In the research on the Early Modern Period distributed among various disciplines – history, religion, philosophy, law, literature –, there is no doubt that Samuel Pufendorf (1632–1694) was one of the outstanding representatives of modern, secular natural law, whose work had an impact over a century that can hardly be overestimated. When did the research development associated with Pufendorf’s name begin? The article examines this question from the perspective of history of science using the example of the jurisprudence dissertation of (...) Für die Ästhetik des 18. Jahrhunderts bezeichnet G.E. Lessings Laokoon: oder über die Grenzen der Mahlerey und Poesie (1766) einen markanten Höhe- und Wendepunkt. In Dichtung und Wahrheit äußert sich Goethe rückblickend: "Man muß Jüngling sein, um sich zu vergegenwärtigen, welche Wirkung Lessings Laokoon auf uns ausübte, indem dieses Werk uns aus der Region eines kümmerlichen Anschauens in die freien Gefilde des Gedankens hinriß. Das so lange mißverstandene ut pictura poesis war auf einmal beseitigt, der Unterschied der bildenden und Redekünste (...) klar, die Gipfel beider erschienen nun getrennt, wie nah ihre Basen auch zusammenstoßen mochten." Der Band verfolgt das Anliegen, im interdisziplinären Dialog die produktive Offenheit dieser 'unordentlichen Collectanea' (Laokoon, Vorrede) als konstitutives Element der Lessing'schen Ästhetik neu herauszuarbeiten. Lessing will keine systematische Ästhetik vorlegen, sondern 'fermenta cognitionis', die in ihrer Summe jedoch nichts weniger als ein umfassendes Panorama der ästhetischen, kunst- und kulturhistorischen Problemlagen der Zeit bieten. With reference to previously unpublished archival material and more recent literature, it refutes a number of widespread clichés about "neo-positivism" or "logical positivism". The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State (1884), was a provocative and profoundly influential critique of the Victorian nuclear family. Engels argued that the traditional monogamous household was in fact a recent construct, closely bound up with capitalist societies. Under this patriarchal system, women were servants and, effectively, prostitutes. Only Communism would herald the dawn of communal living and a new sexual freedom and, in turn, the role of the state would become superfluous.

We distinguish between the paradigm of game theory in which individuals act directly and that of social choice in which an impartial observer acts on the basis of social preferences, which in turn are derived from individual preferences. Much of the critique of Sen brought forward by Buchanan and de Jasay and Kliemt rests on a confusion of these two paradigms.

There is an ever increasing shortage of human organ transplants in Germany. This paper aims at understanding the reasons for that shortage better and then discusses various ways to overcome it. After estimating the potential supply of donor organs it is discussed why actual supply remains far below potential supply. Insufficient reimbursement for hospitals, a lack of incentives to donate, and mistaken donation rules are diagnosed to cause the shortage. Thus, organ shortage is due not to natural constraints but to (...) inappropriate social institutions. Introducing a presumed consent rule, reciprocity in organ allocation, better payments for hospitals and for donors seem potential remedies. (shrink)

Die Vorreden könnten das Notwendige im Gange einer solchen Entwicklung deutlich machen.« Mit der 1990 unter dem Titel ›Friedrich Nietzsche: Ecce auctor‹ vorgelegten Edition der Vorreden von 1886 hatte Claus-Artur Scheier zum ersten Mal darauf aufmerksam gemacht, daß Nietzsche die für die Neue Ausgabe seiner im eigentlichen Sinne »philosophischen« Schriften verfaßten Vorreden als in sich geschlossenen, genealogisch angelegten Versuch einer selbstkritischen Neubewertung und Einordnung seines Werkes ansah: »Von der Vorrede zur Geburt der Tragödie bis zur Vorrede des letztgenannten Buchs [der ›Genealogie der Moral‹] – das gibt eine Art ›Entwicklungsgeschichte‹« . Jetzt sah sich Nietzsche im Zenit seiner Schaffenskraft, und die Neue Ausgabe sollte den Mitte 1885 gefaßten Plan vorantreiben, »eine große Schul-Tätigkeit als Philosoph auszuüben […]. In seinem populären Hauptwerk "Also sprach Zarathustra" entwickelte Nietzsche seine später von den Nationalsozialisten missbrauchte Theorie vom Übermenschen, proklamierte, dass Gott tot sei, und beklagte die "ewige Wiederkehr des Gleichen." A work of Nietzsche's later years, The Antichrist was written after Thus Spoke Zarathustra and shortly before the mental collapse that incapacitated him for the rest of his life. The work is both an unrestrained attack on Christianity and a further exposition of Nietzsche's will-to-power philosophy so dramatically presented in Zarathustra. Christianity, says Nietzsche, represents "everything weak, low, and botched; it has made an ideal out of antagonism towards all the self-preservative instincts of strong life."
