Filling certain cuts in discrete weakly o-minimal structures.Stefano Leonesi & Carlo Toffalori - 2005 - Mathematical Logic Quarterly 51 (2):145.
Discrete weakly o-minimal structures, although not so stimulating as their dense counterparts, do exhibit a certain wealth of examples and pathologies. For instance they lack prime models and monotonicity for definable functions, and are not preserved by elementary equivalence. First we exhibit these features. Then we consider a countable theory of weakly o-minimal structures with infinite definable discrete subsets and we study the Boolean algebra of definable sets of its countable models.

On the Boolean algebras of definable sets in weakly o‐minimal theories.Stefano Leonesi & Carlo Toffalori - 2004 - Mathematical Logic Quarterly 50 (3):241-248.
We consider the sets definable in the countable models of a weakly o-minimal theory T of totally ordered structures. We investigate under which conditions their Boolean algebras are isomorphic , in other words when each of these definable sets admits, if infinite, an infinite coinfinite definable subset. We show that this is true if and only if T has no infinite definable discrete subset. We examine the same problem among arbitrary theories of mere linear orders. Finally we prove that, within (...)

Weakly minimal modules over integral group rings and over related classes of rings.Stefano Leonesi, Sonia L'Innocente & Carlo Toffalori - 2005 - Mathematical Logic Quarterly 51 (6):613-625.
A module is weakly minimal if and only if every pp-definable subgroup is either finite or of finite index. We study weakly minimal modules over several classes of rings, including valuation domains, Prüfer domains and integral group rings.

The aim of the paper is to shed light on some of the most original elements of Fichte’s conception of morality as expressed in his account of specific obligations. After some remarks on Fichte’s original classification of ethical duties, the paper focuses on the prohibition of lying, the duty to communicate our true knowledge, and the duty to set a good example. Fichte’s account of those duties not only goes beyond the mere justification of universally acknowledged demands, but also deploys (...)

  5. Wolff, the Pursuit of Perfection and What We Owe to Each Other: The Case of Veracity and Lying.Stefano Bacin - 2024 - In Sonja Schierbaum, Michael Walschots & John Walsh (eds.), Christian Wolff's German Ethics: New Essays. Oxford: Oxford University Press. pp. 237-252.
My chapter deals with an important part of how Wolff pursued the normative ambitions of his ethics in giving practical guidance with regard to specific moral issues. I first consider how Wolff’s ethics tackles the duties to others, which traditionally represent a difficult issue for moral perfectionism. In this regard, I argue that Wolff’s strategy combines two aspects: (a) he includes in perfection non-active aspects and (b) operates with an agent-neutral notion of perfection, in spite of important passages that might (...)

  6. Talk about fiction.Stefano Predelli - 1997 - Erkenntnis 46 (1):69-77.
I present a novel explanation of the apparent truth of certain remarks about fiction, such as an utterance of ''Salieri commissioned the Requiem'' during a discussion of the movie Amadeus. I criticize the traditional view, which alleges that the uttered sentence abbreviates the longer sentence ''it is true in the movie Amadeus that Salieri commissioned the Requiem''. I propose a solution which appeals to some independently motivated results concerning the contexts relevant for the semantic evaluation of indexical expressions.

Transparency in postwar France: a critical history of the present.Stefanos Geroulanos - 2017 - Stanford, California: Stanford University Press.
This book argues against the widely celebrated utopia of -transparency- by showing, across a panorama of postwar French thought, how attempts to show the perils of transparency in politics, ethics, and knowledge led to major conceptual inventions, many of which we now take for granted.

Überschüsse der Erfahrung: Grenzdimensionen des Ich nach Husserl.Stefano Micali - 2008 - Dordrecht: Springer.

    Bounded iteration and unary functions.Stefano Mazzanti - 2005 - Mathematical Logic Quarterly 51 (1):89-94.
The set of unary functions of complexity classes defined by using bounded primitive recursion is inductively characterized by means of bounded iteration. Elementary unary functions, linear space computable unary functions and polynomial space computable unary functions are then inductively characterized using only composition and bounded iteration.

Virtual Existentialism: Meaning and Subjectivity in Virtual Worlds.Stefano Gualeni & Daniel Vella - 2020 - Basingstoke, UK: Palgrave Pivot.
This book explores what it means to exist in virtual worlds. Chiefly drawing on the philosophical traditions of existentialism, it articulates the idea that — by means of our technical equipment and coordinated practices — human beings disclose contexts or worlds in which they can perceive, feel, act, and think. More specifically, this book discusses how virtual worlds allow human beings to take new perspectives on their values and beliefs, and explore previously unexperienced ways of being. Virtual Existentialism will be (...)

A concurrent language for modelling agents arguing on a shared argumentation space.Stefano Bistarelli & Carlo Taticchi - 2024 - Argument and Computation 15 (1):21-48.
While agent-based modelling languages naturally implement concurrency, the currently available languages for argumentation do not allow to explicitly model this type of interaction. In this paper we introduce a concurrent language for handling agents arguing and communicating using a shared argumentation space. We also show how to perform high-level operations like persuasion and negotiation through basic belief revision constructs, and present a working implementation of the language and the associated web interface.

Iterative Characterizations of Computable Unary Functions: A General Method.Stefano Mazzanti - 1997 - Mathematical Logic Quarterly 43 (1):29-38.
Iterative characterizations of computable unary functions are useful patterns for the definition of programming languages based on iterative constructs. The features of such a characterization depend on the pairing producing it: this paper offers an infinite class of pairings involving very nice features.

New substitution bases for complexity classes.Stefano Mazzanti - 2020 - Mathematical Logic Quarterly 66 (1):37-50.
The set, the closure of F, is the closure with respect to substitution and concatenation recursion on notation of a set of basic functions comprehending the set F. By improving earlier work, we show that is the substitution closure of a simple function set and characterize well‐known function complexity classes as the substitution closure of finite sets of simple functions.

Plain Bases for Classes of Primitive Recursive Functions.Stefano Mazzanti - 2002 - Mathematical Logic Quarterly 48 (1):93-104.
A basis for a set C of functions on natural numbers is a set F of functions such that C is the closure with respect to substitution of the projection functions and the functions in F. This paper introduces three new bases, comprehending only common functions, for the Grzegorczyk classes ℰ_n with n ≥ 3. Such results are then applied in order to show that ℰ_{n+1} = K_n for n ≥ 2, where {K_n}n∈ℕ is the Axt hierarchy.
