  1. Uma Teoria da Expressão em Fernando Gil. Seguida da tradução e edição dos cursos lecionados por Fernando Gil na Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore (2002-2004).Sofia Araújo - 2013 - Dissertation, Faculdade de Letras da Universidade Do Porto
The concept of expression has always held an important place in Fernando Gil’s thought. The author’s reflection on the idea of expression is well reflected among his writings – either in his early essays or throughout his entire work –, attaining a special focus in the lectures that he gave at Johns Hopkins University during the years of 2002, 2003 and 2004. Actually, these lectures represent the strongest testimony of the relevancy given by Fernando Gil to this concept. However, despite (...)

  2. Fernando Gil's Theory on Expression.Sofia Araújo - 2018 - In Eric Beauron & Olivier Capparos (eds.), Logiques de la forme. Hommage à Fernando Gil. Paris: Classiques Garnier. pp. 83-98.

Sofia Araújo - 2016 - In Juan Antonio Nicolás, Manuel Sánchez, Miguel Escribano, Herrera Laura, Higueras Manuel, Palomo Miguel & José María Gómez Delgado (eds.), La monadología de Leibniz a debate. Granada: Editorial Comares. pp. 105-115.

  5. Kant on the Aesthetic Ideas of Beautiful Nature.Aviv Reiter - forthcoming - British Journal of Aesthetics:ayab022.
For Kant the definitive end of art is the expression of aesthetic ideas that are sensible counterparts of rational ideas. But there is another type of aesthetic idea: ‘Beauty can in general be called the _expression_ of aesthetic ideas: only in beautiful nature the mere reflection on a given intuition, without a concept of what the object ought to be, is sufficient for arousing and communicating the idea of which that object is considered as the _expression_.’ What are these aesthetic (...)

  7. On Wittgenstein’s Notion of a Surveyable Representation: Rituals, Aesthetics, and Aspect-Perception.Nir Ben-Moshe - forthcoming - Australasian Journal of Philosophy.
I demonstrate that analogies, both explicit and implicit, between Wittgenstein’s discussions of rituals, aesthetics, and aspect-perception, have important payoffs in terms of understanding his notion of a “surveyable representation” (übersichtliche Darstellung) as it applies to phenomena that are not exclusively grammatical in nature. In particular, I argue that a surveyable representation of certain anthropological and aesthetic facts allows us to see, qua form of aspect-perception, internal relations and formal connections, so that the inner nature of a ritual or the solution (...)

  16. Art, Life and Form. On Nietzsche and the Aesthetics of Existence.Alberto Giacomelli - 2021 - Studi di Estetica 19.
The paper aims to investigate the peculiar relationship between art and life in the context of Nietzsche’s thought. We mean to show how Nietzschean aesthetics is not conceived as a theoretical and rational reflection that abstractly investigates the conditions of possibility of beauty and art: on the contrary, aesthetics is understood by Nietzsche as a practice aimed at shaping life in a beautiful form. The topic of the Lebens-form is considered as a common thread of an original exegesis of human (...)

  17. From Mistaking Fakeness to Mistake in Fakeness. Artificial Ruins Between Aesthetics and Deception.Zoltán Somhegyi - 2021 - Studi di Estetica 19.
Aesthetic attraction and artful execution of the object, careful design and seemingly blatant falsification by the creator, voluntarily accepted counterfeit imitation and celebration of a melancholy-filled illusion – these, and many other, often contradictory, particularities can describe one of the most complex aesthetic phenomena, that of fake ruins. Questions of perfection and mistake, accurate planning and permissive randomness, genuineness and authenticity – or the convincing justification of aesthetic experience despite the complete lack of them – profound references to the nature (...)

  18. The Role of Roger Scruton in the Development of Analytic Aesthetics.Mohadeseh Marjani & Asghar Fahimifar - 2021 - Philosophical Investigations 15 (35):317-339.
The main purpose of this research is to explore the thoughts of British philosopher Roger Scruton in the scope of aesthetics. Scruton was particularly influenced by Kant's project of critique of rational faculties, and Wittgenstein's insights into the realm of language and meaning. For this purpose, the steps he has taken in the development of analytic aesthetics have been extracted. This study was conducted using first-order library resources using conceptual analysis method. According to Scruton, aesthetics is the core of philosophy (...)

  19. The Parallels between Kantian Aesthetics and the Presence of Tibetan Art in the Yuan-Ming Era.Andrei-Valentin Bacrău - forthcoming - Philosophia:1-19.
This paper will look at Kant’s views of the aesthetic experience, in relationship to Buddhist philosophical and political discussions of art and social organization. The primary focus in Kantian literature explores the relationship between free and dependent beauty, as well as Kant’s paradox of taste. The central argument of the Kantian portion is going to navigate the paradox of taste via Graham Priest’s epistemic and conceptual distinction pertaining to the limits of thought. Secondly, I shall contextualize the debate with similar (...)

Thomas Nagel provides a brief summary of Wittgenstein's thought, both early and late, for the general public. Summarizing the late Wittgenstein, Nagel writes: "The beginning, the point at which we run out of justifications for dividing up or organizing the world or experience as we do, is typically a form of life. Justification comes to an end within it, not by an appeal to it. This is as true of the language of experience as it is of the language of (...)
