Chester Barnard and the Systems Approach to Nurturing Organizations.Andrea Gabor & Joseph T. Mahoney - 2013 - In Morgen Witzel & Malcolm Warner (eds.), The Oxford Handbook of Management Theorists. Oxford University Press. pp. 134.
This article describes Chester Barnard, the author of The Functions of the Executive, one of the twentieth century’s most influential books on management and leadership. The book emphasizes competence, moral integrity, rational stewardship, professionalism, and a systems approach, and was written for posterity. Barnard emphasized the role of the manager as both a professional and as a steward of the corporation. His teachings drew on personal insights as a senior executive of AT&T, which saw good governance as the primary means (...)

Transcriptional Regulation of Beta-Secretase by P25/Cdk5 Leads to Enhanced Amyloidogenic Processing.Y. Wen, W. H. Yu, B. Maloney, J. Bailey, J. Ma, I. Marie, T. Maurin, L. Wang, H. Figueroa, M. Cyclin-dependent kinase 5 has been implicated in Alzheimer's disease pathogenesis. Here, we demonstrate that overexpression of p25, an activator of cdk5, led to increased levels of BACE1 mRNA and protein in vitro and in vivo. A p25/cdk5 responsive region containing multiple sites for signal transducer and activator of transcription was identified in the BACE1 promoter. STAT3 interacts with the BACE1 promoter, and p25-overexpressing mice had elevated levels of pSTAT3 and BACE1, whereas cdk5-deficient mice had reduced levels. Furthermore, mice with a (...)

Exploring the Complexity of Students’ Scientific Explanations and Associated Nature of Science Views Within a Place-Based Socioscientific Issue Context.Benjamin C. Herman, David C. Owens, Robert T. Oertli, Laura A. Zangori & Mark H. Newton - 2019 - Science & Education 28 (3-5):329-366.
In addition to considering sociocultural, political, economic, and ethical factors, effectively engaging socioscientific issues requires that students understand and apply scientific explanations and the nature of science. Promoting such understandings can be achieved through immersing students in authentic real-world contexts where the SSI impacts occur and teaching those students about how scientists comprehend, research, and debate those SSI. This triangulated mixed-methods investigation explored how 60 secondary students’ trophic cascade explanations changed through their experiencing place-based SSI instruction focused on the Yellowstone (...)

    From Dewey's Reflex Arc Concept to Transactionalism and Beyond.N. H. Pronko & D. T. Herman - 1982 - Behaviorism 10 (2):229-254.
Dewey's 1896 paper, "The Reflex Arc Concept in Psychology," was acclaimed 50 years later as the most important paper published in The Psychological Review in its first half-century of history. Today, Dewey's paper appears to be headed toward oblivion. Considering it worthy of resurrection, we use it as a starting point for tracing out the gradual evolution of Dewey and Bentley's formulation of their transactional viewpoint to its culmination in their book, Knowing and the Known. An exposition of the transactional (...)

  41. Philosophy Without Intuitions. By Herman Cappelen.Kristoffer Ahlstrom‐Vij - 2013 - Philosophical Quarterly 63 (253):821-823.
© 2013 The Editors of The Philosophical QuarterlyExperimental results on the variability and intra‐personal instability of philosophical intuitions have recently sparked a lively methodological debate about the reliability of the philosophical method. In his new book, Herman Cappelen argues that this entire debate is misguided. The reason is simple: philosophers don't rely on intuitions, so there is no reason for philosophers to worry about their reliability. Cappelen's case for this claim amounts to one of the most original and well‐argued (...)

Common Causes Love to Hide: Gábor Hofer-Szabó, Miklós Rédei and László E. Szabó: The Principle of the Common Cause. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2013, Vii+202pp, $99.00 HB. [REVIEW]Chrysovalantis Stergiou - 2015 - Metascience 24 (2):247-251.
Anything other than paraphrasing the well-known Heraclitean aphorism would not be more appropriate to portray the crux of the contribution of the three philosophers of the Budapest School, Gábor Hofer-Szabó, Miklós Rédei and Lázló E. Szabó, in the ongoing discussion of the principle of the common cause . Indeed, ‘common causes love to hide’ and for that reason critics and aspirant falsifiers of PCC find correlations which, at a first level of analysis, might lack a common cause explanation. But as (...)

  43. Why Philosophers Shouldn’T Do Semantics.Herman Cappelen - 2017 - Review of Philosophy and Psychology 8 (4):743-762.
The linguistic turn provided philosophers with a range of reasons for engaging in careful investigation into the nature and structure of language. However, the linguistic turn is dead. The arguments for it have been abandoned. This raises the question: why should philosophers take an interest in the minutiae of natural language semantics? I’ll argue that there isn’t much of a reason - philosophy of language has lost its way. Then I provide a suggestion for how it can find its way (...)

The λμT-Calculus.Herman Geuvers, Robbert Krebbers & James McKinna - 2013 - Annals of Pure and Applied Logic 164 (6):676-701.
Calculi with control operators have been studied as extensions of simple type theory. Real programming languages contain datatypes, so to really understand control operators, one should also include these in the calculus. As a first step in that direction, we introduce λμTλμT, a combination of Parigotʼs λμ-calculus and Gödelʼs T, to extend a calculus with control operators with a datatype of natural numbers with a primitive recursor. We consider the problem of confluence on raw terms, and that of strong normalization for (...)

  45. Critical Notice of Language Turned on Itself, by Herman Cappelen and Ernie Lepore.Mark Mccullagh - 2011 - Analytic Philosophy 52 (4):349-367.
This is a lively, provocative book and many of its arguments are convincing. In this critical study I summarize the book, then discuss some of the authors’ claims, dwelling on three issues: their objections to the view of François Recanati on “pre-semantic” effects; the relation between their theory of quotation and the Tarskian “Proper Name Theory,” which they reject; and their treatment of mixed quotation, which rests on the claim that quotation expressions are “syntactic chameleons.” I argue that the objections (...)

Why "Noncommuting Common Causes" Don't Explain Anything.Dustin Lazarovici - unknown
In my commentary, I will argue that the conclusions drawn in the paper Noncommutative causality in algebraic quantum field theory by Gábor Hofer-Szaboó are incorrect. As proven by J.S. Bell, a local common causal explanation of correlations violating the Bell inequality is impossible.

    T. H. Green: The Development of English Thought From J. S. Mill to F. H. Bradley.John Herman Randall - 1966 - Journal of the History of Ideas 27 (2):217.
This is an analysis of the relation of green to nineteenth century thought. The author believes that green stands for three ideas. First, He is the major nineteenth century critic of utilitarianism. Second, He is the main critic of laissez-Faire individualism. Third, He is the major critic of empiricism. Green believed that experience is identical with thought; the real world is the intelligible world. The human mind, In knowing, Establishes relations with the eternal mind. The author concludes that green is (...)
