSR, overlooking that firms also undertake actions and initiatives that qualify as negative CSR. Moreover, studies in this area have not investigated how both positive and negative CSR affect the financial risk of firms. As such, in this research, the authors provide a framework linking both positive and negative CSR to idiosyncratic risk of firms. While investigating these relationships, the authors (...)

This study examines whether corporate social responsibility (CSR) towards primary stakeholders influences the financial and the non-financial performance (NFP) of Indian firms. Perceptual data on CSR and NFP were collected from 150 senior-level Indian managers including CEOs through questionnaire survey.Hard data on financial performance (FP) of the companies were obtained from secondary sources. A questionnaire for assessing CSR was developed with respect to six stakeholder groups - employees, customers, investors, community, natural environment, and suppliers. A composite measure of CSR was (...)

    Post-Innovation CSR Performance and Firm Value.Dev Mishra - 2017 - Journal of Business Ethics 140 (2):285-306.
Analyzing a sample of 13,917 US firm–years from 1991 to 2006, we find that more innovative firms demonstrate high corporate social responsibility performance subsequent to a successful innovation. These high-CSR innovative firms enjoy significantly higher valuation post-innovation. These findings imply that firms with demonstrated potential growth opportunities, as evident from the number of registered patents and their citations, benefit by strategically investing more in CSR activities; that is, CSR investment entails ‘doing well by [strategically] doing good.’.

In a Dimension of Height: Ethics in the Education of Others.Aparna Mishra Tarc - 2006 - Educational Theory 56 (3):287-304.
Ethics penetrates every aspect of Western education. Many of its dominant narratives — education as salvation, as progress, as panacea, and as liberation, for example — are infused with the ethical. Educators are compelled by ethical callings; in fact, education as the call of the ethical informs the singular and collective identities of educators. In this essay, Aparna Mishra Tarc troubles the role of the ethics in Western education using Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak’s deconstruction of the ethical in philosophy. Spivak’s (...)

Corporate Social Responsibility: Linking Bottom of the Pyramid to Market Development?Ramendra Singh, Madhupa Bakshi & Prashant Mishra - 2015 - Journal of Business Ethics 131 (2):361-373.
In this article, we develop theoretical and empirical linkages between corporate social responsibility initiatives of business organizations and their market development efforts at the bottom of the pyramid. We use qualitative in-depth interviews of 21 CSR heads of business organizations and its CSR partner organizations in India to explore, develop, and explain plausible theoretical linkages between CSR initiatives of the organizations and its market development efforts at BOP using theory of market separations. Using theoretical frameworks from CSR literature and sub-theory (...)

Education as Humanism of the Other.Aparna Mishra Tarc - 2005 - Educational Philosophy and Theory 37 (6):833–849.
This paper explores how educators might intervene in canonized texts of the human subject on which a particular and exclusive kind of humanism rests. In imagining possible interventions educators might make, I turn to and trace Jacques Derrida's on‐going deconstruction of the philosophical texts of subjectivity. In his body of work, Derrida destabilizes fixed notions of the human subject and the institutions it founds . From Derrida's points of destabilization and through a differing but similar deconstructive stance, I also consider (...)

Radial-Basis-Function-Based Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Heavy Oil Viscosity Prediction Model for a Kuwait Viscous Oil Field.Khalid Ahmad, Faisal Hassan, Prasanta Kumar Mishra, Waleed Al-Khamees, Wei Shao, Songhua Chen, Magdalena Sandor & Yuesheng Cheng - 2016 - Interpretation: SEG 4 (2):SF81-SF92.
Characterizing heavy oil viscosity by nuclear magnetic resonance relaxation time measurements is much more challenging than characterizing light oil viscosities. Crude oils contain a wide range of hydrocarbons, resulting in broad [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] distributions that vary with the oil composition. Most often, a single geometric mean value [Formula: see text] or [Formula: see text] is correlated with the crude oil viscosity, which cannot accurately account for the inherent complexity of the oil constituent information. Furthermore, as (...)

Searchlight on Values is a profound work on a profound subject. As William H. Werkmeister writes in his introduction, “Dr. Cadwallader has given us a sensitive, well balanced, and evaluative account of Nicolai Hartmann’s Value Platonism” ; “Her book, therefore, serves well not only as a judicious evaluation of Hartmann’s Ethics but also as a critical introduction to his value theory as a whole. Seen in this perspective Dr. Cadwallader’s book is a significant contribution to value theoretical discussions in general”.

Salman Rushdie, Aesthetics and Bollywood Popular Culture.Vijay Mishra - 2012 - Thesis Eleven 113 (1):112-128.
This essay deals with the manner in which Salman Rushdie’s works engage with the heterogeneous logics of ethics and aesthetics. Drawing upon the work of Jacques Rancière it is argued that Rushdie neutralizes the two by introducing what Rancière calls a dissensus in the ethical-aesthetic hierarchy. The dissensus works on a principle of ‘excess’ so that within the domain of aesthetics the ethical is pushed to its limits. The order of desire (aesthetics) and the order of knowledge (ethics) are no (...)

Can Curative or Life-Sustaining Treatment Be Withheld or Withdrawn? The Opinions and Views of Indian Palliative-Care Nurses and Physicians.Joris Gielen, Sushma Bhatnagar, Seema Mishra, Arvind K. Chaturvedi, Harmala Gupta, Ambika Rajvanshi, Stef Van den Branden & Bert Broeckaert - 2011 - Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy 14 (1):5-18.
Introduction: Decisions to withdraw or withhold curative or life-sustaining treatment can have a huge impact on the symptoms which the palliative-care team has to control. Palliative-care patients and their relatives may also turn to palliative-care physicians and nurses for advice regarding these treatments. We wanted to assess Indian palliative-care nurses and physicians’ attitudes towards withholding and withdrawal of curative or life-sustaining treatment. Method: From May to September 2008, we interviewed 14 physicians and 13 nurses working in different palliative-care programmes in (...)

  39. Rousseau on Amour-Propre: N.J.H. Dent.N. J. H. Dent - 1998 - Aristotelian Society Supplementary Volume 72 (1):57–74.
According to familiar accounts, Rousseau held that humans are actuated by two distinct kinds of self love: amour de soi, a benign concern for one's self-preservation and well-being; and amour-propre, a malign concern to stand above other people, delighting in their despite. I argue that although amour-propre can (and often does) assume this malign form, this is not intrinsic to its character. The first and best rank among men that amour-propre directs us to claim for ourselves is that of occupying (...)

Assuming Corporate Responsibilities in Lawless Situations: Case Study of a News Media Organization.Sushanta Mishra & Kunal Kumar - 2016 - Asian Journal of Business Ethics 5 (1 - 2):81-95.
Corporate responsibility is considered the “epitome of corporate ethics.” In “the balanced concept of the firm,” a corporation is seen as a moral agent that has a balanced approach to managing three interrelated and equally important responsibilities viz. economic, social, and environmental. The case study aims to advance our understating of the “triple bottom line approach to CSR” by showing how a news media organization committed itself to dispensing its corporate responsibilities despite facing lawless situations. Through a detailed study of (...)

A Discussion on Controversies and Ethical Dilemmas in Prostate Cancer Screening.Satish Chandra Mishra - forthcoming - Journal of Medical Ethics:medethics-2019-105979.
Prostate cancer is one of the the most common cancers in men. A blood test called prostate-specific antigen has a potential to pick up this cancer very early and is used for screening of this disease. However, screening for prostate cancer is a matter of debate. Level 1 evidence from randomised controlled trials suggests a reduction in cancer-specific mortality from PCa screening. However, there could be an associated impact on quality of life due to a high proportion of overdiagnosis and (...)
