  2. Exploring educational leadership and teacher ethics: who can lead and what are the key qualities?Zhaojie Wang, Laiqing Han & Lijuan Zhang - forthcoming - Ethics and Behavior.
This study delves into the perception of educational leadership and professional ethics among Chinese educators, paying particular attention to identifying key characteristics deemed important for effective leadership and examining the relationship between leadership qualities and ethical behavior. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study combines qualitative data from an open survey in which 207 teachers listed ten key leadership qualities with quantitative analysis. This study found that Chinese educators consider honesty to be the most important quality for effective leadership in education. (...)

  3. Commerce over care: exploring legal advice given in potential economic abuse cases.Eleanor Rowan - forthcoming - Legal Ethics.
This paper argues that solicitors are required to lawyer relationally when delivering independent legal advice (ILA) to (predominantly) women set to provide suretyship for their intimate partner’s debts. Case law tells us that women providing suretyship may be entering the transaction under the coercion of their partner. Coerced debt is a form of economic abuse, which in turn is a form of domestic abuse. ILA in this context therefore provides an important intervention to potentially assist victims of abuse before entering (...)

  4. Is Sex Work Inherently Gendered?Natasha McKeever - 2025 - Hypatia:1-20.
Sex work is highly gendered, with 80 percent of sex workers being female, and the vast majority of buyers of sex being male. It is often taken for granted that this is how it is, and implicit in much of the debate around sex work is the assumption that it is inherently gendered. In this paper, I question this assumption, drawing on sociological research to challenge arguments which purport that it is inconceivable that women would ever want to pay for (...)

  5. Superlongevity and African Ethics.Christopher S. Wareham - forthcoming - Journal of Applied Philosophy.
I apply African moral precepts to the topic of ‘superlongevity’. I make the case that African theories give rise to three specific sorts of moral concern about life extension that are distinct from similar objections in Western literature: first, superlongevity presents a challenge to identity; second, significantly longer lives face increased challenges to their meaningfulness; third, life extension may be socially divisive, undermining key tenets of sharing a way of life and communing harmoniously with others. Although these distinctive concerns are (...)

  6. Redefining the Nature and Purpose of Sport: Transgender Women’s Inclusion.Miroslav Imbrisevic - 2024 - Fair Play 26 (1):79-98.
This article critically examines the evolving policies surrounding the inclusion of transgender women in women’s sports categories, with a focus on the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) framework. The author highlights the implications of prioritizing inclusion over fairness, arguing that the fundamental value of fairness in sports is compromised when male-bodied athletes compete in female categories. Through a detailed analysis, the article explores the role of categorization in preserving equitable competition, the impact of physiological advantages, and the socio-cultural narratives influencing policy (...)

Global health security in the Biden-Harris Administration has been a dynamic area of engagement, starting with the COVID-19 response, to strengthening and reforming the World Health Organization, to bolstering regional partnerships, and securing financing for pandemic preparedness. Sustained commitment to bilateral, regional, and multilateral cooperation will ensure that the United States stands ready to address any future health challenges.

  10. Education as hospitality – re-thinking the ‘educational’ in education.Jan Varpanen - forthcoming - Ethics and Education.
A key question in the field of educational theory is the question of what is ‘educational’ in education. Responses to this question in the field are often connected to some type of change that is to take place in the child: children are socialised, they become subjects, or learn. I argue that this way of understanding what is educational in education is not applicable to a specific type of educational practice, which I label as co-existential practices. Co-existential practices are often (...)

According to a statistical report conducted in January 2022, TikTok is available in over 150 countries and 75 languages, and is the fastest growing social media application worldwide. As expected, such a phenomenon has given rise to a huge amount of scientific literature, spanning medical studies to sociology, psychology to communication, and computer studies to anthropology, while the peculiar engagement TikTok (...)

  12. No Right to an Open Future.Joseph Millum - forthcoming - Journal of Applied Philosophy.
Liberals writing about the family frequently cite the child's ‘right to an open future’ in discussions of the ethics of parental decision-making for young children. This purported right grounds certain claims on behalf of children in considerations related to their future autonomy. In this article, I argue that there is no compelling argument in favor of a distinctive ‘right to an open future’ construed as either a negative or a positive right. Insofar as claims made about the content of this (...)

  14. Theorising and Implementing Smart Healthy Age-Friendly Environments.Agnieszka Cieśla, Delali A. Dovie, Jorge Felix, Andrzej Klimczuk & Vitalii Nitsenko (eds.) - 2025
This Special Collection focuses on both theoretical and practical dimensions of the smart healthy age-friendly environments (SHAFE). The SHAFE concept is more and more widely discussed and used in the fields and interventions related to population ageing and intergenerational relationships around the world. The SHAFE idea is one of the most recent iterations of the age-friendly cities and communities (AFCC) concept that was introduced by the World Health Organization in 2007. The discourse on the development of standards for adapting cities (...)

  15. The Multidimensionality of moral identity – toward a broad characterization of the moral self.Tassilo Tom Tissot, Alain Van Hiel, Dries Bostyn, Leen Haerens, Annick Willem & Bram Constandt - forthcoming - Ethics and Behavior.
The present study explored the multidimensionality of moral identity. In four studies (N = 1,159), we compiled a comprehensive list of moral traits, analyzed their factorial structure, and established relationships between the factorial dimensions and outcome variables. The resulting dimensions are Connectedness, Truthfulness, Care, and Righteousness. To examine relations to personality traits and pro- and antisocial inclinations we developed a new instrument, the Moral Identity Profile (MIP). Our results show distinctive relationships for the four dimensions, which challenge previous unidimensional conceptualizations (...)

Because of the importance of data-sharing for the economy, improved products and services, and to benefit society, the European Union has proposed developing a Common European Data Space (CEDS). The goal is to create a single European data market through 14 domain-specific data spaces (e.g., agriculture, or the Common European Agricultural Data Space (CEADS)). One of the central tenets of the CEDS is to ensure that those who share data can maintain control over who has access to, use of, and (...)

  20. What I Really, Really Want: The Role, Nature, and Value of True Preferences in the Ethics of Nudging.Bart Engelen & Viktor Ivanković - forthcoming - Journal of Applied Philosophy.
In this article, we discuss the role that ‘true preferences’ can and should play in discussions on the possibility and desirability of paternalist nudges. Critics have claimed that such preferences do not exist, cannot be known reliably by third parties, and cannot justify whether and how to nudge people. In this article, we argue that these objections undermine the extent to which philosophers and laypeople can make sense of autonomy and authenticity. We aim to identify what kinds of preferences can (...)

  21. The Power of Ahimsic Communication.Brian C. Barnett - 2024 - Current Events in Public Philosophy Series (Apa Blog).
In parts one and two of this three-part series, I developed a framework for ahimsic (nonviolent) communication (AC) as an alternative to the standard communicative norm of civility. The framework presented for AC offers various categories of resistance to violence, including nonviolent forms of negotiation, compromise, protest, verbal force, verbal distraction, argumentation, and communicative satyagraha (Gandhian nonviolence applied to communication). I also provided a range of real-life examples of successful AC resistance, including the stories of Derek Black, Daryl Davis, James (...)

  22. The validity and reliability study of the Turkish version of the Ethical Awareness Scale.Gülcan Eyüboğlu, Nevin Doğan, Arnel Böke Kiliçli, Zehra Göçmen Baykara & Aimee Milliken - forthcoming - Ethics and Behavior.
The heightened focus on patient safety and the quality of nursing care in intensive care units underscores the necessity for reliable tools to evaluate nurses’ ethical awareness. This study was aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the Ethical Awareness Scale in a sample of intensive care nurses. Data were collected from 249 intensive care nurses in Türkiye using the Turkish version of the 18-item Ethical Awareness Scale. The data were then analyzed using Rasch analysis. The (...)

  23. The Morality of Driving Cars : An Ethical Analysis of Risk Impositions.Henok Girma Abebe - unknown
This paper provides an ethical analysis of risk impositions from car driving in a low-income country context. To this end, a model of ethical risk analysis is used in which stakeholders and their corresponding roles in relation to a risk imposition is used to identify the nature and moral acceptability of risk impositions. I argue that car driving involves a risk imposition in which some stakeholders who decide on and benefit from the risk impositions impose an unfair risk of harm (...)

  24. Old Enough to Carry, Old Enough to Vote.Seana Valentine Shiffrin - forthcoming - Journal of Applied Philosophy.
Japa Pallikkathayil persuasively argues that abortion prohibitions treat impregnable people as less than equal citizens, subject to different treatment than other citizens whose bodies are protected from compulsory service for the benefit of others. Pallikkathayil's argument could be modified to avoid a tension with arguments for conscription, to stress that democratic equality is inconsistent with requisitioning a citizen's body to serve the needs of another specific citizen. Pallikkathayil also contends that ‘[t]he changes we would need to make to our other (...)

  25. Ahimsic Communication: An Alternative to Civility.Brian C. Barnett - 2024 - Current Events in Public Philosophy Series (Apa Blog).
When it comes to contentious conversations, the call for civility is commonplace. Rarely do we hear a call for nonviolence in communication. This is unfortunate, since nonviolence is a better standard than civility (a standard I critiqued in part one of this three-part series). Part of the problem is that a framework for communicative nonviolence has not (to my knowledge) been fully developed. Mohandas (“Mahatma”) Gandhi, the “father of nonviolence,” is widely known for nonviolence, but primarily in the realm of (...)

Rooted in a desire to conduct ethical research with Indigenous People rather than on them, this autoethnographic document-based case study relies on anti-colonial praxis and places the Navajo and non-Navajo perspectives of two researchers navigating the Navajo Nation Human Research Review Board’s (NNHRRB) processes for conducting human subjects research within Kirkness and Barnhardt’s (1991) “Four Rs” framework of respect, relevance, reciprocity, and responsibility. This case analyzes and presents thematic assertions drawn from entries of both authors’ reflective journals they kept while (...)

  27. Perceptions of ethical misconduct scale development.Andrea C. Mendez-Meggison, Alexander T. Jackson & Michael B. Hein - 2025 - Ethics and Behavior 35 (1):13-28.
Despite organizational ethical training programs, some employees still engage in unethical behavior. As such, organizational researchers have sought to examine why employees engage in unethical behavior and whether interventions can improve ethical misconduct. While some instruments measure moral development or ethical/unethical behaviors toward the organization, this study utilized a unique scale which evaluates perceptions of ethical misconduct (PEMS). Data from a large Midwestern university, a large Southeastern university, and Amazon’s Mechanical Turk were used in the analyses. An exploratory and confirmatory (...)

  28. Ethical governance in Chinese universities: an overview of research ethics committees.Dan Li - 2025 - Ethics and Behavior 35 (1):1-12.
This study aims to provide an overview of RECs (research ethics committees) in Chinese universities, encompassing both medical and non-medical studies. The primary objective is to identify major challenges faced by RECs in Chinese universities and draw meaningful implications from the findings. The investigation focuses on 42 comprehensive Chinese universities, and the results reveal that while all universities have implemented RECs in various forms, only 28.6% explicitly stipulate ethical review requirements for non-medical disciplines. Furthermore, RECs in Chinese universities encounter various (...)

Vaccine hesitancy persists despite vaccination’s important role in global health. As many vaccines provide social benefits through herd immunity, vaccination decisions can raise moral concerns. Two studies explored the role of moral convictions in vaccination decisions. Study 1 (N = 485) revealed higher vaccination intentions when individuals thought about vaccination in moral terms. Emotions and moral piggybacking positively predicted moral convictions. In Study 2 (N = 1,111), we evaluated the effects of emotional, moral, and scientific pro-vaccination arguments on moral convictions, (...)

This study investigates the connection between following Islamic work ethics (IWE) and workplace deviance, and explores the role of perceived organizational politics as a mediator and the impact of incivility initiated by supervisors as a second-stage moderator. Data were collected via a two-wave survey of 205 professionals in various industries. Results show that those who adhere to IWE exhibit a negative link to workplace deviance, as they have less involvement in organizational politics. The study also finds that incivility initiated by (...)

To assess the relationships between environmental agency, prosocial moral reasoning, and civic moral disengagement, 544 community-dwelling adults were administered the image-based Environmental Agency Scale (EAS), the Prosocial Moral Reasoning Objective Measure (PROM), and the Civic Moral Disengagement Scale (CMDS). The EAS Agentic Self and Agentic Other dimensions proved to be reliable measures and showed adequate factor validity. Mean/median score comparisons between EAS Agentic Self Scale and Agentic Other Scale scores indicated that participants viewed society-level actions as more relevant than individual-level (...)

  32. Self‐Deception in Human– AI Emotional Relations.Emilia Kaczmarek - forthcoming - Journal of Applied Philosophy.
Imagine a man chatting with his AI girlfriend app. He looks at his smartphone and says, ‘Finally, I'm being understood’. Is he deceiving himself? Is there anything morally wrong with it? The human tendency to anthropomorphize AI is well established, and the popularity of AI companions is growing. This article answers three questions: (1) How can being charmed by AI's simulated emotions be considered self‐deception? (2) Why might we have an obligation to avoid harmless self‐deception? (3) When is self‐deception in (...)

  33. Confucian Harmony, Civility and the Echo Chamber.Kyle van Oosterum - forthcoming - Journal of Applied Philosophy.
How should we interact with people in echo chambers? Recently, some have argued that echo-chambered individuals are not entitled to civility. Civility is the virtue whereby we communicate respect for persons to manage our profound disagreements with them. But for civil exchanges to work, people must trust one another and their testimony. Therefore, some argue, we can be moderately uncivil towards those in echo chambers who are unlikely to trust our attempts to be civil. I argue against this position. I (...)

  34. The Use of Good Character Discounts in Sentencing Financial Fraudsters.Lisa Marriott - 2024 - Criminal Justice Ethics 43 (3):285-303.
This article assesses how good character is used to discount sentences in tax and benefit fraud cases in Aotearoa New Zealand. Four factors are highlighted. The first is a focus on neoliberal priorities that privilege “good citizens” who are primarily tax fraudsters, with the provision of sentence discounts to ensure the offender can remain in employment. The second is sentence reduction, which is primarily visible in tax cases when repayment of the outstanding funds is made. While the average value of (...)

  37. Experiences, Views, and Attitudes of Participants of a Mediation Dialogue Group Implemented Within a Restorative Justice Framework in the Context of Non-related Traffic Accidents in Belgium: A Thematic Analysis.Farah Focquaert, Kato Verghote, Désirée Wagenaar, Sigrid Wallaert & Kristien Hens - 2024 - Criminal Justice Ethics 43 (3):259-284.
Our research describes the experiences, views, and attitudes of participants of mediation dialogue groups involving non-related traffic accidents regarding their participation and related topics, such as responsibility, rehabilitation, and restoration. In Belgium, the criminal law holds that victims and offenders need to be informed about the option of entering a restorative mediation process during criminal proceedings. Mediation is voluntary and provided by an independent state-funded organization. We collected the data through individual semi-structured in-depth interviews with participants of two mediation dialogue (...)

  38. Beyond Judicial Solitude: Listening in the Politics of Criminal Sentencing.Jeffrey Kennedy - 2024 - Criminal Justice Ethics 43 (3):225-258.
Criminal sentencing has grown into an increasingly interactive process featuring a multiplicity of potential actors—prosecution, defence, the individual convicted of the crime, probation officers and case workers, victims or their families, the police, community representatives, community workers, and even academics. The philosophical foundations of sentencing scholarship, however, regularly assume a model of judicial solitude in which sentencing judges are separate and apart from other actors. This article suggests the need to take sentencing’s interactivity and its politics seriously and draws on (...)

  40. Racism, Speciesism, and the Argument from Analogy: A Critique of the Discourse of Animal Liberation.Kristian Cantens - forthcoming - Journal of Applied Philosophy.
Peter Singer's argument against ‘speciesism’ has served as the theoretical foundation for the modern animal rights movement. His argument is that the wrongs we do to animals are analogous to those committed against marginalized humans; that if we are opposed to one, then we should also be opposed to the other. Despite the argument's popularity, those historically oppressed groups to whom animals are compared have been critical of it, perceiving the analogy as dehumanizing. Animal activists have struggled to understand this (...)

  42. Systemic risks and solar climate engineering research. Integrating technology ethics into the governance of systemic risks.Benjamin P. Hofbauer - 2023 - Journal of Risk Research 26 (12):1383-1395.
The paper explores how the framework of systemic risks can help govern the risks imposed through solar climate engineering research. The central argument is that a systemic perspective of risk is a useful tool for analysing and assessing the risks imposed through Stratospheric Aerosol Injection (SAI) research. SAI is a form of climate engineering that could cool the planet by enhancing its albedo through the injection of aerosols into the stratosphere. Researching such a technology creates systemic risks with a strong (...)

  43. Changing Behaviour by Adding an Option.Lukas Fuchs - forthcoming - Journal of Applied Philosophy.
Adding an option is a neglected mechanism for bringing about behavioural change. This mechanism is distinct from nudges, which are changes in the choice architecture, and instead makes it possible to pursue republican paternalism, a unique form of paternalism in which choices are changed by expanding people's set of options. I argue that this is truly a form of paternalism (albeit a relatively soft one) and illustrate some of its manifestations in public policy, specifically public options and market creation. Furthermore, (...)

  44. Democratic education in transition: introduction to special issue.Anniina Leiviskä, Ivan Zamotkin & Tuija Kasa - 2024 - Ethics and Education 19 (4):461-466.
The current ‘crisis of democracy’ has given rise to various debates concerning the nature of democratic politics and the role of education in it. The possibility of education to contribute to the creation of democratic citizens has been placed into question; especially the ‘traditional’ approaches to democratic education, deriving from liberal and deliberative theories, have been criticized for their non-correspondence with political and educational realities. Against this background, this special issue focuses on the question, how should the role of democratic (...)
