  1. Dianoia in Ioane Petritsi’s Commentary on Proclus’ Elements of Theology.Lela Alexidze - 2016 - Chôra 14:177-194.
The aim of this paper is to analyze the concept of dianoia as soul’s activity, and related issues, in the twelfth century work by Ioane Petritsi : his Georgian translation of Proclus’ Elements of Theology and his Commentary on this text, including his prologue to it. The themes related to the discursive mode of cognition are also discussed in the 129th proposition of the Georgian version of the Elements and in Petritsi’s commentary on it. While analyzing the issues related to (...)

_ Source: _Volume 55, Issue 1-3, pp 170 - 198 In this paper, the author offers an introduction to Marsilius of Inghen’s treatment of _expositiones_ of sentences _de incipit_ and _de desinit_ in his treatise on _Consequentiae_, with an analysis of the various _modi exponendi_ presented by Marsilius and an edition of the text. The author argues that, in the split between physical and logical approaches to the issues arising in analyses of _incipit_ and _desinit_, Marsilius’ theory presents some hybrid (...)

_ Source: _Volume 55, Issue 1-3, pp 60 - 84 In a seminal article, Simo Knuuttila and Anja Inkeri Lehtinen drew attention to a “curious doctrine” holding that contradictories can be true at the same temporal instant, and identified the major defenders of the doctrine as John Baconthorpe, Landolfo Caracciolo, and Hugh of Novocastro. Normann Kretzmann later asserted as fact the suggestion by Knuuttila and Inkeri Lehtinen that the doctrine comes from a misreading of a passage from Aristotle’s _Physics_. In (...)

  9. Living a Double Life.David Ellis - 2016 - Chôra 14:89-103.
This paper examines the degree to which language can express one’s own being and the being of other things. Using Plotinus’ IV 3[27], On Difficulties about the Soul I, it argues that discursive reason both hinders and assists this endeavor. Plotinus understands the soul as the source of discursivity. His account positions the human soul between Intellect and corporeality. Similarly, discursive reason operates between thought and perception, working with images from both. On the one hand, since discursivity remains immersed in (...)

_ Source: _Volume 55, Issue 1-3, pp 22 - 35 Hugh of Novocastro, Landolfo Caracciolo, John Baconthorpe, and some other medieval authors argued that there are real contradictions in nature. The background of this early fourteenth-century theory was the Aristotelian question of how to determine the instant of change between p and ~p. The argument was that these are simultaneously true at the temporal instant of change if it is an instant of changing. The author’s aim is to discuss the (...)

  13. Logismos et dianoia chez Plotin.Francis Lacroix - 2016 - Chôra 14:105-125.
The use of the terms λογισμός and διάνοια in the writings of Plotinus has already been discussed by H. J. Blumenthal in his book entitled Plotinus’ Psychology. Blumenthal here defended the thesis that the terms were used as synonyms in the Enneads. Indeed, though some passages seem to indicate a difference between λογισμός and διάνοια, in the majority of cases Plotinus nonetheless seems to use these words interchangeably. We propose to analyze in detail the terms λογισμός and διάνοια by referring, (...)

  15. La διάνοια chez Proclus.Alain Lernould - 2016 - Chôra 14:139-154.
According to the well known Platonic distinction of different types of knowing, discursive thought is second to intellect, and above opinion. Intellection intelligizes the entire intelligible cosmos, all at once, in an undivided manner. Discursive thought, involving temporal thinking, articulates into plurality the indivisible character of the intellectual life. I argue in this paper that Proclus does not reduce discursive thought to discursivity. Discursive thought is thought, i.e. intellection before being discursive, intellection of Psychic Forms, and intellection in the manner (...)

_ Source: _Volume 55, Issue 1-3, pp 227 - 236 Graham Priest has argued that changes occur at a moment of change in which objects are in a contradictory state, being in both the state changed from and the state changed to. In “Moments of Change,” the current author rejected this model on the grounds that every change would require an infinite number of other changes, and that for similar regress problems, the model is not compatible with the Leibniz Continuity (...)

_ Source: _Volume 55, Issue 1-3, pp 36 - 59 This paper examines the accounts of limit decision advanced by Hervaeus Natalis and Durand of St. Pourçain in their respective discussions of the sanctification of the Blessed Virgin. Hervaeus and Durand argue, against Aristotle, that the temporal limits of certain changes, including Mary’s sanctification, should be assigned in discrete rather than continuous time. The paper first considers Hervaeus’ discussion of limit decision and argues that, for Hervaeus, a solution of temporal (...)

For Damascius, the last great Neoplatonist of late Antiquity, the answer to the question “how to go beyond the plurality of human thought for the purpose of really attaining the one?” is not to be found on the side of the via negativa – which is the dynamics of a rejection of plurality –, but in a positive, unifying and integrative dialectic by which the plurality of the soul is not denied any more, but gathered, contracted and simplified in an (...)

  19. Souls and Cities in Late Ancient Platonic Philosophy.

_ Source: _Volume 55, Issue 1-3, pp 217 - 226 Instantaneous changes may well be thought to give rise to contradiction. If one endorses an explosive logic, where contradictions entail everything, this is entirely unacceptable. However, if one deploys a paraconsistent logic, which keeps contradictions under control, one may give perfectly coherent and precise models of such changes. In _In Contradiction_ the author showed how and he explored the philosophical implications of the model. Here, the author revisits the issue in (...)

  21. Plotinus on Starting Points of Reasoning.Pauliina Remes - 2016 - Chôra 14:29-57.
Plotinus treats certain pre‑philosophical concepts as reliable or promising starting‑points for philosophical study. This article studies the way in which he, in the act of philosophizing, conceives of the passage from an unclear understanding, a kind of pre‑concept, to a better, philosophical conception. What are the sources of this passage? What is the role of data given by sense‑perception? In what way are innate conceptual and cognitive capacities involved? It will be argued that the methodology suggested is a Platonic version (...)

The aim of this paper is to complement our knowledge of Ockham’s position on the problem of the instant of change by analysing the treatment of the problem he gives (...)

_ Source: _Volume 53, Issue 2-4, pp 249 - 268 The tract on logic that has now become known as the _Introductiones Montanae maiores_ provides us with useful evidence of the kind of education that was on offer in the Parisian schools of the 12th century. In this contribution, I will go through a number of arguments brought up in connection with the definitions of basic logical concepts. By doing so I aim to provide more details about some of the (...)
