  2. Historical Modernism: The Constitutive Role of the Historical for the Political in Hannah Arendt.Yi Wu - 2020 - Clio: A Journal of Literature, History, and the Philosophy of History 48 (1):103-121.
In The Origins of Totalitarianism, Hannah Arendt diagnosed three symptoms for the post-revolutionary, post-Enlightenment age ending in totalitarianism: 1) the obliteration of the possibility for action, i.e. for freedom; 2) the destruction of experience; and 3) the annihilation of the meaning of death. This essay tries to draw out what such Zeitdiagnose implies. I argue that for Arendt, it is not only the genuinely political that suffers irredeemably at the political as well as the societal levels of totalitarianism, but as (...)

  3. Inny w tekście, inny w polityce – Gadamer a Derrida.Jakub Dadlez - 2017 - Hybris 39 (4):96-112.
In this article I compare Hans-Georg Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics and Jacques Derrida’s deconstruction. I try to demonstrate the similarities (focus on language and history), but moreover the differences between them. The core issue is the problem of the other, which appears in the works of both authors. Two perspectives are applied: concerning the notion of text (or tradition), and referring to the field of the political. Gadamer strives to communicate with the other (text) in the mutual understanding, although he has (...)

  4. Nietzsche sobrevolando Iberoamerica.Alejandro Sanchez Lopera - 2020 - Hallazgos 34 (17):123-155.

  6. Foucault and the Historiography of Early Hellenistic Philosophy.Charles E. Snyder - forthcoming - Critical Horizons.
In his 1981–82 lectures The Hermeneutics of the Subject, Michel Foucault claims that a significant portion of the modern historiography of ancient philosophy tends to discredit the ethical framework of epimeleia heautou (“care of the self”). The prevalence of the thematic analysis of knowledge in the historiography of ancient philosophy has an overshadowing effect on the theme of care of the self. Taking Foucault’s claim as a point of departure, the aim of this paper is twofold. First, the paper provides (...)

  8. Unamuno's Religious Fictionalism.Alberto Oya - 2020 - Gewerbestrasse: Palgrave Macmillan.
This book provides a coherent and systematic analysis of Miguel de Unamuno’s notion of religious faith and the reasoning he offers in defense of it. Unamuno developed a non-cognitivist Christian conception of religious faith, defending it as being something which we are all naturally lead to, given our (alleged) most basic and natural inclination to seek an endless existence. 10.

What ideas of morality and ethics existed under National Socialism? This annotated volume of sources presents for the first time a biographically contextualized selection of texts by academic moral philosophers who distinguished themselves particularly during the "Third Reich". The examination of their ideologues helps to better understand the connection between normative self-understanding and the crimes of National Socialism. In addition, the book enables a differentiated view of the development of moral philosophy after 1945.

Walter Benjamin, Roland Barthes, Jacques Derrida, Judith Butler, and the Artist Karin Kneffel on the Deconstruction of the Familiar as Liberation From Determination.Martina Sauer - 2020 - Art Style, Art and Culture International Magazine, Special Issue_6, On the Postmodern Age, Ed. By Martina Sauer 6 (6):101-120.
What is reality? It is postmodern or poststructuralist philosophers like Roland Barthes, who realized that it only seems that the media present reality in the form of facts, because they actually spread myths. Accordingly, Jacques Derrida made it clear that communication via media is not based on logic, but is characterized by a significant “différance” between a “marque” (trace) of the past and the expectations of the future. This paper traces the development of the idea of God that appears in the ‘actualist tradition’, represented by the works of Giovanni Gentile, as well as his predecessor Bertrando Spaventa and his students Guido De Ruggiero and Ugo Spirito. It is shown that the actualists’ idea of God is rooted in an intellectual genealogy extending back to the Scholastics and developed through successive attempts to make sense of a Christian God in a scheme of pure immanence, culminating in a humanistic (...)

  23. Introduction to the Neoclassical Interpretation: Quantum Steampunk.Shiva Meucci - forthcoming - Cosmos and History: The Journal of Natural and Social Philosophy.
In a previous paper we outlined a series of historical touchpoints between classical aether theories and modern theoretical physics which showed a shared conceptual lineage for the modern tools and methods of the most common interpretations and fluid based “Hydrodynamic” treatments of an electromagnetic medium. It was proposed that, though the weight of modern experimentation leaves an extremely narrow and convoluted window for even a reconceptualization of a medium, all of modern physics recognizes a plethora of behaviors and attributes for (...)

  24. The Varieties of Modern Enchantment.Joshua Landy - 2009 - In Joshua Landy & Michael Saler (eds.), The Re-Enchantment of the World: Secular Magic in a Rational Age. Stanford, CA, USA: pp. 1-14.
This chapter argues that there is a variety of secular and conscious strategies for re-enchantment, held together by a common aim of filling a God-shaped void. The discussion also introduces three approaches to affirm the claim and offer a more nuanced understanding of the nature of modernity. The first is to reject the notion that any lingering enchantment within Western culture must of necessity be a relic (the binary approach). The second is to reject the notion that modernity is itself (...)

  25. Magical Being: A Sartrean Account of Emotion and Value, Using the Case of Disgust.Daniel O'Shiel - 2016 - Dissertation, KU Leuven
The contemporary discourse on disgust takes place in a “nature-culture” debate where it is considered as a basic instinct that is nonetheless uniquely human. Herein, disgust is usually defined as an aversive, real emotion that always has a “core”, automatic physical element, which can then also be taken up onto a more abstract, moral plane. Disgust, thus considered, is often unavoidable on the “physical” level, but avoidable and damaging on the “symbolic” level. This project aims to critique some key presuppositions (...)

  27. The Handy Western Philosophy Answer Book: The Ancient Greek Influence on Modern Understanding.Ed D'Angelo - forthcoming - Detroit, MI, USA: Visible Ink Press.
This book provides a comprehensive study of the history of ancient Greek philosophy. Though intended for the general reader, the advanced scholar will also find fresh new insights here into ancient Greek philosophy. I bring a unique perspective to bear on the subject, based on my prior studies of speculative metaphysics, Nietzsche, consciousness, psychedelics, mysticism and the philosophy of religion, as well as my studies of music, logic, mathematics and physics. The final chapter concludes with an overview of the methods (...)

  28. Tradition and Critical Thinking. On the Value of the Past in Hans Jonas's Critique of the Modern Mind.Fabio Fossa - 2019 - Philosophical Inquiries 7 (2):35-59.
The purpose of this essay is to attempt an interpretation of Hans Jonas’s philosophical approach to tradition in terms of an exercise in critical thinking. Although several modern authors have seen in tradition a normalizing and conservative force that either constrains the powers of human reason or prevents new disruptive ideas from thriving, other philosophers have contested this accusation and concurred to sketch the general guidelines of a theory of the critical value of tradition. Commenting on both published and unpublished (...)

  29. Politics Without Romance? The Pursuit of Consent in Democracy.Arianna Bove - 2020 - History of European Ideas 46 (3):325-340.
Democratic governance is under increasing scrutiny as a result of waning trust in political institutions, and a widening gap between public aspirations and government performance. The purpose of this paper is to address what is currently diagnosed as a democratic deficit by calling into question the notion of consent, procedures advocated in its pursuit, and its relationship with democracy. To this purpose, the paper reviews seminal works that have investigated the nexus of democracy and consent over time: The Calculus of (...)

Este recorrido permitirá elucidar la relación que, según el autor, mantendría una comprensión procesualista (...)
